Is Mega Man X the first and also the only /vr/-compliant gritty reboot?

Post interesting reinventions or U-turns of game series before it became common practice

As a game and concept, it's a re-imagining. It's Megaman recreated for the 90's.

Who cares about the timeline? It means nothing outside the game. We're not preteens to care for the cringeworthy anime characters and plot.
