3961098 No.3961098 [Reply] [Original]

I have recently rediscovered the Tomb Raider series and started playing the first game on Saturn. It's the first time as an adult that I get to play a Lara-Croft game. As a 12 or 13-year-old teenager, I wasn't quite aware of anything else in the game except for Lara's quite feminine characteristics that, unfortunately, overrode any other thought-out concept the game offers. After getting over the hard time being a 90's teenager, living through the glorious digital revolution of the internet and becoming sensitized to female curves, I discovered more than just a pair of tits and naked tighs in the game. What popular media and video game platforms advertised back then in the 1990s, was a game for randy rams craving for naked skin, like a pixelated VHS porn that you paid a shit ton of money on in the 90s. On the contary, puzzles in the game are quite elaborate and I have found that I am having a hard time to find all the secrets. It's a perfect action-adventure that requests both brains and dexterity. All in all the game deserved the hype it had, but I'm afraid it would not have been quite as succesful, If you had replaced Lara Croft with an Indiana-Jones-like male character. I would have tried it anyway.

I'm sorry for my ignorance, while quite probably being the only one here that hasn't ever finished the game, and my subsequent audacity to post superfluous questions that I quite frankly hope will not remain unanswered or result in a shitstorm against the clueless.
>Is it actually worth ones while to look for all secrets, i.e. do you get a reward or something?
>Have you ever cared about the time you have taken to finish a level?
>Is it cheating when I reload the saved game, after being hit too hard by an adversary or objects that appear out of nowehere and just try the level again (no emulator/ no save-load state)?

Feel free to discuss any other retro Tomb-Raider game, as well.

Lara's sex appeal was a big part of the franchise. This was the era of the mascot and sony desperately needed one to compete with Sonic and Mario. Crash tried but never really did it, but Lara stood out because of the politics of the era.

Spice girls were the biggest band in the world. They were on every TV show and here's your GRIL POWAH female lead in tomb raider. It became a much easier marketing point that having interesting gameplay as Tomb Raider isn't interesting to normies. Frankly Tomb raiders gameplay is quite slow and boring more often than not, it's a 3D puzzle game more than an action game. Doesn't mean it's bad but it's not what you can sell the game to the public with.

Why would you pick Saturn? It's kind of a bad version. Still a very good game though.

>Is it actually worth ones while to look for all secrets, i.e. do you get a reward or something?
It's been years, but I don't think you get anything. Certainly nothing special. Only seek them all out if you really want to.

>Have you ever cared about the time you have taken to finish a level?
Not really. It's an exploration, puzzle game I was never trying to rush myself. Though I did find a shortcut that lets your skip almost an entire level and was pretty chuffed with myself back then.

>Is it cheating when I reload the saved game, after being hit too hard by an adversary or objects that appear out of nowehere and just try the level again (no emulator/ no save-load state)?

Technically no. If it helps you enjoy the game, do whatever you want.

Enjoy! Aside from a non-retro one I think the first TR is the best game in the series and one of my favorite games of the whole era.

I actually think Lara's design is one of the things that holds the game back. Just in that it gave the impression it might be a titillating easy game that appeals to pervs. When really it's a pretty serious puzzle game. If you play if for the sex appeal and a bit of action you'll be disappointed and if you wanted a real exploring puzzle game you might not have thought that's what Tomb Raider would be.

>Frankly Tomb raiders gameplay is quite slow and boring more often than not, it's a 3D puzzle game more than an action game

Very much. Especially in the first game it's really not an action game at all. It has some action to it, but it really is mostly exploring and puzzles. The sequels are a bit more action heavy though.

It was developed for both and the PS1 version is considered the default one due to it being where the game really took off.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about kiddo. Might want to take a look at lad culture and girl power of the 90s. Selling the game as a dungeon adventure would have made it flop. Selling it on Lara made it one of the most iconic games of all time.

FYI, this isn't even the developers' intention. They explicitly stated that they did not want Lara to be sexualized. But the marketers said fuck you and did it anyway. Then TR's progenitors could do nothing but weep as Core got restructured into a bureaucratic mess that was completely taken over by marketers, and basically did whatever the fuck they wanted with the Tomb Raider IP.

So yeah, it's not surprising that the game has considerably good level designs, since that was the exclusive focus of the development team. Lara's sexualized image is the fault of executive meddling.

