What game makes you genuinely happy to play?

Not like "Oh this reminds me of X time in my life" but "yea, this is really good. I'm glad I found this"

Spyro the Dragon. Stewart Copeland's soundtrack and the art direction of the game make me genuinely happy.

Same with Suuper Mario 64. Again, the music and the odd surrealness the game's environments had are top comfy for me.

Centipede has never not made me happy. Just pick up the controller, play it for about an hour... all of life's problems gone.

I'm not even picky about port, though I have mad love for the 7800 version.

That is one classic image. LET ME TELL YOU.

Star Fox 64's team makes me smile. People really like making jokes about how useless Slippy is and how much of an asshole Falco is and how annoying Peppy can be but that's just who they are, they're your comrades and they give it their all to help you out when the going gets tough. I find it endearing how hard Falco tries to keep the enemy off of you in Bolse, I find it charming how scared Slippy can get yet still manages to keep up with the team, though I do get annoyed and Peppy telling me where to shoot a boss once I've already shot it's weak point so many times. It's still a very happy experience for me.

Another game that makes me happy is Boogie Wings. WebM related. It's the same kind of feeling you'd get from playing a game like Katamari. There's no real need to explain it, I feel.

Tooie was great. It always cheered me up whenever I played it and would take my mind off things whenever I was in a real shitty mood. Unlike Kazooie where I felt like I was doing the motions, Tooie would genuinely take my mind off of everything that would be bothering me.

Nearly every retro game I still play. There are really only a couple of games that I would be willing to play purely out of nostalgia; if it's not a genuinely good game, I'm not going to waste my time with it.

That said, I'll single out Super Metroid as a game that to this very day is without peer in its genre.

>>3961151
Also this. I doubt I would've even liked it that much as a kid, but playing it for the first time a couple of years ago was quite the experience.

You're okay, anon.

I played Vagrant Story for the first time about two years ago and was just blown away. That a game could have such great aesthetics and atmosphere despite the PS1's hardware was just so surprising to me. Atop that, the gameplay was satisfying as fuck and combat felt great. Easily one of my favorite experiences ever.

Ys wasn't a technical masterpiece by any terms but I was shocked by how fucking rad that OST is. It's a fun little RPG for sure and has a great sense of forward momentum, but I forgive a lot of its flaws because of that godly music.

Outside of those two, I'm struggling to think of a game that perfectly encapsulates OP's feeling. Both examples are not-/vr/ but probably Metroid Prime and Wario Land 3.

>> No.3963107

>>3963096
Agree completely. Ys 1 and 2 I was really enjoying though because like you said that OST, but also there's no filler unless you're like me and get lost.

Lately it's Alien Soldier, Demon's Crest, Mega Man X, Dodonpachi, Espgaluda, Mighty Final Fight, Uncharted Waters: New Horizons, Sega Shadowrun, Shining Force, Phantasy Star IV, and most beat 'em ups. I need to branch out though because I keep wanting to replay them even though there's tons of other games out there.

Star Fox 64 is such a cool game, I don't even play much Nintendo games nowadays but still hold it in high regard, it's just great how stylized/charming the game is while never interfering with the action/brisk pace of the game.

Do you own a PS2? FZ Complete Collection is one of Sega's best compilations. The only thing not included are the Famicom / NES versions, but Complete Collection includes a new mode called "Neo Classic" that reproduces the look and feel of Sunsoft's Famicom port. Also included is a complete overhaul of FZ2 using System 16 hardware.

Lots of unlockables as well. I'd suggest digging up a cheats page, because I think a lot of things have to be unlocked through code inputs.
