Post your quick/one-off questions here.

-

Is it worth getting a 32X and/or Sega CD, or should I just cut the shit and emulate their games? I already have a Genesis, and I wouldn't mind getting the add-ons for the shits and giggles.

I would say depending on price. I just bought a Sega model 2 and a CD for under $80. Waiting for a good sub $50 price to get a Sega 32x. There are only about 40 games for the system so it may not be worth it.

The CD is nice because you can burn games. I also have a Everdrive which is nice for Master System games.

Question for fellow piratefags, Is a modded ps2 the best way to play both burned ps2 and psx games? I've been going back and forth between buying a modded psOne and later on getting a ps2, but if I can play both consoles on only one machine then I'll just settle with a ps2 with either softmod or a modchip on it. I want the best psx compatibility, else I'll just get both consoles.

How well does Harvest Moon 64 emulate? If it emulates fine then I'm not gonna buy it in my final buying spree of N64 games. I have almost every game I want and I plan on going on one last buying spree and calling it good. I already eliminated a few spendier games like Castlevania Legacy of Darkness and Ogre Battle 64 and Pokemon Stadium 2 because they seem to emulate fine and I see no reason to spend a shitton of money on these games if I can get the same deal on an emulator and they don't hold any sentimental value to me unlike the main games I want on the list. If I can knock Harvest Moon 64 off the list because it emulates well that saves me another $50

I think it's on the Wii U VC, so if that counts as "emulating well", then you're fine.

Multiple images are available for some games, such as
Sega Bass Fishing (US) 4S
Sega Bass Fishing (US) 12S
and
World Series Baseball 2K1 (US) 3S
World Series Baseball 2K1 (US) 5S

What does S number mean?

Does this not damage the cd reader somehow? I ask because I heard some kinda hubbub about that on forums

I'm hella retarded on hardware I don't if that's real or not

>> No.3946245

>>3944728
Depends on whether you want to have the real thing or you are just interested in the games. If it is just the games you want, emulation is way better.

>>3945193
I have a modded PS2, runs burned games well, but never could make it run a PSX disc... At least, not without incident, so better safe than sorry.

By the way, have you considered an un-modded PS2 slim? You can easily hack it to boot games from an USB drive, I hear.

>> No.3946276

>>3946082
Turning on electronics will damage them due to electromigration, in fact they get damaged from existing due to the electrolytic caps drying up (or worse, leaking out).

Worrying about whether burned cds damage the cd reader is like worrying whether the food you eat causes cancer.

>> No.3946304

>>3946082
I have no idea about Sega, but here is my experience with PS1 burning:

Old CD games were burned at very low speed. Nowadays no burner works at such speeds, not even close, so unless you hit gold and find a working burner from say, 2001, you won't be able to make the console read it, in fact you could even damage it.

>> No.3946312

>>3946304
PS1 is more sensitive to read errors since it uses the mode 2 format. Sega CD and Saturn both use mode 1 which has extra error correction.

>Old CD games were burned at very low speed.
Professionally made discs are PRESSED, not burned.

Again with the burn-at-lowest-possible-speed meme. How many times to do I have to explain this shit? The whole rule about burning at lowest possible speed comes from the early 2000's, when it was possible for your CD burner to put the data on the disc faster than it could load data into it's buffer. This lead to buffer underruns, and resulted in bad discs. These days it's no longer a concern, as you'll have a hard time draining the buffer empty unless you are using an IDE drive. Thus rather than deal with legions of people saying "This rip is bad, didn't burn right" since they are too stupid to figure out they are breaking their own burns, most places just said "Burn at 1X or as close to as possible".

Last three PSX games I've burned were burnt at 52x, and all three work flawlessly on my 75xx. Stop posting bullshit.

And what do they use to press it, the power of imagination? Hopeful thinking?
They use a pre-recorded MASTER, you twit. Or rather, an inverse copy of a master disc.

It's in limbo. The two screen gimmick doesn't feel retro, but it sure isn't modern. Have you played a DS lately?

I guess if virtual reality kicks off then older gimmicks might feel retro in comparison.

How do you guys handle your RF cables for multiple systems? I currently have them daisy-chained with the standard switchboxes. But it's not the most attractive setup. Annoyingly it's seems the standard for switchboxes is the 2 in 1 out setup. Keep in mind I'd prefer not to mod my systems.

>>3945193
Like the other anon said. I ran into a similar issue where PS1 games didn't want to play on my PS2 slim. Sometimes they'd load but only after several tries. I'd try the PS2 first and see if that works for you. If not then a PS1 is dirt cheap.

I've been wracking my brain trying to remember this one PC game from the 90's, and I really hope somebody here can help.
What I remember is that it was educational, and the main character who guided you around was a little green frog looking alien who floated around in a flying saucer. The main menu was the cockpit of a ship or something with all sorts of random interactive bits, and I think the main window was looking out onto earth wildlife? I distinctly remember the theme being about nature and biology, I think featuring different biomes and whatnot? I can't remember much else about it, other than I played it a lot when I was younger but never learned the name.

My memory could be betraying me, but I think the alien fellow looked like this.

Made a thread a while ago asking about hooking a famicom to a US HDTV. As cool as they look I've given up on it, instead just buying a rasberry pi. Anything I should do though to get the aesthetic of a famcom? Pairing this case

With this. I only found one famicom rasberry pi case that I would need to 3D print myself, which I can't do. Found a famicom skin on redbubble for this case but it'd probably look like shit

https://www.redbubble.com/people/choccyhobnob/works/25466264-nintendo-famicom-skin-for-the-official-case?p=sticker

Only other thing short of ruining a famicom and putting the rasberry pi inside of it, would be to paint the case or something, though not sure what i would do.

Anyone have a good way of storing PS1 games and jewel case CDs in general?

>> No.3949261

>>3949259
You can find CD towers pretty easily for good prices at secondhand stores. I've even seen some sturdy napkin holders that would make good CD cases as well.

There's also these little stackable black crate things that are pretty affordable and can hold a good amount of CDs. Since they're modular they offer a lot more flexibility, and they're pretty sturdy. I've had mine for probably close to 8 years and even used them as the base to a TV stand (a long wooden plank, rather) with no problems. You can easily find them at any office supply store or just places that carry office supplies. I think I got mine in a Giant grocery store in VA.

Always store the disc standing. Never lay it flat.

Avoid/minimize humidity and drastic temperature changes.

If you live in a humid area, invest in a dehumidifier. If you live in especially hot/cold areas, consider regulating the temperature of the room where your games are stored.

Is there a point of diminishing returns with CPUs as far as Dolphin is concerned? Their site recommends an i7-4700MQ as being as good as it gets on a laptop but I don't know if the page is old and I'd do better with a newer unit or if that's really all I'll need.

I asked over in /vg/ but got no response.
