What are some good 2d platformers with controls that feel really good, besides the obvious (Mario, DKC, Sonic, etc.)?

Preferably something with a good number of secrets. Pic related is still my favorite platformer of all time, and I'm looking for something to challenge it.

How about you drop some facts and not just shit from your ass. Megaman X games have tight controls and its what makes the games great.
