3967618 No.3967618 [Reply] [Original]

A plebbitor just found a disc with the original source code to starcraft and gave it back to blizzard for some cheap made in china shit, overwatch, and le up boats. Gone forever.

>Last month, Plebbit user Khemist49 made a truly unlikely find: a gold master source code disc of the original StarCraft. From 1998. At first, he didn’t know what to do with it. Ultimately, he sent it to Blizzard, who was very grateful to have it back.
>For his troubles, he received a copy of Overwatch and $250 in Blizzard store credit.

The truth of the matter is that this wouldn't do much for the original Starcraft. Any "source ports" or improvement projects based on the source would get C&D'd as soon as Blizzard got wind of them (and trust me, some moron will will eventually inform Blizzard about them or they'll find out on their own), forcing the source ports to remain underground on shady Russian sites that may or may not pack them into malware-infested installers. In this scenario, their would be few players on these services except for some Russian and other third-world teens playing them.

It would be interesting to examine the code for curiosity's sake, but any actual improvements for everyone would be nil.

A source port would only legally work if it was released by Blizzard themselves. People seem to think that "source release = legal", which is not true at all. The iD game sources were eventually released under the GPL licenses and were released by iD themselves. If DOS Quake's source was illegally released by a cracker group in the mid to late 90s, iD would have very solid ground to C&D source ports because it's based off of stolen property; the unauthorized release of the game's source code.

Chances are you aren't going to be pursued legally for leaking prototypes unless it is something that has yet to be released or something that was recently released/is modern. Prototypes of old games and the like are leaked all the time and, unless I am unaware of something, nothing comes of it.

Vanilla would be destroyed because know there is no "official" version. Everyone with their own mods, instead of a single community that shares the same rules, you'd have to deal with loads of different communities.

Mods are not a bad thing as long as they share the same root. With the full source code, you could potentially replace the original net protocol (for example, for optimization purposes) which would make impossible for different starcraft versions to communicate.

Yes, some games have been quite successful thanks to that level of modding (Doom). But i'm not sure you can extrapolate that to others. I think that, what makes SC and other Blizzards games popular is that everyone is sharing the same experience.

>> No.3968446

A full source release would also open the doors for cheaters. Quake 1 was tormented by an influx of cheaters years after its source was released since the source gave hack designers a much better understanding of the engine and how to exploit it. The problem was solved when the community eventually developed successful anti-cheat protocols in source ports.

Blizzard likely doesn't want a repeat of what happened to Quake 1, especially since the original Starcraft is still very popular in certain parts of the world, such as South Korea. A gigantic influx of cheaters would decimate the game.

Regarding prototypes, it depends on the company, how old the game, is and how old the leak is.

If it's a prototype of some old NES game or a dead 16-bit era franchise, like Ecco the Dolphin, the original owners will usually not give a shit and you can release it freely. However, if you've got a WIP build of the latest Call of Duty game or another AAA game (Fallout, etc), the odds are high that the company that owns the franchise will be very pissed about you leaking it and will try to use legal action against you and to remove the prototype from the internet.

It also depends on when and how the prototype was acquired. Some people got in hot water because they leaked several prototype maps for Half-Life 2: Episode 1 and 2 a few months ago. It's likely because these maps were taken from Valve themselves fairly recently (from their Source developer's resources IIRC). On the other hand, if a Half-Life 2 build from mid-late 2002 that was stolen during a tech demo presentation Valve was doing traded hands IRL several times, forgotten about, then was rediscovered and finally uploaded many years later, I'd expect the worst to be Gabe making sarcastic quips about in in his next interview because of how long it was since the original leak happened, how old HL2 is now, and that there was no way to pursue legal action against the original leaker (since his name has been long since forgotten).

It would be a much MUCH bigger inconvenience and time sink to create a Reddit account, find and post on the most applicable subreddit, get threatened by Blizzard, and mail it to them in exchange for $30 worth of shit they literally have lying around in case someone calls them out on social media.

Blood is build engine, same as duke. I'm sure it also has the same file format as duke so it's only a matter of implementing new fuctions that aren't available in dn3d.

>> No.3968657

>>3968651
Like I said that's not how it works. In short....

"Build" is more of a renderer than an engine.
What one would consider an "engine" is the sum of two things in Build games, the "Build code" on one side, by Silverman, and the "game code" on the other side by the devs of each game. The sum of the two make "the engine".

So only 'half' of the engine is 'shared' between Blood and DN3D, and even saying that is very untrue because not only they're both based on a different version of it, but the devs of Blood modified the "Build" side by reverse engeeniring it.

