Any retro horror games that are like this one in quality?

>> No.4010851

Quality is a pretty objective criteria. There aren't really any other 8 bit horror RPGs like that but there are a literal shit ton of "retro style" (non-vr) ones made on RPG Maker.

lol shit I meant "subjective". I was posting quickly from my phone. I mean, we could objectively list QUALITIES that Sweet Home has and then objectively try to come up with other retro games that share those qualities. I really don't think there are any although >>4010880 is probably closest. OP also might enjoy some of the early computer horror point and click or horror themed CRPGs but the games that are the MOST similar to Sweet Home are the more modern horror RPGs made on RPG Maker like Yume Nikki and .flow. Oh! The original Corpse Party is retro. It came out on PC-98 there's probably a lot more on there too if you dig (and translate)

It's really just AitD for all intents and purposes. But it's classier to claim you were inspired by an obscure game your own company made and throw in a couple of visual references.

It's a better and less obvious implementation of the Zeldavania gambit 2bh

There'd be a pretty big asterisk next to that No. The guy sets off to make a remake, but doesn't in any tangible way beyond a very vague claim to the "mood", instead cloning almost every gameplay feature of a second game -including controls, environment and view setup, and style of puzzles.

And it's not as if he tried to hide it or anything, but he does downplay it; he acknowledges he adopted the fixed camera setup from AitD, but usually the fact that the control setup is identical and the flow of the game is basically the same with overplayed combat over puzzles is brushed over.

I disagree.
It's very rough, but the only real problems with the combat system come from not knowing how it works.

I played Koudelka a few years ago after beating Shadow Hearts 1 and 2 and wanting more of the world.

The beginning is easy enough, but the game doesn't properly explain stats or weapon durability. Once you lean how to combat system works though, it becomes a lot more enjoyable. There's a steep difficulty curve about 4-5 hours into the game, and if you fucked up your early leveling and wasted powerful weapons on chaff, you'll have a bad time.

It's so short though like way short like a survival horror game. You know, contained - which is a key element of horror from a literary sense but when it also gets stormed through it doesn't really give the RPG mechanics a chance to develop the way they should unless the advancement, xp and challenge ramps are all painstakingly balanced and in Koudelka they aren't.

Hey that gets me to thinking - are SMT games horror RPGs? They even give a sort of character switching.

>> No.4016484

>>4016460
Koudelka IS balanced, but not in the way you want it to be.

It eases you in with a low difficulty intro, then ramps up the difficulty to let you know that it's done being nice.

Also, Koudelka is about 15 hours for a casual first play. 18-20 hours if you take your time and do all the optional stuff.

It's not that short.

in short, make Koudelka a damage dealing magic user, have Edward punch enemies to death (you will be swimming in weapons), and have James play support/magic with a firearm.

Agi makes battles faster.
Vit makes you tougher.
Str/Dex are for physical attackers.
Int/Pie are for casters.

Stat gains scale increasingly, so balancing is NOT recommended. The higher your stat, the more it gives you per level.
