I have played the original game through at least 50-60 times. My sister and I went through a period of trying to speed run it, and after we gave up we still get together a couple times a year and just beat the game in one sitting. Amazing shit.

My favorite world has to be Beast Makers, this is where the difficulty spikes imo and the level designs become fucking crazy. I don't think any subsequent games had a level that pissed me off more than Tree Tops.

1 is absolute horrid trash garbage and i despise it.
2 is probably one of my favourite games, just 100%'ed it a few days ago in 6 hours or so.

now playing 3 to 100% right after completing 2.
The overall story seems better and Bianca is cool.

But no animated intros/outros for levels ruins them for me in 3.

They were the best part and gave the levels in 2 soul and charm.

>Favourite game

Spyro 1 no contest. Bosses are too easy and the final world should've been much bigger, but it's miles above the other ones in terms of atmosphere.
The exploration and adventure aspects are at their peak and the gameplay is not interrupted by dubious minigames or cartoony NPCs like the sequels.
Every level has its own charm while also existing in a cohesive world. No out of place or overly cartoony stuff. It feels surprisingly subtle and almost mystical, thanks to the pastel colours, the gorgeous skyboxes and Copeland's work.

Spyro 2 still has part of first game's charm (especially the Homeworlds) but introduces too many characters and gets too colourful, straying away from the solitary adventure feeling of S1. Spyro 3 continues that process and strays further from Spyro's orginal spirit. Still fun games.

>Favourite track

Misty Bog, Dark Hollow, Toasty, Gnasty Gnorc, Dream Weavers Homeworld, Icy Cavern and a few others. But mostly Misty Bog.
The OSTs of 2 and 3 aren't as good, but a few themes still come to mind, like the homeworld themes in 2 and Spike's Arena.

>Favourite homeworld

Beast Makers, Dream Weavers and Autumn Plains. I wish Spyro 1 had something like AP's gigantic castle. Such a well designed structure. Midnight Mountain is cool too.

>Favourite portal

You mean the gates? I think the ones in Spyro 3 are the worst ones, because they didn't blend with the homeworld. S2 ones all look the same, right? I liked the ones in Spyro 1 because they blend well but still have their own identity, plus some of them take a mini-challenge to reach, like the maze leading to Dark Hollow. So, Spyro 1 I guess, though I don't think portals are vital.

OP you didn't ask about our

>Favourite level

Ice Cavern and Dark Passage master race, then Stone Hill, Alpine Ridge, Tree Tops, Misty Bog and Haunted Towers.

>Favourite boss

Toasty and Gnasty as characters. Ripto, Scorch and the Fireworks Factory dragons as fights.

in order so you can appreciate the improvements as the trilogy goes by. I played 1 and 3 years before playing 2 and that's now made it my least favourite because in my opinion, everything 2 does 3 does better, while 1 holds a specific charm not in the later games. the transitions between worlds for example. all three are lovely little platformers though.

there really is something about it. i love the transitions between levels in 1, i'm sad they weren't in 2 and 3.

>straying away from the solitary adventure feeling of S1.
you see i liked that. i felt like it shouldn't be just spyro against the gnorcs especially after he freed a load of big dragons. i get it though, they'd just get crystallized again spyro is small enough to avoid it but i felt so alone in 1, as much as i love it.

I'm ok with the empty feeling. The characters the other games added weren't bad, but some felt too cartoony and took away from the elegance of Spyro 1. I appreciate S2 and S3 for what they did but I prefer to see them and Spyro 1 as mostly separate.

>i like it too but it is literally just an introduction level to the game.

Sure it's simple but the little secrets here and there and there are fun and the level design is incredibly pretty. It was one of the first instances that made me realize how different Spyro 1 was from the other Spyro games.

>really? i think it's the weakest part of Spyro 3 and one of the most uninspired homeworlds. Probably THE least inspired homeworld of the trilogy.

Interesting. First time I hear someone dislking MM so much. Personally, I like it because it feels very different from the other three homeworlds, which look too similar to eachother (green grass, blue sky, castles with similar architecture, etc). Plus MM looks very surreal, like something straight out of Dream Weavers. Really, I wish we had more levels like that in the game.

