How are you gonna say collecting all the colors of the GBC is hoarding but collecting the colors of the N64 controllers is "collecting"? They're like the same size. I agree with those shitty mcdonalds toys though. Unless you have a strong attachment to them.

Also the N64 controllers are notorious for wearing out so one or two spare can't hurt, while Gameboys are notorious for their durability.

There's nothing sadder than some fool collector hoarding videogame stuff that will never be used and others that would actually use them missing out.

>Collector and hoarder mean the same thing
Except they don't.
Collecting is the act of obtaining, having, storing(and using, depending on the object) something for the sake of completion, where completion is defined by the collector, as in you might want to collect all Nintendo games games, not necessarily all games ever, or more usually, collect only the games you're interested in.
Hoarding is the act of obtaining, having, storing(but NOT using, even if the object is made to be used) something for the sake of accumulation(the thrill of obtaining never ceases), for the sake of having more(you want even objects you're not interested into because the one you have and are interested into are not enough), even if you already have the object("hurr durr i have 7 identical DMG-01"), often justifying further acquisitions of the same object with it having minor differences("A DMG-01 with a non working led, I don't have it, I must have it!"), and in the worst cases, justifying it even with dumb reasons("i already had 8 DMG-01, but i bought a 9th one cause it was only 2 dollars!, I couldn't leave it there!")

For me, i draw the line at collecting more of the same item for relative non-minor yet not substantial differences depending on the reasons and commitment to it.
Having all colors of the first gameboy cause you must have them all no matter how much it'll cost = hoarding.
Having all colors of the first gameboy cause you casually stumbled on them and they were cheap enough, while also not caring if you don't have them ALL = collecting.

>>FML. My DC laser died and the cheapest replacement I can find on ebay is $25. Fucking resellers.

Dreamcast lasers rarely die. The diode itself is VERY robust. It's built to DVD laser stadards, but operates at less than half the power.

It's more likely the motors die, and both of those motors have standard off the self replacements you can buy from Mouser for under $5 each.

Assuming you can solder two wire, you can repair any "broken" dreamcast for under $15, and it will probably be quieter, as the newer model motors are less noisy than the old 1999 tier ones.

I'm hardly one to talk seeing as I have multiple of each game boy model, plus three TVs, one of them a 27" CRT, sitting unused in a closet.

That said, I'm getting to the point of seeing physical game collections as more clutter than collection. With emulation and moreover flash carts/ODE mods, it's hard to see the value in having your games distributed over several hundred or thousand pieces of plastic as opposed to one cart/card per system. That said, obstacles like imperfect emulation of graphics or sound are a real hindrance to this theory. I'm on the fence about an everdrive n8, for example, on account of it not supporting FC expansion audio (even on a famicom which I find strange). But at that point you could almost justify just buying a one off game, playing it, and then selling it. It's not like you need to own a game forever after you buy it.

I started to hoard books, but caught myself pretty early. Now I only collect hard back (try to get library bindings) so I went from a whole bookcase of sci-fi and shit in paperback to one shelf.

A paperback is like 'I want to read this as cheaply and easily as possible' which has been totally supplanted by audible. Hardback is like 'I love THIS book and want to be able to sit back and enjoy this optimally.'

I felt a similar way with games. I have pretty much just hung onto my childhood games, and picked up some I really wanted like solar jetman and advenures of lolo and crystalis.

I am hanging onto my lightgun games, especially the sega master system ones.

If I just want to play 90% of games I'm going to emulate, but if the planets align I can play one of my childhood favorites for full feels.

Obsessing over yard sales and thrift shops just shows stinginess. No other collector market does this. Lunchbox fags would be nothing without the internet, and yard sales/flea markets/thrift stores either have absolutely nothing but sports games because people would rather trade their good games in to gamestop or when you do find something you want it's incredibly rare. The range of interests you'd need to efficiently collect from these places after 2010 implies hoarder mentality, you just hoard old technology for good deals.

Ebay isn't the problem, the memes are, the people willing to pay 90 dollars for smash bros are and the resellers who snipe everything auctioning for a decent price are the worst.

Give it a few more years. The bubble won't burst but itll deflate. Games have nothing on comics or antiques
