Is it just me or is FFV the least "Final Fantasy" of all the games in the series?

Don't get me wrong, it was an alright game, but it just doesn't seem as though it should have a number so to speak.

Anyone else feel this way?
If not, what are your sentiments otherwise?

I haven't played it what's it about?

It's similar to I and III, so it should definitely be a numbered FF

It's literally the most Final Fantasy game of all the series up to VII

For all of the games proceeding it, it had the most in common with half of them, with added elements from the other two still.

Mechanically, 4 is, by far, the least "Final Fantasy" of all the numbered games that count as retro. It's basically a really melodramatic Dragon Quest.

It's the most final fantasy. It has a lot of throwback to the first few games, especially 1.

>crystals central to the plot
>job system expanded
>high fantasy adventure
>ancient civilizations and robots

why do you think that?

it's very close to the structure of FF3

okay, sure

That's the thing, each of the final fantasies brought something new to the table

2; actual characters
3:Job system
4:More than four party members with set job classes.
5,....Blue Magic?
6. magicite, learning magic through said item, precursor to materia. Equipable skills (jump, steal etc,),swappable party members
7..First game in 3D, first modern game, limit breaks,
8. I just want to forget this one, triple triad?
9.Equipable traits,

Truth be told it was just a better 3

FF5 was the last real classic Final Fantasy.

You're probably comparing it to FF6+, which are completely different sorts of games.

Exdeath was a damn tree

actually, limit breaks were introduced in VI as decisive attacks, they were just implemented so badly most people didn't even realize they existed
II had the levelling system which I guess was more influential for SaGa and elder scrolls, (also chocobos, the back row, cid)
V let you combine skills from different jobs which would be reused for Tactics
IX's system is kind of a crap version of Lufia II's equipment system (hey at least I didn't need to grind for AP there)
VII's Limit breaks also work kinda similarly to Lufia II's IP system now that I think about it

>the only new thing it introduced was blue magic
and a metric ton of jobs, some of which became fan favorites like Samurai and Time Mage.
>seemed overtly silly at times
I like that, it seems like a drunken D&D campaign Square turned into a game.
>the world seems as bit plain in comparison to say IV or VI
I find it pretty interesting actually, like the exotic bestiary (fairy orcs!) in Galuf's world and the design of the merged world - for example, Surgate being next to the Ancient library and the scholars meeting each other, or the fact that the new terrain allows you to run around the world on a chocobo like you could in FF3.
> only four main characters
five
>battle system introduced nothing new aside from changing classes like the other games
It introduced learning and setting abilities to other classes which is a huge change. The game is designed all about this customization and allows you to make characters more balanced (or unbalanced), for example by giving a Berserker a weapon skill with better accuracy.
>story wasn't as fleshed out as the others
>villain wasn't as developed as the others....
True, though I really like how Exdeath is introduced.

No not really it's pretty "Final Fantasy", plus the job system made it one of my favourites

>> No.3967301

Compared to the games that came after it, maybe, but when you look at the history of FF up to V, IV is really the odd one out.

No? It's the most FF game I can think of.

>aside from XI
11's 'job system' is actually simplified from FF5 and is more of a standard class change system. A true job system could never work in an MMO because it wouldn't be timesinky enough.

Final Fantasy II is the most Final Fantasy of the series. From changing up mechanics from the first game to introducing various monsters, people, and what have you that appear throughout the series.

Would the series have been as shaken up without it?
