Tetris has a really bumpy legal history. Tengen Tetris is an unlicensed game, as are all Tengen games. Regardless, it was ruled not illegal to sell Tengen games. However, Tengen published their version of Tetris without securing the rights in the US, which Nintendo did instead. That didn't stop some copies being sold before many were pulled from the shelves. They are somewhat rare, but not impossible to find, which is a shame, because it's the superior NES version. Nintendo's kinda sucks.

My favorite Tetris (and Puzzle games in general) renditions are the ones that nail the normal game perfectly and then have a bunch of other fun modes.

DS is the best one I own like this, but I'm sure there's plenty of others.

Classic GB tetris is best for /pure/ tetris. My personal favourite is Puyo Puyo Tetris.
