Here my SNES JRPG backlog. What should I prioritise? What shouldn't I bother with?

>> No.3938248

Skip everything except Terranigma.

>> No.3938261

Those are all good, I'd say prioritize terranigma and lufia 2. Dqv, tales and star ocean all have remakes. Dq5 is fine on snes but the ds one really makes it shine. And tales for PSX is infinitely better. Star ocean I'd say play SNES personally.

>prioritise
Evermore, Terranigma and Lufia 2.
FF V and Star Ocean aren't bad but play those other 3 first.
>What shouldn't I bother with?
BOF2 - very mediocre game with rubbish writing, the re-translation patch doesn't make it much better.
DQV - Good but play the PS2 version instead
Phantasia - Play the PS1 version instead

Reminder that if you're going to play Terranigma be sure to apply the NTSC patch

The translation is terrible.

Prioritize Terranigma as it's the shortest game out of those, and also the fastest to play since it's an action RPG.

If you crave more action gameplay go with Evermore, or skip it and transition into RPG gameplay with Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia.

Then it's up to you. Do you like great gameplay and can stomach increasingly stupid stories? Go with Final Fantasy V or Lufia II. Do you like good stories (or at least stories with more than three seconds of planning put into them) with plenty of twists and wish to go with an almost purely traditional gameplay? Go with Breath of Fire 2 or Dragon Quest V.

Also, you better be playing the Breath of Fire 2 retranslation, if nothing else for the ability to dash.

FFV first, Terranigma second, do whatever you want past that EXCEPT skip SO and ToP and play their remakes. Both of them are shit due to insane encounter rates with incredibly shitty balance.

The story in Final Fantasy 5 isn't even marginally worse than Breath Of Fire 2.

Seems pretty decisive, I'll start with Terranigma. Thanks

I like my JRPG's to feel dramatic and epic, so I get the feeling FFV might not be for me

You're missing out the best Final Fantasy combat in the series, FF5 has plenty of epic moments, nigga. Just listen to this song.

I hate that these threads devolve into bashing FF5 for not having a stupid shonen story.

>> No.3938312

Who the fuck even cares about story in videogames? They're all horrible anyway.

>> No.3938314

Terranigma really falls apart when you get to the end of the human era and the Beruga arc begins.

>> No.3938381

When did Terranigger become so overrated? Barely anyone even talked about it years ago.

It's literally one fucking autismo constantly talking it up every fucking chance he gets, even ahead of other Quintet games.

OP, I'd say skip Terranigma and Lufia II, and play Star Ocean directly after Tales of Phantasia (trust me on this, k?).

As for what to play first....I mean, it's tempting just to blat out "Tales of Phantasia!", but that'd be letting my bias do you a JRPG disservice; Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean are flawed masterpieces or diamonds in the rough, and you have several others there that could be considered more "ol' reliable". I'd say start with either Dragon Quest V or Final Fantasy V, depending on whether you value gameplay or story more in your RPGs.

Whatever you do, do not listen to these dumb niggers. Terranigma is a waste of your time and even >>3938314 's assessment of it is charitable (something can't fall apart when it was barely holding together to begin with).

While FF5 is pretty tongue-in-cheek it has plenty intense moments like the other guy said. You should give each of those games at least 10 hours.

Breath of Fire II with re-translation patch is the best out of these if you don't mind a bit outdated gameplay.

the rest are ok

My picks are Terranigma, then FFV and DQV

DQV does have some ports/remakes you might want to check out instead though.

Don't bother with the rest. Lufia is mediocre, tales and star ocean are unbalanced as fuck, and BoF didn't get good until III.

SO and ToP have severe issues on the SNES. I was getting attacked what felt like every 2 steps in the final dungeon in SO -with the anti-encounter shit on- and Dhaos' castle in ToP, and to top it all off the enemies had padded HP and did insane damage to make it even more tedious. It's not even strategically engaging.

Tales of Phantasia is best experienced on the PSX. Couldn't say regarding Star Ocean.

Most of those games have better versions in other platforms, imo.
