Why is Atari so cheap?

Did it go through an expensive phase? Did the bubble pop? Or is it just not desirable? I played a lot as a kid at my friend's house, but never owned it myself. I'm pleasantly surprised to find that even ebay bundles with a ton of good games are often quite affordable.

There's a whole lot of them in the wild, and it isn't nostalgic for a lot of the people buying retro shit right now. I grew up with a 2600 despite being born a decade late for it, definitely a lot of fun if you're into early arcade style gameplay.

Oh I am. It's weird, because apart from the graphics, a lot of it is comparable to NES in terms of gameplay.

>> No.3972593

Most people who grew up with it and collect for it already have one and the games they want. There's definitely some new people getting into it, but for the vast majority of people who started collecting retro games in the last 5-10 years, NES is the cutoff point and nothing before then is worth playing.

The supply far outweighs the demand.

It's hard to justify paying $10 for a game when you can see everything there is to see in it in 5 minutes.

The exact same can be said for a ton of NES and even SNES games, yet some of them get $100+.

i think most people who grew up with atari dont really give a fuck about video games now.

Wholeheartedly agree. I got Popeye for the 2600 recently, and while it lacks a lot of features from the arcade version or NES port, it plays quite nicely. I feel like a lot of Atari versions of games become fun for different reasons than the source material.

It's very simple-
There's almost zero demand for Atari or most consoles older than the North American NES. Most people these days don't find games that old and simple very entertaining outside Atari diehards.

There were and are some very very expensive VCS games to own but I do feel like their value may have dropped somewhat in the last ten years if that's what you're asking.

The 2600 had a dramatically different life cycle than most consoles though so you can't apply it as a rule. Therre were SO many copies made of so many games and the WORST were practically given away free for a long time.

it's too retro

20 somes didn't grow up with it, for the most part, and there's no hype aura around their games

nobody really thinks of pacman like they think of goldeneye, you know?

Pac man is great, goldeneye sucks

Because there's millions of them. Because for you "Atari" is a common as fuck 4 switch. Check the price for a PAL H6 lately?

>> No.3974052

atari should have dropped consoles and stick to arcades and computers

Is it true that the PAL 7800 can play all NTSC games without a problem but not vice versa? I'm considering getting one but I still haven't decided should I go with which region console.

lack of games with depth so they lack replay ability. it did go through a bit of a bump in the mid 2000s, but never really had a big collection scene outside of some communities. also, the over production of the atari and games is what brought about the crash so there's plenty of them around and lots of copies of games. the hardware was also copied alot so even if you really want to play the games, you can pick up a 2600 clone for nothing.

that's not how it works

Don't know. Sounds like BS. I've written 2600 games and there's no way they'll work on a different system. Since the 7800 can run 2600 games it's a definite no on those. Not sure about things written specifically for the 7800. I'd moved on and was doing games for the Amiga by the time that shit poked it turtle head out.

Well I recently started hunting down games I missed, and I'm grateful that they are cheap
I remember they were lots made so that maybe one of the reasons
I was born in the 89 and had the 2600 and pic related thanks to my dad having them before I was born
