is there anything more tedious than the first couple of hours of older rpgs?

Yeah, the first couple of hours in post-SNES RPGs, where the whole thing at best is 90% cutscenes, 10% gameplay.

Yes, the last couple of hours of any RPG.

Yes. Try getting the maximum amount of points in the Desert Bus minigame from Penn and Teller's Smoke and Mirrors.

You have to drive all the way from Tuscon, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada at a top speed of 45 MPH. There's no traffic, hardly anything to look at, and if you go off-road, you stall and get towed all the way back to Tuscon (in real time, no less). Assuming you don't get towed, the drive takes eight hours, and you need to be alert and active the whole time. Reaching Vegas gets you one point, and driving all the way back to Tuscon gets you another. Unless you've sped the game up using tools, it will take you 33 days of continuous play to reach the maximum score of 99.

This. Even in games where this shouldn't be a problem, like the 3D Ys games, I still have to sit through a shitload of cutscenes and dialogue that makes any attempt at replaying them a chore and a half.

Did you also know that Super Mario Bros 2, wasn't even originally a Mario game to begin with? Instead it was a Japanese only game named Doki Doki Panic with completely different characters!

I actually FF did a good job with the the intro actually, it's quite interesting, especially for the time. I really liked how they almost immediately throw you into a boss battle, whom you also fight as the final boss. It's also cool how it's revealed that the entire sequence was a prologue as the true opening that plays when the heroes are crossing the bridge.

In Mother you had two "boss battles" back to back like in the first five minutes? And you were left to your own devices soon after that to explore the world.

I think after the 80s there was a definite urge to create these sprawling epics and I don't blame them at all, given the context of the times.

Also, I think the start is actually the most fun in these types of games because they haven't gotten on your nerves yet. Especially if the game is going to be over 30 hours long, then maybe at that point it's not even worth playing because you can't trick yourself into believing you're a starry-eyed 12 year old again.

FF's start is also interesting because it's literally a ballsy jab at DQ I with "Yeah, saving one princess is shit-tier adventure. You've spent half a game on it, we're doing it in 15 minutes". Pity that the funds were so miserable it took too long to develop and DQ II came out before.

Final Fantasy honestly gets a bad rap. You spend FAR less time grinding in even the oldest FF games than you do in Persona 1.

It is funny you use FF1 as an example, given that in less than 10 minutes you start killing and plundering dungeons, the main experience of the game.

loved the tedium of the original Dragon Quest

no teammates, no gimmacks, just take your hero, grind up levels, and save the kingdom. It's kinda comfy in a way

Wut yourself. You can literally stroll right up to the Temple of Fiends at the start of the game. If you take two minutes to equip yourself first you'll even come out victorious. It will definately take less than 10 mins unless you really dawdle.

More tedious?

How about shit like today's RPG's which are basically "walk around for half an hour with nothing to do" simulators.

I have never understood people saying there's too much grinding in the FF series. I've played through the first 8 and am currently playing the 9th and I think the only times I've legitimately grinded on a first, blind play through is on my current run of 9(probably didn't even need to, I just felt like enemies were doing a bit more damage than I liked) and on 5 for some extra abilities. I usually do all the grinding I need by playing the game and doing side quests and shit.
