Let's have a gameboy color thread. What are you favorite gbc games? Did you have one as a kid? Were your friends jealous because they only had a shitty greenscreen gameboy? Pic related, I bought it at the midst of the pokemon hype.

I bought that same pikachu Game Boy from a friend at some point. I only had two actual Color games, one was Pokemon Silver, the other was Monkey Puncher. I played both of them on my Game Boy Pocket ages before I got the GBC though.

>> No.394191

The only bummer about the gameboy color is that it doesn't have backlight. Good thing you can play gameboy games on a GBA.

>> No.394184

I remember when I was a kid, I was living with my cousin for a few years because my family was dirt poor. He got a Gameboy Color with Pokemon Blue, and we played the SHIT out of it. However, all I had was a big brick Gameboy with a failing screen, so I always just borrowed the GBC.

Well, one day I decided I needed to upgrade, so I saved up money and told my mom to take me to the store to buy a new Gameboy. Sadly, the GBC was $20 more expensive than what I had, but I could afford a Pocket. My mom offered to make up the difference, but I guess out of a sense of honor, I declined and settled for the Pocket.

It wasn't a bad handheld by any means, but thinking about it, I really should have sprung for the Color. I actually jumped from the Pocket to an Advance later on, but I always felt like I skipped an essential step.

Well, I rectified that yesterday at last. Got myself a purple GBC with a pristine screen from a flea market, and played through Super Mario Land on it. Feels good man.

>> No.394214

>>394184
Oh, and I had never played through Super Mario Land either. I actually grew up with the sequel, but never had the original. I also got that game yesterday, and beat it in one sitting. It was short and kinda easy, but whatever, I feel like I'm slowly making up for things I never got to use or play as a kid.

Not my picture, but my dad gave me this one for Easter a long time ago. I have a GBA which I guess is superior, but I usually end up playing the GBC. I guess for sentimental reasons, I don't know. The start button takes a bit of effort to press, but otherwise it works perfectly and has survived drops and spills.

When I see used GBCs for sale they are almost always missing the battery-case lid, or whatever that's called. Why is that?

>> No.394268

>>394184
I never really understood why Nintendo released some games as gbc exclusives. Sure it got people buying a gbc, but they missed out on a lot of potential customers who could only afford a gameboy/pocket. I imagine the sales of oracle of ages/seasons would have been alot higher if they released two versions of both like they did with pokemon gsc.

>> No.394280

Me and my older brother got ours along with Pokemon. He got Gold, I got Silver. We always traded and battled each other, though the most fun we had was mystery gifting. I remember when he traded me a Dragonite, because I didn't have the patience to train one at the time.

Atomic Purple Faggot here.

Outside of Pokemon Gold, the game I have the most hours logged in is Donkey Kong GBC.

Honestly it's a lot better than you would expect given the fact it's just the SNES game on a less viable system. The platforming and QTEs are more challenging due to the smaller viewport and some of the music is actually better, particularly Millstone Mayhem and Tree Top Town. It's like DKC SNES is a dumbed-down HD Remake of DKC GBC that slightly missed the point, although it's preposterous to suggest that was the chronology.

Still, the similarities with Donkey Kong Land are unfortunate and rather obvious (some of the music and sound-effects are recycled, as well as a few very welcome graphics from DK64). Funky Fishing was awesome regardless.

If you plan to replay the game with added challenge I suggest the GBC port.

I honestly didn't know anyone with an older model of Gameboy back then. Also, everyone had Pokemon R/B/Y.

I managed to complete my Pokedex back then (I only cheated for Mew and got him at level 2 to 100 with no rare candies so its about as legit as possible given the circumstances) and it took me about 65 hours. Unfortunately, the save file was lost around 5 years ago.

Just dug up this old buddy of mine. Gotta say, for something that I played the shit out of as a kid, it is not that bad in terms of condition. A bit scuffed around the edges but okay.

2 questions though:

1. The speaker is very very weak, probably just from age. Is there anyway to replace it?

2. Is there anyway to replace the housing/shell or glass of the unit without buying another pokemon one (since theyre about $50+) Do you think it can be restored with stuff like gentle sanding of the scuffs?

I've always had a certain affinity for handhelds, especially Gameboys. Probably because they were such a big part of my childhood.

This is my collection as it stands now. This is not including DS', DSI's, my 3ds etc etc. Only the Gameboy namesake handhelds. I had quite a few more than this, but my house flooded a few years ago and I lost a good chunk of my vidya game collection. This was one of y favorite gameboy color games. An awesome little RPG with a unique battle mechanic.

That would be retarded.

Anyway, Radio Shack sells speakers that fit in the original Gameboy, if you trim off some of the excess plastic rim around the top of the speaker cone. Smaller speakers can no doubt be acquired online for pennies. Just measure the part you need, get the right impedance value, and you're golden grahams.

Red switch is probably variable speed or back light controls. Also looks like it has a 1/8 audio jack.

That explains why I have bags full of Pokemon minifigs. I got most of them from 25 cent machines at the supermarket though.

They're from the Nendoroid line. They were a limited run, I'd suggest trying mandrake.co.jp for them.