So I'm playing through Spyro 3 rn and 100 % all of the first homeworld except the Sgt. Byrd part of one of the levels. Doing all that I never had the fairy give me the whole hacked game dialog but now in the second world I'm finding I'm missing gems in two levels, Icy Peak and the world you buy Sgt. Byrd in both missing what seems to be a single gem and I've scoured the levels a few times each. Am I dealing with a bad ROM? Icy Peaks is a tough level to complete. I always have to search the place top-to-bottom. iirc there's a somewhat hidden basket that you need to glide to reach. It should be around, but you gotta look.

Pretty sure Spyro 2 is the least unfinished of the 3. It might lack a Spring world but the story flows well: Autumn Plains is so fucking long that when you defeat its boss the game is self-aware enough to try to trick you into thinking Ripto might have been defeated. Only real evidence of it being rushed, aside from a fourth world missing, is that Winter Tundra is shorter and lacks Talismans.

Spyro 1 and 3 are a lot more rushed. Spyro 1 had an entire Dragon Realm cut and one reworked into a super short final World. Spyro 3? Ooooooh boy.

Yeah. The only mini-games I was fine with in Spyro 2-3 were the sub-bosses which were a pretty good idea. The others interrupt the gameplay and the adventure. Not to mention a lot of them have that cartoony feeling that doesnt fit Spyro 1's fairy tale tone.

In a way, Spyro 1 did have mini-games, or rather side quests. Secret or hard to pick gems like >>3970282, eggs, some super hard-to-find dragons. The difference is that they blended well with the levels and you had to find them yourself instead of the game outright telling you what to do. The worst offender is by far Year of the Dragon with the mini-games being inside little convenient portals. Letting kids figure stuff by themselves is bad!

Tried to play through YOTD next and it's just not very fun compared to the other two. All the minigame challenges are so hit and miss and they make up the majority of the game.

I made it to Sgt. Byrd's level before quitting. Weird that yotd used to be my favourite in the trilogy as a kid.

Because YoTD was tailor-made to market to what kids growing up in late 90s/early 00s like you and I thought was cool at the time, like skateboards, UFOs, laser guns and whatnot. Result is that YoTD aged the worst out of the trilogy while 1 and 2, which are more heavily in the fairy tale tone, feel timeless.

I disagree, Year of the Dragon is still the strongest of the three in my opinion. 2 is the weakest, every portal world feels disjointed, there are fewer homeworlds and none of them have enemies, it has the weakest story, no dragon eggs, enemies turn into points for power ups instead of gems which just seems like a waste of time.

Actually my favourite world of all 3 games is in 2 - Robotica Farms - but playing through most of the game i enter a world and think ''oh god i hate this place.'' i hate Hurricos, Aquaria Towers, Scorch, Fracture Hills, Magma Cone, Metropolis.
i hate that you have to pay to learn new skills, i hate the reuse of music, i hate how pointless the entire game feels considering Ripto is a total joke. You could argue that Gnasty Gnorc was too but he fucking froze all the dragons in crystal because he was pissed off, what did Ripto do?

oh no he kicked moneybags out of a castle one time and hung up some flags. also he doesn't like dragons. what a monster.

In terms of a beautiful inviting world, Spyro does it better than other video games.

See, I don't necessarily think of YOTD as the worst one. 1 is my favourite by far and then 2 and 3 are roughly on par. One's weakness is made up for by something it has above the other one.

First, I agree on the "Oh god I hate this place" realms. Many Spyro 2's realms are painfully generic (Idol Springs) or outright tacky (Robotica Farms). "Fun" fact, until you mentioned Aquaria Towers I forgot it existed, because in my mind it and Sunny Beach were the same realm.
Ripto is seriously overrated in the fandom. He falls short of Gnasty and the Sorceress as a menacing villain, feeling more like a bully than an evil overlord. I think his popularity has partly got to do with his boss battle, more on that below. Even Crush and Gulp are goofy brutes compared to the suprisingly creepy YOTD bosses.

