Was Bubsy actually somewhat popular in the 90s? I mean, he got a ton of sequels, so he must have had some kind of fan base.

Like that would be the actual progression and mechanic of the game? Washed up mascots start out in their original forms then compete in minigames like producing leaked sex tapes, committing scandalous crimes, having public psychotic episodes, doing reality television, going through rehab to earn the money and notoriety to have cosmetic surgery including but not limited to sex changes with the final winner gracing the cover of Time magazine and being declared an inspiration to us all - the rest presumably dying of OD suicides.

Did you know that Yahtzee once applied as a writer for Duke Nukem Forever? The team apparently liked his writing sample but the director of the game, George Broussard, rejected his application because he thought it disrespected the character. It makes me think Yahtzee's DNF would have been a bit like that: a washed up Duke trying to reclaim respect and glory.

You owe it to yourself to emulate it. It's bad, but not bad enough to be entertaining. The weird physics, useless camera, and extremely repetitive level designs make it feel like a bad romhack of a good game.

Bubsy is a shameless cash-in on the biggest trends of the time. It's pure corporate ambition baked into a crispy lump and shipped out without any polishing. The series has a lot of ambition, a lot of ideas, and some killer marketing, but they had no idea how to actually implement all those ideas into a game.

Bubsy isn't very interesting out of context. It's just a mediocre game. In context though, with all the ads and the hype and the 90s trends that surround it, it's a really interesting game.

Don't buy it though. It's not *that* interesting.

Some folks drew Bubsy as a girl. Some people took the art super seriously, got pissed, and complained about "SJWs" ruining gaming, often with a rant about women/trans/liberals and the scourge of redesigned characters. This was a mildly funny overreaction, which lead to a flood of female Bubsy fanart, including lots of porn and lots of images where girl Bubsy pretends to be the "real" Bubsy and insults the original, claiming he's a fake. This triggered people who don't even care about politics but *do* care about Bubsy and/or being right, which make the trolling more effective, which lead to more art.

So basically it's just standard trolling. The fact that some people care this much about a dead and obscure character like Bubsy just makes it funnier.

>who are the people triggered by it.
People with a hate-boner for "SJWs," people who hate gender-flipped designs, people who take video games too seriously, people who get really angry when someone is wrong... basically 4chan.

I'm pretty sure almost everyone thinks its terrible, but I've seen the worst reactions from anti-sjw types, especially when it gets posted here. That may just be because the overlap between gamers and the anti-SJW crowd is huge. A lot of the art, especially the porn, is designed to be obnoxious and offensive to the groups mentioned in that post. It's not about being political, it's about pissing people off.

What the fuck was with old platformers and hollywood?
Why did they think hollywood was a big advertising/selling point? Hollywood themed levels/worlds, hollywood actor references, etc.. Was it a selling point?

Am I too young and just missing something or whats going on here??

It sounds to me you're projecting your opinion as the "truth"
have you seen most of the fanart of the character? Seems all too genuine to me. "It's different from what I like therefore troll!"
And have you seen the game that's actually the whole reason why modern Bubsy was made? A lot of work is going into it. And have you read any of the lore?
I find your argument extremely hard to buy, anon.

There's something about animated characters in the 90s and show business. Specifically the warner bros cartoons come to mind. Things like the Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, and Freakazoid seemeds to break the 4th wall quite a bit by referencing Hollywood business practices no child understood or odd references to stars. Even Saban's localization of Kyatto Ninden Teyandee, Samurai Pizza Cats, just seems waist deep in acting in-jokes. Why? I really don't know. I wonder if someone has a lengthy academic history on the practice. Still, if I had to guess bubsy is like this specifically as a reaction to those children's programs.

I played the first game on the Genesis for the first time in about 20 years and it was pretty fun.
One thing I like is enemies don't come back when you die so there is actually a reason to try and kill them.
Platforming is kinda difficult since you die in one hit, but you can pounce and kind glide and aim yourself.

First two areas are pretty easy, then the difficulty gets stupid hard around the train level since each of the 3 levels have a train and canyon part.
I could not get past the first level of the Beaver Dam though, and I got there with like 11 lives. It's insanely difficult compared to the previous levels.

Man, I bought the strategy guide for Bubsy when I was like 4-5 and read through it countless times. I think I finally played the game when I was 13 and I was not prepared for how annoyingly difficult that game got in the river stage. Like bubsy 3d, I can't imagine anyone feeling any satisfaction for actually beating the game,

I'm going by what the creator of "new" Bubsy has actually said about their intentions, but ok. If you want to believe it's not designed to be confrontational or obnoxious, you have fun.
The game does look fun though, and it's clear that the creator cares about their work, no matter how confrontational it is. Something can be intentionally confrontational or troll-ish without being "just" a joke. Ever read political cartoons? Listen to metal or emo? Read 4chan posts? Art can be multiple things at once.

for third-party games (other than RPGs) until the 32-bit era. The more you know...

Pop culture references have always been a big thing, especially in comedy. A lot of mascot platformers had a comedic slant. This is especially true for the ones that were designed to be "edgy" and "cool," because they'd often crack sarcastic jokes or break the third wall to be funny. It's the same principle as Deadpool but not quite as good.

I too am going by what they have said. Nowhere have I seen them say "uhhh I made this because I wanted to piss people off" it's more like "I made this because I wanted to and because people like it but also lol at the people getting mad"

Find me the post where they say modern Bubsy was made "for teh lulz XD" and I'll believe you. Until then you're just projecting.

I'm not trying to say that. My bad for being unclear. I don't think modern Bubsy was made for lulz. The creator definitely created modern Bubsy (and continues to work on the concept) because he thought it was a good idea. But the butthurt and lulz is why it became a meme with lots of shitposts and fanart instead of just being another weird fangame.
I think we're more or less on the same page actually, even if we disagree on how important lulz are to the core concept.

>because of the butthurt and lulz
Or because furries are weird and like that shit? Have you noticed that most people who have drawn fanart of Bubsy are just weird furries? None of it is even targeted at anything or anyone, they're just like "I like this." It seems more like sqrly taking advantage of furries and making people feel sorry for the character.

If it was all about teh lulz xd then there'd be waaaay more art depicting Gex getting cucked by Conker, which was pretty much the only thing that was all about offending someone. That and Bubsy's dick being cartoonishly huge. Both were targeted at SJWs, which is more of a Tumblr problem, and most of the attention it gets is from furry tumblr users. They tend to be into weird shit like this when they're not uptight SJWs who are offended by penises (and everyone knows penis is a furry's best friend anyway)

When normies start memeing Modern Bubsy the way they do with Classic Bubsy, then we'll talk.

The magazines of the day got some advertising bucks and all the screenshots and coverage did get me to rent the first game from Blockbuster. However, I don't remember getting far in the game. I think everyone wanted the series to be good because cats are cute.

I cannot afford those games now due to their cult status. Got the US GBA 2 as well, but the first one eludes me from both US and Japanese versions. The US version of the original Playstation is well out of my pay grade and I cannot get the Wonderswan one either for cheap. Also, please forgive my old pic, I did not realize the volleyball game was released in Europe, I suppose they like the series there too more than here in the USA. I like the series too, but I only got on board once 2 came out.