> the same file format
The map format is different.

So no, you can't just "modify EDuke32 to support the extra function of Blood", that doesn't make any sense, and if it was that simple it'd have been done long ago. Even if the sourcecode was available it would be easier to start from scratch, there is probably very little of EDuke32 you could use for it.

Probably no one. Look at the bids, it was a bullshit listing, probably meant to make news or drum up hype for a "real" listing.

Literally the ONLY IDs still showing up on the bid list, including the winner, are zero feedback accounts, both of which are likely sockpuppets of the seller or ebin troll kiddies. It claims that there were 16 bidders, but those IDs aren't showing up apparently. They probably either retracted or were banned or something, I don't know.

In any event, even "sold" listings on ebay should be inspected before they are assumed to be legit sales - if something sells to a new user with very low feedback, there's certainly a chance it is a phony sale to a troll, a failed raise-the-price shill bid, a seller who was just testing the waters to value their item but wanted to make sure they didn't have to actually sell it, or even a seller trying to boost the perceived market price of an item by generating phony sales (which can perhaps be a technique to get an actual sale to someone who thinks they are getting a second chance once it gets mysteriously relisted due to a non-existent NPB).

If you read up on SC development, the code sound pretty awful. Kotaku article 5942128

Given all the issues working against the team, you might think it was hard to identify a single large source of bugs, but based on my experiences the biggest problems in StarCraft related to the use of doubly-linked linked lists.

Linked lists were used extensively in the engine to track units with shared behavior. With twice the number of units of its predecessor - StarCraft had a maximum of 1600, up from 800 in Warcraft 2 - it became essential to optimize the search for units of specific types by keeping them linked together in lists.

Recalling from distant memory, there were lists for each player's units and buildings, lists for each player's "power-generating" buildings, a list for each Carrier's fighter drones, and many many others.

All of these lists were doubly-linked to make it possible to add and remove elements from the list in constant time - O(1) - without the necessity to traverse the list looking for the element to remove - O(N).

Unfortunately, each list was "hand-maintained" - there were no shared functions to link and unlink elements from these lists; programmers just manually inlined the link and unlink behavior anywhere it was required. And hand-rolled code is far more error-prone than simply using a routine that's already been debugged.

Some of the link fields were shared among several lists, so it was necessary to know exactly which list an object was linked into in order to safely unlink. And some link fields were even stored in C unions with other data types to keep memory utilization to a minimum.

So the game would blow up all the time. All the time.

It probably has a Visual Studio project file, which would only require a simple open project.
The most likely obstacle would be unavailable third party library dependencies, like the RAD Game Tools sound and video codecs.
This can be worked around, because all the actual third party code is probably located in DLLs from the SC distro.

Or some people think that after 20 years and it becoming an iconic game that will be remembered for decades to come it's in the best interest of society for it to become public domain. There is a difference between "FUCK COPYRIGHT! FREE EVERYTHING" and "This is big enough that it no longer belongs to the artist, it's out grown them and it would be in everyone's interest to prevent them from living off the same song for 100 years and encourage them to produce more content." People aren't shitting on the sole idea of soft modding an Xbox they're shitting on the retard stating that you should only buy an Xbox and soft mod it if you wanna play the games when there's many reasons why people would prefer emulation some of which include the convenience of not having to buy an entirely new console to play only a couple of games or wanting to have them be available in the future once a shitload of original Xboxes die out from people not bothering to remove the capacitors.

But all this discussion about the Xbox belongs on /v/ anyway.

Nobody said you should only buy an Xbox and softmod it. What was actually said is that there's no reason to give a shit about one devkit when it doesn't help with the homebrew scene or emulation scene, and that emulation is a pretty moot point when you can software modify the actual hardware out of the box for free. There's really no point to limit yourself to shitty emulation when the actual hardware is cheap/many times free if you can find one with a broken disc drive.

Sorry for the drive-by post, but generally, this sort of thing makes me upset because decades later in the future, source codes, original assets, and what have you will be lost to the sands of time or at the very least rotting in a vault somewhere to wither and die as they change hands a few times in corporate buyouts. This sort of thing was especially bad in the Japanese scene where devs released a product with zero intent to preserve the original assets for later generations.

While there is a certain amount of entitlement from anyone who shares that frame of mind, there's also a quite a bit of indignation from people upset that pieces of history from their favorite hobby will be lost or destroyed and future generations will only get snapshots of old video games for viewing rather than a more complete picture. It is the same sort of wish that we could ask questions about the Mona Lisa, the Sistine Chapel, or any other precious work of art to better understand it. Corporate copyright is at odds with this line of thought due to being purely profit driven.

