Widely considered one of the best shmups, just play it. It's also a good entry-point shmup, rather easy. Personally never got that into Ikaruga because i dont find it very compelling to play.

If you like Astro Boy then you'll most likely enjoy Tiny Toons Scary Dreams. Astro Boy engine is based off of Scary Dreams, and they play almost identical in terms of gameplay.