Holy shit this thread is terrible. I don't even know where to begin. Tomb Raider was a brilliantly designed game for its time. Saturn and Playstation didn't have the raw polygon rendering power to make a fast 3D platformer like Mario 64 on and they were also trying to corner the adult gamer market so creating more atmospheric games requiring slower more cautious progress was exactly the thing to do. Tomb Raider + Resident Evil was the revolution. Jill and especially Lara were obviously sexualized to the same extent as Bond girls etc were but if the games weren't great too they wouldn't have been successful. Basically the only demographic that would have a negative reaction to a sexy female protagonist at the time were prepubescent boys. The third wave feminists had not yet come to have any effect on video gaming. Normal feminists at the time saw Lara as a strong female role model believe it or not. It's only a decade or more later the developers are forced to backpedal and make convoluted justifications for their simple, brilliant designs in the 90s. What a world.

There's a hidden level to unlock in 3, but you mainly want to just find as many as you can for the weapons, ammo and medipacks. Don't worry about getting them all on your blind run because you won't.

>Have you ever cared about the time you have taken to finish a level?
Only when speedrunning. Most of the time I enjoy replaying 1+2 at a relaxed pace even though I know them inside and out, and I have to go slow through 3+4+5 because I'm not as familiar with them.

>Is it cheating when I reload the saved game, after being hit too hard by an adversary or objects that appear out of nowehere and just try the level again (no emulator/ no save-load state)?
Fuck it, just play it your way. Don't fret about using medipacks though, seeing as there's plenty left around, and even the small ones refill half health.

Possibly, and honestly I think the reason Underworld didn't do so well is that they really went back to the series' roots to make it more of an environment puzzle game again but toned down the sex appeal.

Even still, I would have rather the game succeeded on it's real merits rather than having to be bolstered by the titillation. Not that I have anything against sexiness and boobs, I just like content better. I wish there were more people who wanted the actual kind of game it is.

I also agree that tomb raider was part of the girl power thing. Not like the spice girls, but in general as a role model to young women. Too bad mostly dudes played. I remember it getting a decent amount of marketing. But the marketing was all "look at this new Tomb Raider! Physics puzzles! Massive levels! Exploration! Isn't that what you want out of Tomb Raider?" Then just crickets.

And yeah, she's still sexy as fuck in game but it was mostly marketing that I was talking about. Focused less on Lara being sexy (though that model they hired was) and more on the game. The result is the game kind of flopped, but again I think that's because most gamers don't really want what Tomb Raider was going for. Tomb Raider is among my favorite series of all time and Underworld is beside the first one as my two favorites out of all of them.

I played the first two Uncharteds and half way through the third because a friend of mine is a huge fan and wanted to watch me go through them. I hated them more than almost any other game I've ever played. Outside of themes the two series have barely any similarities and are really in different genre. Posting this again.
Funny how the marketing got Tomb Raider wrong, until the developers themselves started changing the game to be more like what was marketed and more like the movies.

Tomb Raider was a methodical, slow exploration game with a modest ugly polygonal woman, not a blazing fast action game with some barely dressed 90's Image comics hot girl. There's nothing sexy about Tomb Raider, and Lara looked bad even for the time, when we had plenty of better looking 3D girls.

The movies also got Tomb Raider completely wrong. Actually playing Tomb Raider after hearing about it and watching the awful movies must had been a big letdown for some people.

Music from the games. Good, calm relaxing music.

Never cared about PAR time. When I was a dumb kid it could take me an hour or two to figure out a particular puzzle.

The first TR was the first full-3-D game in existence where you not only move left-right but also up and down in full dimension. It was brand new territory for the devs. And graphically it looked better than anything the competition (Nintendo) put out.

So you need to factor that in.

TODAY it's uglier than shit but back then it was a milestone title.

You can blame primitive code for that. Then again TR1 is not a difficult game compared to the later ones. It was released in an era where full 3D was extremely rare and gamers hadn't developed the proper "techniques" yet.

Compared to 2 though, the game is quite trivial, even the endgame foes can be reliably taken down with the pistols

Word. Lara is strong, fast, wealthy, and is extremely skilled and knowledgable.

All games show that she is extremely athletic, proficient with guns, vehicles, and first-aid. In addition to that, she states that she built the assault course in TR2 and 3, which means she is skilled in carpentry and construction. In TR4, she reads ancient plaques in Angkor Wat and Egypt showing proficiency in multiple languages, and she very well could've been speaking Tibetan to Brother Cheng in TR2 but was "dubbed" into English as the game had no subtitles.