What Spyro 2 does good, though, is actually pretty good. 3 homeworlds are too few, but they're beautiful and fun to explore (too bad Winter Tundra is smaller), and in my opinion superior to the first 3 YOTD homeworlds. I find YOTD has a lot of generic and tacky stuff as well (like the stuff I mentioned in >>3981478) on top of obviously unfinished or rushed parts. YOTD leans too much on referecing Earth civilizations instead of building a fantasy world separate from ours like 1 and 2 did, resulting in some of the trilogy's worst realms.
Finally, strictly from a gameplay point of view, Ripto is a better final boss than the Sorceress, who always felt just a little underwhelming to me. YOTD clearly shows a lot of ambition and build up as the final Spyro chapter: 5 extra playable characters, super evil villains and more. But the many problems it suffered due to time constraints prevented it from being the ultimate Spyro game it could've been.

tl,dr: Some things in 3 are better than 2, some things in 2 are better than 3. Both have terrible stuff but on the overall both are pretty good.

exactly this.
>What Spyro 2 does good, though, is actually pretty good.
yeah i do agree with that. I still prefer YOTD homeworlds i adore evening lake small as it is for example. but yes the boss fights are the most enjoyable to me in all three games (aside from toasty in 1). autumn plains is a truly gorgeous homeworld and i love the hidden orbs in each world - like in winter tundra having to fly over to the waterfall, took me ages to figure out.

i love the song "toasty" from the first game, when you are in the first boss level. just that drum fill into the JAM gets me hype. two little snare hits. BAM in your face rock jam.

autumn plains is the best homeworld. ever. so comy. spent like an hour swimming in that pool by the lava level.

2 just had the best mini games, the flying sheep saucer shoot down in the robot world in 2 was soooooooo fun! and the hockey mini game in the ooga booga level...yooooooooo

>> No.3994525

I think Spyro is the only playstation trilogy where I find all games equally enjoyable.

I love both Crash 1 and 2, but 3's gimmick stages are truly horrible. I like R&C 2, but 1 is hard to go back to and I find 3 has a lack of good variety. Jak 1 and 3 is really fun, but 2 really needs me to be in a masochistic mood to enjoy it. And I never really got into sly cooper.

Spyro on the other hand, 1 is just a fun exploration game, 2 is more of that and then some interesting objectives added in, and 3 is all of the above only with full fledged gimmick stages that are actually fun (unlike fucking crash 3).

Just about the only thing I dislike about Spyro is the forced backtracking stuff in 2 and 3, with having to come back to levels later with abilities you can't get yet. In adventure games like this I absolutely always prefer to get everything done in one go and having to come back for usually just one thing is annoying as hell. At least Spyro 3 isn't as bad since if you're savvy enough then you can glitch into literally every alt character portal that's present before you can unlock said characters, but then there's the bit in evening lake where the game just decides you can't to hunter missions anymore until you finish the world because fuck you, and it's really just annoying.

If this were over a year ago, I'd agree, but times are a changing, for two reasons.
1. The N-Sane trilogy became a thing, and if it sells well, it'll prove that tapping into late-90s PS1 nostalgia sells. Do you really think Activision would ignore such a blatant money cache? (Again, this depends on whether or not the Crash trilogy sells.)
2. Apparently (don't quote me on this) the previous Skylanders game flopped, and this'll be the first year they don't release an annual instalment. I'm absolutely sure it's been on the decline with every passing game. It doesn't "print money", at least.

I have very fond memories of this series. As a kid, I liked Spryo 2 best, and it's still the one I replay most primarily because doing challenge runs with the double-jump glitch is pretty fun, but I can't deny that Spyro 1 holds up the best as designed. It's part of a handful of early 3D games that feel incredibly unique; there really aren't any games with the level design or atmosphere of Spyro 1.

Levels like Ice Caverns or Dark Passage have looping alternate routes that feed into each other, and almost EVERY level in the game uses vertical space in a way that most 3D platformers of the time just didn't even try to. Each level had fleshed out side routes that either created interesting spatial puzzles to hidden treasure or created convenient shortcuts back to earlier sections of the game. Every level feels like it has a distinct gameplay gimmick, despite the core controls being so simplistic.

If you'll forgive the overused comparison, it's the kind of vertical, looping level design that would later earn Dark Souls mountains of praise, since it's so very rarely done. Even the sequels basically only used verticality as a transition between flat, horizontal plains, which is probably why the team felt they couldn't do more with the character; they lost whatever originally inspired them to create these interesting, interlocking levels.

