Hardest rpgs?

What are the hardest rpgs you guys have played? Preferably games that are difficult due to their puzzles or decisions in combat, not just boring grindfests.

Action or turnbased, Western or Japanese, doesn't matter, just looking for some good hard rpgs.

I really like the concept that game but it's way too tough even for wizardry standards. Were the ports easier?

Both the PCE port and the arrange mode on the PS1 have features to make things easier like non-random summons and being able to issue commands.

Chaos Strikes Back is hard as hell.

I can't wait for someone to translate the arrange mode for the PS1 versions of 4 and 5.

File: 1.07 MB, 1200x1200, Throb of the Demon's Heart is actually an unrelated spin-off and not a version of Wizardry IV, the rest of the post is 100% accurate though.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]

Speaking of, are there any fan translations for any of the Japanese-only Wizardry games? Would like to give them a go since I enjoyed KMT and the like.

Japan fucking adores Wizardry.

I think the hardest I actually beat is Wizardry V.
Facing three mirror matches before the last boss with no practical way to rest in between was a tough nut to crack. The game also relies less on bad luck instant death encounters than its predecessors.

It's pretty much a bonus in Wiz 3. You don't even get to select it directly from the start menu.
Note that the PCE Wizardry don't have the English options from the other Japanese Wizardry ports.

Yeah, but there are no walkthroughs or maps for most of them. It kind of feels like being on the frontier

I take it we're not including roguelikes, then? NetHack, SLASH'EM are pretty insane to me. They have all the features of an old western RPG except (a) more simiplistic (b) barely any or just comedic story and (c) permadeath

If we're not including roguelikes, Early Fire Emblem, Shin Megami Tensei or Advance Wars games probably fit this description. Obviously an RPG can be difficult via requiring grinding like the first Dragon Quest but strategy RPGs seem more legitimate imo as dying in Etrian Odyssey is your own damn fault.

There are Japanese guides. I used one when I couldn't figure out how to get the bomb in Gaiden 1. You have to combine a watch with a treasure chest.

Wizardry 4 also to this day imho has the best twist of a game EVER with that complete nowhere turnaround which ironically after biting yourself through these incredible hard floors puts you right back where you started and then with all those multiple endings, then three extremely overlookable ridiculously hard to get "real" endings with the swords- which again are just a masquerade to the REAL REAL ending...

So let me ask you /vr/
Have you forgotten something?