Source code is basically the file/s that are readable by humans, written in a programming language. That means it's very easily alterable.

If you're hacking/modding a game without its source code, you're usually just swapping assets(HD texture mods is literally just finding a jpeg and replacing it with your own), or editing what's in the RAM, which can limit the scope of what you're actually able to do.

If you have the source code, you have a lot more flexibility in what you're able to add or change.

This. I also understand the need for some kind of intellectual property while we don't have a society with another economic system in which knowledge can be freely spread.

However, to still hold on to source code from a 20 year old game is sick. They made a huge amount of profit from it already.

The original idea behind intellectual property was to stimulate innovation and creativity to prevent some other company from instantly stealing your idea. This is not the case anymore when a game is fucking 20 years old.

notice how games like doom and quake still have huge, active communities, with ports to all possible platforms, vr builds, elaborate gameplay and graphical modifications, total conversions, absurdly huge maps filled with hordes of enemies that the original game could never have supported etc. this is because id software had a policy of releasing their source code.

with source code access you have exactly what the developers had as they were making the game and you can do anything you want with it. compare it to something like morrowind, which also has an absurdly devoted fanbase but they're stuck with this unstable, badly performing old game. some fans were actually desperate enough to try to write the entire game again from scratch (openmw) but it's almost a decade since they started working on it and it's still nowhere near done. if they had the source code they would have delivered a badass modernized version of the engine in like six months.

not to mention there's enormous educational value for beginner programmers in analyzing and modifying video game source code.

The original intent of intellectual property was no such fucking thing. "Intellectual property" as a concept would have *horrified* every one of our Founders. What they espoused; copyright and patents, should never be confused with intellectual property. Intellectual property refers more toward an entire legal scaffolding of erroneously treating intangible things as tangible goods, a fool's game that can only end in accomplishing the exact opposite of the Founder's intent in even proposing such a radical concept (remember, copyright as envisioned by the Brits absolutely was what our copyright has become; a protectionist bit of lawyering designed to shield the already established press houses from any new competition whatsoever).

With that all said, the original purpose of American copyrights and patents was "to promote the advancement of the arts and sciences". No economic considerations whatsoever, save that a "subsidy" of sorts was being offered to people in exchange for them cranking out instantaneous culture and science (to use a bit of a Sid Meier term). It was supposed to be 20 years on both so the public could actually realise these "advancements".

Never ever was intellectual property (and all the authoritarian George Orwell bullshit it now drags along with it like some goddamned existential avalanche) supposed to be a thing. In fact this is why countries with weak copyright are now growing by leaps and bounds ahead of us; culture and advancement are both contributory and collaborative, they cannot be well accomplished in a country that thinks it now can get by on merely selling "intellectual property" to the world (in lieu of the manufacturing of actual physical goods it so idly tossed out the window).

trespasser had a source leak and unofficial fan builds are based on it. no legal response.

"newdark" is a modernization of the engine used in thief 1, thief 2, and system shock 2. the author does not admit to this, but it's an open secret that he's using the source code for the engine which leaked a couple years before. no legal response.

It's only a legal risk due to the insane legal bulwark they themselves helped to build. No sympathy from me.

This is why people like Richard Stallman were useful, for all his toejam-eating autism.
Now we live in a world where you literally cannot write code without infringing on someone's goddamn patent (code is eligible for *both* copyright and patent, did you know?).

i'm not asking you to feel sympathy towards a corporation, that's insane. you asked why they don't do what id did and the answer is that id was a room with some nerds in it and the alpha nerd had strong moral convictions about the exchange of knowledge, whereas blizzard is a subsection of a vast nightmare hive devoted to maximizing shareholder value. what id did will never happen again in the realm of big video games.

yeah just like how croteam totally didn't release recently a full source code of old Serious Sam games

nah man, that's an eastern european indie team trying to keep their semi-obscure retro throwback shooter alive. it's not even in the same ballpark as fucking id software at the peak of its fame releasing the source code for fucking doom.

as usual the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I'm sure the lack of industry tooling was still a problem back then. This stuff could have been worked out pretty quick with a chief engineer. Maybe gaming companies didn't have that model back then?

There's a thing called hardware degradation. In 10-20 years there will be no working XBox machines (they are more prone to that than older consoles), and so you won't be able to play anything on the original hardware.

This already began happening to many arcade boards from the 80's.
