I'm not trolling. It's in my top 3 favorite games of all time. And it's not nostalgia talking, I replay it every couple years and still get a lot of joy out of it. The music is top notch, the style and graphics are a perfect compliment to the setting and story, and the characters are memorable.

I know a lot of people hated this game because it was a non-traditional CastleVania, but I honestly believe that had it not been a CastleVania game or had people been able to get over the fact that it tried something new, it would have been better embraced by the gaming community.

Try it yourself, without any preconceived expectations, and decide if you like it for what it is. Also consider that there's an "expanded" version (Legacy of Darkness) that loses the fun voice acting but offers two more characters and an expanded environment to explore.

Also, if you enjoy the graphics and mood, check out the Echo Night games on Playstation.

I truly hope you enjoy the game, Anon.

There was a time when I thought I would give up playing video games forever. After the N64, I thought "This is the pinnacle. This, right here, is the best it will ever get. How could the N64 be topped?" I believed that the experience of playing N64 ruined me for other video game systems for life. The games are so realistic, so life-like, so beautifully detailed and easy to control, I looked at 2 analog sticks and thought "Why do you need 2 analog sticks for 3d games when one stick works SO GOOD." I only played my N64 for the past 20 years and nothing else. I am just beginning to see there might be some games released in the past 2 decades that are worth playing. I'm really trying hard to see the value in gaming past the height of 3d gaming technology that is the N64.

dual analog didn't really become a thing until 6th gen, during 5th gen they weren't used, PlayStation got dualshock around 1998, but most games still used the regular d-pad.

So. Many. Great. Games! And if you're an RPG fan, woah boy are you in for a treat. The N64 is a 3d RPG POWERHOUSE! Do you like 3d sports games from the mid-90's? N64 has got you covered in spades. 2d platformers, side-scrollers, and shooters are BO-RING. No one ever liked them anyway. And CD quality music is dumb. Give me cartridge based music anyday. Symphony quality cartridge based music is the way to go. And the textures! I haven't even touched on how well the textures hold up in 2017. When the NX was announced with cartridges, my first thought was "YES! We're getting the N64 Part 2!"

Taken as a whole the N64's library is pretty bed but it's an oversimplification to say that only the dozen or so masterpiece games are any good at all. Castlevania 64 is actually a really interesting game to illustrate this. When it came out it wasn't one of the OMG A++ games, in part because of diverging so much from the 2D versions. Now thanks to Dark Souls there's a much bigger interest in 3D ARPGs but in hindsight the camera does hold Castlevania back. This is one of the few consistently second tier N64 games which is nice just to know that they do exist and not all N64 games should be graded pass/fail.

And yes, I refer to it as Ultra 64, because this system deserves nothing less than an epic name to describe the power it has. The graphics power, but also the power to change minds, change perspectives, and yes, maybe even change the world? I heard NASA has 500 N64's linked together to help launch space craft.
