Ultima 8 is a decent idea ruined by a rushed release. A few more years in development and it could have been something like Diablo but unfortunately it's just a jumbled mess.
Criticism of Ultima 9 is overblown since it's mainly the writing that's poorly done.

If it was called "Ultima side quest whatever: Pagen" in stead of "Ultima 8", people would have appreciated it more. But since it was titled and sold as a main line title when it's more like a spin off, people lose their shit.

Plenty of other fantastic games have been as well.
Sure, it would be neat to have it in the oven for another year, but it still a good game as is.
Wizadry 8 was rushed because Sirtech was running out of money, its amazing. Diablo 1 was rushed due to the game's formula radically changing mid development and the addition of multiplayer which was never originally in the plans, its amazing

That's what Crusader is for.

My problem wasn't that it was an action game or that it wasn't set in Britannia. It was just not very fun as an action game and the plot severely disjointed.
Pagan was also not Guardian's home world that had been built up in UW2 and SI but rather just another subjugated world just like the eight you visited in UW2

Fallout 1 and 2 are some of my favorite RPGs, and they have tons of cut content. I played buggy ass Fallout 2 at release, and it still ended up in my top 10 before the patches.

Going crazy over "what could have been" isn't going to help unless you do something like the Fallout 2 restoration patch.

Totally fair criticism on the plot front, nothing I can defend on that.
For gameplay, Crusader does do the action better (god I wish there was a 3) but I do enjoy the exploration that U8 gives. Finding weird shit in people's houses, breaking in to places, steeling and doing everything possible while not trying to get cought and insta killed... I guess I just really like fucking around in the U8 world.

The plot in the early Ultimas is paper thin and doesn't have any obvious jumps or missing content like 8.
The closest is 7-2 since EA rushed that out as well.
Another thing with 8 is that they made an addon that could have fixed some of the gameplay and filled some gaps in the plot but EA decided it wasn't profitable to release it so they canned the finished product.

For 8 you obviously want the patched version but I believe it's more common than the original one anyway.
There's also Pentagram if you want to play in higher resolutions and with a few extra keys.

For 9 get 1.19H. Beautiful Britannia doesn't cover much so use it at your own choice. Extended Setup Utility is useful if you don't like editing inis.
I would advise against the monster/economy, dialog or freedom mod for the first playthrough.

I enjoyed 8, but didn't feel it lived up to the 7s. I also had that same thought Diablo looked a lot of like Ultima 8 back then.

Admittedly, the platforming in 8 wasn't good, but to me, the game was interesting in a different way. Being dropped into a conquered world of the Guardian's, you learned quickly of this oppressive new world and the abilities of the four elements. One would think to get out they should fulfill the destiny of the Avatar and master the four elements, but no, fuck you, you only get Earth after performing unspeakable things to the dead, Water is hereditary, Fire hates your guts and will insta-kill you for any petty crime you commit, and Air is just bullshit. No, in this game you do not master the elements and bring balance to the world and free it from the Guardian, you just fucking leave in a "fuck this place" manner. I think that is pretty interesting and somewhat unexpected for me at the time.

As mentioned, the gameplay with the platforming is awkward, as is the norm with determining height and distance in an isometric view. It is way more linear than what I was used to with Ultima 7: The Black Gate, and feeling more restrictive than the linearity of Serpent Isle, as the game would crash badly on any deviation from the path. The game did emphasize its many frames of animation (for its day), and the graphics were pretty appealing to me. In the end, maybe it is all nostalgia I am speaking about, since I have not gone back to play the game once I beat it.

It adds a quicksave/quickload function so you don't have to browse through your journal whenever you fell into a puddle.
Platforming is still a mess, they just removed moving platforms and allowed aimed jumped instead of the fixed length ones.

On the assumption that this is a serious question, he's an early Internet celebrity reviewer of video games and other things who was pretty popular several years ago. His best known (at least around 4chan) videos are his FF8 review, his FF10 review (both of which he thought were terrible games), and his reviews of the entire Ultima series, which he was quite positive about up until 8 and 9.

I think he's also one of the first people ever that 4chan accused of being a cuck, so he's got that going too.

That's interesting. Now that you mention it, I think I may have saved prior to every jumping portion with those moving platforms. If that's the case then I suppose it is an improvement, because it was all instant deaths all over the place in the game.

Thanks for the thorough response. I seriously did not know. I appreciate the respectful answer, and great context. I am a bit inclined to believe I have low standards, so I did enjoy FF8 (probably more for its side games than actual game), but definitely didn't see much value in FF10 plus admittedly Ultima 8 was not on the same level as the Ultima 7s, therefor my opinion may be in line with this Spoony. I may check the reviews out one day but at this time unlikely. Thanks again.

What's there to refute? It's an optional question for newbies.
You could ask what paladins are in 4-7, just that they used keywords instead of whole sentences.
Ultima 8 had a "What is a cutpurse" question which is far worse since that's a standard English word with no special relevance to the world.