That last part may seem odd, but remember that the alternative is two Italian guys beating up a Tibetan guy while speaking English.

>ugly polygonal woman

Dood, it was 1996. The period technology was pretty fucking limiting. The original, gen1 single core Pentium running at 100 Mhz was the absolute best available to consumers around that time, and the game engine had to render not just the actors, but an entire, vast 3D world with that alone. Trust me, the game was being plenty generous with its graphical detail under the conditions. Lara's 3D model has nothing to be ashamed of next to the original renders of such girls like Jill Valentine, Nina Willians and Sarah Bryant.

Also, in her hand drawn concept arts she looks much better. An athletic and strong bombshell. There's a good reason why she drove hormonal teenage geeks crazy at the time. In 1996 she was the pinnacle of video game queens.

Though I do admit that they later got the new character model for the Last Revelation and Chronicles horribly wrong, like some silicone porn star who was hooked on crank. But that was already when the series had gone full retard in every other way as well.

But my point stands: The original 1996 Lara was an excellent model for its time.

It was a fucking smash hit and part of that success was 100% down to Lara's sex appeal. It did not hold the game back. That's a ridiculous claim.

>Wow you're salty this morning.
That was my first post in this thread, you paranoid fuck.

I still think it's part of the reason the subsequent games took a more action focused rout to appeal to the people who were playing for Lara as opposed to those playing for Tomb Raiding. I think her being a sex symbol changed the demographic the games were going for. The first game is amazing and then the quality of level design and puzzles took a nose dive over casual action and better looking boobs.

And your first post today in this thread, but on on /vr/, obviously.

I don't think you can blame the shitty action heavy direction the sequels took on the sex appeal of Lara. I think you can definitely blame it on the franchise becoming massively popular though. And as I said, the sex appeal played a huge part in that, so I guess we kind of agree on that part. It was the combination of a great puzzle and exploration game with a very presentable and contemporary relevant main character that made the first game so successful. So again, I do not think it held the game back in any way but if you were to say that it is in part responsible for the sequels being ruined by trying to appeal to an even wider audience, I would agree.

I know I certainly wouldn't have enjoyed the game as much as I did if it had featured a male character though. There was something about being alone with Lara that made the game really special. I actually only finished the first one of the classic games. I played the second game until the venice level and decided this game wasn't for me. Never picked up another Tomb Raider game, I also hated all the new costumes. Fuck the sequels desu famalam.

I enjoyed the fuck out of Anniversary though.

Yeah that's pretty much what I'm getting at. It's not that I didn't like her character or design in itself. But it was definitely one of the things that brought the game massive appeal. And let's face it, the kind of game Tomb Raider was going for was never going to appeal to the masses. It's much more exploring and solving logic puzzles than the running around and shooting which has always been more popular.

As a side note, I think that's exactly why the reboot did so well. Tomb Raider had been limping along for a years at that point. Underworld is an incredible game, but it's more in line with the first one being more about puzzles than action. And though it has some fans, the game essentially flopped.

But then along came Uncharted, which I think is the game many people always wanted Tomb Raider to be. It has the feeling of going on an archeological adventure and solving ancient mysteries. But the "puzzles" are all laid out for you, you can't get lost because everywhere is a well disguised tight path and the bulk of the actual gameplay is just a 3rd person shooter.

Uncharted was instantly more popular than Tomb Raider had even been able to dream of for years. So they took that idea, re-inserted Lara and *poof* it's mega popular again.

I despise the Uncharted games more than almost any others I've ever played (favor for a friend is why I played them at all) and it makes me a little sad, but I do get why the series is so popular. I also can't really hold a grudge against the new Tomb Raider even if I think it looks like a pile of shit, I'm in the minority and their job is to make games that sell well and stay in business.

Aside from the quick time events I had a blast with Anniversary as well. TR1 is among my favorite games of all time.

It would require a lot of work. There's guy who's making tr2 remake and even he not sure when will he finish it. Indie studios make games with simple technical stuff for a reason.

A high res remake of TR2 wasn't what I was going for. That sounds pointless.

I mean a new game in the TR vein, could even have outdated or simple graphics if the puzzles and exploring were solid.