I'm conflicted on whether that would even be a good thing or not. On the one hand, a huge portion of Spyro's charm is its atmosphere, music, and color palettes, which the Crash remake/remaster shows that even a team with good intentions will probably mess up. On the other hand, the Crash remakes use the original level geometry almost 1:1 and I think that's the other big draw of at least the original Spyro. So it'd be a neat novelty, but I doubt they'd end up being the definitive versions of those games in any capacity.

I may be wrong, but I believe there is lava in the tunnel where you chase the Thief in the plane. Even if not, there's definitely drownable water in gnasty's home world, so it's easy enough to lose sparx there before entering the level.

There's lava and water you could fall into, if you're awful. I'm assuming the guy making the gif did so on purpose to make sure Sparx didn't pick any up, since he wanted to show all of the gems.

I like the marsh and temple levels, but robotica farms and metropolis are kind of short and don't really have anything to do in them besides just get to the end, compared to how full of content other levels are.

I think Spyro 2 levels are really weak in general. I enjoyed most levels in 1 and 3, but whenever I think of Spyro 2 levels it's stuff like Fracture Hills, Zephyr, and Robotica Farms. They're all pretty bland or tacky. I think Skelos Badlands and Mystic Marsh are the only levels I really enjoyed in the game aside from racing/flying levels, which were consistently great across the entire series imo.

The homeworlds are really nice, especially Winter Tundra, but I don't like how dead they feel.

>> No.4006565

I actually enjoyed that. Gave some contrast between the hubs and actual levels

>> No.4008930

2 was the only one I played as a kid so I'm biased against it, but it's still my favorite. I recognize 1 as the better game overall, the concise platforming and magical lonely feel throughout the game is truly unique and superb. 2's homeworlds make it for me though, someone else mentioned how the ambient empty feel to them gave a really nice medium with which to present the levels you travel to. Some of the levels are on par with ones as well if you go into it with the right mood, like Aquaria Towers and Hurricos (my favorite level in any game.) The missions were pretty decent usually as well, aside from the handful that change the major control scheme. I think of 2 as a decent sequel in that it expands on the original idea with new ideas while only losing a bit of the originals charm.

And then 3 comes along and turns into a Saturday morning cartoon, complete with obnoxious side characters (that control horrendously at times) and a gratuitous lack of subtlety. And it still manages to be a great game that I'd consider replaying, if only after the other 2.

And now I'm going to go slit my wrists because I remembered how my one fucking hipster BITCH of an ex-girlfriend stole my PS1 and all three Spyro games when we broke up, all painstakenly collected from thrift stores over several years, and proceeded to move to the other side of the country.

shelia's levels are fine, sgt byrd, yes i totally get how people don't like those levels, awkward controls/camera combo, the music, he's my least favourite. i always have to double back with him because i missed something.

bentley - it's cumbersome but i like the change of pace, having power over agility. agent 9 is pretty fun to me, shooting lazers and having to search for floating balloon/out of reach gems, much more fun than sgt byrd atleast.

I am. The homeworld shows that the people behind this have a good grasp of what makes Sypro great, ie the huge spaces to wander around, the secrets you stumble upon, the fairy tale feel, etc.
Shame it's based on Spyro 2 because that means more sidequests and annoying NPCs. But that also means the boss should be a good fight.

fracture hills is a top 5 spyro level imo

many levels in the second game feel very simply structured and straightforward compared to the sprawling organicness of the first game, but fracture hills manages to feel totally unique. the contrast between the upper grassy area and the lower lava area full of hard to kill enemies is some of the best level design in the series.

the backtracking for the alchemist and the bagpipes are slightly annoying, but there's also an awesome supercharge route and skillpoint

>> No.4025180 [DELETED]

>>4024942

I think the same. The first one is my favorite by far, but it is the one that suffered the technological limitations of its time the most. Same for Spyro 1. The bosses aren't bosses, Spyro can't swim or climb, and other stuff. On the other hand there's not really much to improve in 2 and 3 aside from updated graphics, unless they intend to add cut content.
See N. Sane Trilogy. Crash 1 was severly outdated and needed major updates whereas Crash 2 and 3 are receiving new graphics and little more.

That said, part of me is curious to see remakes that do something more than just a few updates. Spyro worlds are so vast there's a lot more you could do compared to Crash.
