Does anybody here speedrun any retro games?

I watched a video of four speedrunners racing in Super Mario World last night and it was... surprisingly cool.

I'd like to try Super Mario Bros. 3 speedrunning. How do I get started on it beyond just "try and beat the game fast?" I mean, I know that's part of it but it seems like there's a broad gap between being good at a game and being insanely fast at beating it.

try to copy stuff you see in a run and practice/memorize it. if a certain part is too hard, make something up yourself that you can do until you're good enough for the faster strats. go to http://www.speedrun.com/smb3/forum and ask questions. join the discord, make friends in the community, people are usually eager to help.

getting into speedrunning is pretty easy.

Original hardware and a CRT is your first step to reduce the input lag for frame perfect glitches and jumps.

Also look at guides and other runners to see what their strats are, if you want to practice specific levels or areas emulator and savestate until you get the technique.

Thanks. I'll practice on an emulator and on my sister's NES Mini until I can get my NES from my grandparents' place and buy a copy of SMB3 and a CRT.

Choose one.

In all seriousness, the best way to get into this "hobby" is to start with a speedrun of a game that no one gives a shit about. Pick a random NES game that only has a few levels and start from there.

Anything that has any notoriety (any mario game, zelda, sonic, etc.) has thousands of speed runners who have worked out every single method to speed up their runs. The well is pretty dry for these games as far as records go.

To put this into perspective, the guy who has the current Mario 1 world record has played the game over 50,000 times.

I don't speedrun. Most I'll do is a no death run, where I just play until I die, until I can clear a game with no deaths. But only for games I like playing enough to look for an excuse to keep playing.

Speedrunning doesn't even feel like playing a game for enjoyment anymore. There's no fun in it. Only frustration.

don't listen to this faggot. speedrunning a game you don't care about just to get an easy record is fucking retarded.

speedrun a game you have fun playing. focus on improving your own personal best.

This fuck is a liar. Find a random game you like that isn't popular and go from there. You will have to spend 8 hours a day for months to get anywhere near the speedruns on any popular game.

>You will have to spend 8 hours a day for months to get anywhere near the speedruns on any popular game.
not at all, you can speedrun any game without putting anywhere near that amount of time in. obviously to be the best you have to put work in, but acting like anyone who picks up the hobby is obligated to get a record is fucking absurd. the vast majority of speedrunners are not top runners.

>> No.3967327

I started speedrunning after transitioning. It helped me focus on something, no matter how trivial and pointless it might seem. You have to get to know the name and practice many times, learn the routes and necessary tricks. It's frustrating, so it's better to play a game you actually enjoy, which sometimes isn't necessarily one of your favorite games. Being a part of a community helps, most games have at least a few people willing to help other players and just take a collective effort to bring the times down rather than go for personal "world records".

Why would you speedrun and hold the record to some game absolutely no one gives a single fuck about?

Hey guys i got the top record on Robopon. Wew no one fucking cares, no one is gonna watch it on stream or youtube, even your friends who play games will serious not give a shit.

He wants to play Mario 3, probably wont ever hit the top 100 or even 200 runs, but if he wants to show off how good he is at least people will kind of care or think its a cool achievement.

I do some Super Metroid runs from time to time. The key is not to take it so seriously that it stops being fun. Just take it easy, improve your times, and don't worry about competing with the top runners.

And I'd disagree with the advice to play something unpopular unless it's a game you really love, because it means you'll be going it alone. In my opinion it's much more fun to be bad at a popular game because you have the support of a big community behind you.

Wrong. Only very few games have over a thousand runners and even then the majority of those are casuals who contribute nothing.

I did the same thing about 3 years ago. Super Mario Bros 3 is really fun to speedrun, but if you play on an emulator (which is where you should start) the timing is a lot different than on a real console hooked up to a CRT. Even hooking up to some LCD screens will give you a delay that is only noticeable when speedrunning.

Mario 3 is a good start, and very satisfying to be able to beat the first 3 worlds (I am talking about any% NO WARPS) so quickly. All I did was play the game casually for a few days to get the hang of the mechanics and then I watched a couple speedruns on youtube and tried to copy the little tricks they use. I did the same thing for Super Metroid which is also really satisfying to speedrun when you remember how much trouble you had as a kid playing it.

Good luck and remember it's all about having fun, some of these speedruns still take an hour if youre good so if that's too long then look up a game that can be beaten a lot quicker, my favourite is Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel that can be beaten in about 16 minutes easily.

I don't run SMB3 specifically, but why wouldn't a real console and a flashcart be better? Won't throw off your timing when switching from emulator to console, and you can use save states and Game Genie codes for debug mode, reentering levels, etc. to practice.

I don't really spend more time on speedrunning than what I would spend on playing games anyway. It's just sort of replaces my casual game time for a few months at a time until I get bored. Then I swap back to casual gaming (or no gaming) for a few months, then back to speedrunning, etc. Rinse and repeat.

I have made a 25mins speedrun of Exhumed, aka Powerslave, Saturn version.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nfxUZqHWcw

I used the PAL Saturn version of the game which is the fastest version (I'm not considering EX because it's a fan made remake and it's bad).

I used bomb jumping (like rocket jumping) to the max of its potential for sequence breaking, and also used other glitches and exploits.

I used to speedrun Hexen. Then I got the best time and quit for a few years. When I came back to it my time was beaten and I had gotten rusty as fuck, then when I was approaching my prime again a new game breaking glitch was found that completely turned me off.
Now I don't speedrun anymore, but I would be open to trying a new game if I ever find one.
