I've been watching kinamania lately and I got interested in Dendy and Nintendo bootlegs. Any recommendations or shitty games that are worth a playthrough?

Pripyat?

Why are people so fascinated by Dendy? It's literally a bootleg famicom, the games are mostly the same too.

I think mainly the sub-culture it spawned from countries that had non existent official video games (or just were expensive) in which case you had tons of kids growing up with mislabeled games, different packaging, being a generation behind, anti cheat methods (ex final boss with infinite hp if the konami logo was obfuscated) and just in general finding out years later that the american kids grew up with something completely different even if most games remained the same.

I don't see how you can be into retro games and not be fascinated by it. It's a completely different world even though so many of the games are the same, and the whole idea of an entire market being completely centered around bootlegs and being essentially an 8-bit wild west is fucking awesome.

In Russia at least it was considered "official" and somehow more real than other famiclones. Often the same level of autismality we display here on /vr/ about crt, real hardware and such

"you're not even experiencing it for real!"

This all left it more well remembered(and loved)and hated and the legacy lingers

>> No.3981189

So do Russians and other people who grew up with bootleg consoles now buy the actual games or would they rather just take the bootlegs when they want older consoles?

It seems there is a market for these. Dendy "originals" with these stickers or with their boxes get sold as such on auction sites, and aren't as cheap to come by as you would expect for bootlegs.

I've bought a few old bootleg famicom carts from sellers on ebay, and it's kind of surprising how many of them seem to think that because a cart is a bootleg from the 90s that makes it more valuable and sought-after. I can kind of understand the ones with the Steepler branding on them going for more, but you see things like bootlegs of the first Batman game going for 30 dollars, which is more than any official release of the same game. It also doesn't help that people think a bootleg of a rare game somehow makes the bootleg worth more, but I think a lot of that just has to do with ebay and people not knowing you can find bootleg famicom games anywhere else.

Growing up with a Famiclone was great.
Multicarts and lots of weird asian games. Famiclones got more japanese games that weren't localized for NES.
It was even possible to buy RPGs, I never saw bootleg FF or Dragon Quest, but I remember buying a Dragon Ball Z RPG, and the Captain Tsubasa II game which is technically an RPG-styled soccer game.
I played and mastered those games as a kid, even with the language barrier.

I think he has scoliosis. Also he's a Slav.

And as for fun bootlegs they don't exist on the NES except for some novelties like Somari or the FFVII port. There were some nice Taiwanese RPGs on the Genesis but not all of them are translated.

That's what I'm saying, the whole reason it's fascinating to Americans is because we didn't grow up with it. We played a lot of the same games but the entire external experience around those games is completely different.

This, but without the pretentiousness or hipsterism, it was just chinese bootleggers trying to make hacks that would appeal to kids, that's why there's so many Mario hacks.
I got to play some really good japanese-only games thanks to Mario hacks.

OP here, I've been digging around and found this. It seems very common in terms of the bootleg world.

OP here, I've been digging around and found this. It seems very common in the bootleg world and even had a feature on kinamania. In the wiki article I read it said it had standalone "release" and a multicart release as well. It plays like shit but I like to see more stuff like this.

Im southamerica, and bootlegs worked the very same way than in Russia. But theres one critical difference: we already knew that those games were bootlegs. In Russia kids were told on NATIONAL TELEVISION that Dendy was an official videogame company, that developed consoles and software, and there was officially over 20 mario games for it. Thats so bizarre i dont have words to explain it.

These two are being made right now, really cheap and have awesome assortments of games but if you're OP and looking for more Dendy-like games just go on eBay and buy whatever random filthy XXX-in-1 is cheap.

Rocman X is definitely a megaman ripoff but it's an entirely original Hong Kong game otherwise. Apparently actual carts exist but I've never seen one or even a picture of one.
