Could do with a bit of help.

I was playing Dragon Quest 6 (DS) last year but had to put it down for work reasons.
I've picked it up again, but haven't got a clue where I'm meant to be going. My most recent save is in the desert town of Aridea. All my characters are in the low 20's, except Amos who is 18, so I suspect I only recently recruited him.
I don't have the white haired boy, but I remember doing a quest that involves him and a dragon

Go to Port Haven(where you found Milly) and speak to Madame Luca with the crystal ball. She'll tell you where to go. Also use Party Chat.

It was mostly innocuous comments about the town. The horse had more to say

Well that wasn't too useful

There was a forced scene where I get fed and rest, then says this

"But you must be careful... The crystal has revealed horrors to Madame Luca. People are dying in their sleep!
Sometimes, Luca sees a monster... Yes, one monster, lingering in the shadow of this illness.
Rekku, you must be on your guard...
This monster and you shall meet someday. Madame Luca knows this."

So I tried sleeping at a few different inns, but nothing so far. Any idea how I can find this monster?

When you level up in dragon quest 6, does your current vocation effect stat gains like in III?

Like being able to level up a few times as thief then use the speed from that with a sage

Yes also you gain nothing while you're still jobless.

No, all stats are a static gain and vocations give a static change
