Well I mean, X6 both takes lives away liberally and showers you in them due to the reploid rescues, not that they matter with checkpoints. But if you've gathered a lot of lives from rescues and then stumble into High Max's room without a weakness that can defeat him, and you don't have the Escape option available, the problem is that you have to sit there and waste your time letting him kill you over and over just to get back to stage select. You could alternatively just reset the game, but then you'd have to collect all the shit on that route a second time whenever (or if ever) you visit it again.

He isn't even hard, but Dynamo is perfectly beatable, so throwing a stone wall in the player's path that they have to bash their brains out against if they don't have the tools to beat it is bad design. Even if beating High Max before reaching the final stages actually cuts to end game sooner, like how collecting 3000 Nightmare Souls does too.
