Okay motherfuckers I just got a Sega Saturn (NTSC-J) and I need to know the basics. What are some great games and essential accessories.

Sell it. You obviously can't afford to collect for it, nor do you even know what it is or you wouldn't be here asking this stupid question.

Get a backup cartridge if you don't want the internal memory to unexpectedly lose all your data.

RAM expansion: only a very few number of games explicitly require it, and depending on the kinds of games you want to play on your Saturn you may not even get any real benefit from it.

The Action Replay Plus is popular because it combines both of those functions, allows you to play games from different regions, and its firmware (along with other less feature-laden boot carts but NOT regular memory backups or ram expansion carts) can be flashed to let you play burnt games. You can also play burnt games using a simple swap trick.

As for games, that depends largely on what kinds of games you like and whether you know Japanese or not.

Every serious Saturn owner has a Pri-Fun, a color printer that connects to the Saturn and allows you to make real prints of images displayed by the system.

I can give you recommendation but seriously if you just grabbed a loose naked Saturn and expect it to be a PS1 wanabe you got it wrong.

The system is niche AF. If you don't know shit about it and aren't loaded You are 12 years late to begin a real collection.

And nearly all of those games are AES or CPS2 ports with no extra features.

Kidou Senshi Gundam. It's literally just called Mobile Suit Gundam. The first person gundam games are called mobile suit gundam side story.
Then Mobile Suit Z Gundam those 2 games play like Mobile Suit Gundam as in they are sidescrolling action games too

Bumping this thread with hope for help regarding my old OG Saturn and getting it up and running again - I think I have some starting stuff down here, like controllers, two Stunners, a reasonable collection of maybe 15 games, but really I'd just like the thing to be as playable as possible in my classic gaming room.

It's been collecting dust. Is there a good starting point for me to track down a backup cartridge/RAM cart, and to learn how to play burned games? Authenticity is less important to me than playability in this case.

/v/ had no clue what the fuck they were talking about while making this list and probably just listed games they played at the arcade or on the PS1 without actually knowing the quality of the Saturn port.

Mind you, that is 8 or so years old, so well before the /vr/ split.

As for Daytona, if you're putting it up against CCE, I prefer the original; Not a fan of the handling changes in moving it to the new engine (Sega Rally, right?)

original Daytona has the best handling cards. They completely fucked that up in the re-release.

Duke 3d is an awesome port and has bonus levels + Death Tank Zwei.

Powerslave is so good, you have to list it twice.

Loaded is fun, what's wrong with it?

Not enough.

I suggest to add the Jap version as well, pic related, called Seireki 1999: Pharaoh no Fukkatsu.

Spoiler: all 3 regional versions have small differences anyway, if you're a fan of the game like I am, all 3 are worth playing. But I'm autistic about this game.

Compared to the NTSC-U version, you have more ammo for the Amun Bomb (hand grenade) and Cobra staff weapons.
Considering both can be used to perform bigger jumps and to sequence break, it can be useful.
Also the voices are in Jap.

The PAL version is the one with the most differences. It doesn't have the extra ammo of the NTSC-J version despite being released later. It's optimized to run at the intended speed in 50hz, but there are some timing differences: the firing rate of the pistol and M-60 are lower, and the shots of the Mummy enemies are faster. Also there are a lot less HP/AMMO refill items to be found in levels, one level has a small extra area, and there are 2 new glitches exclusive to that version (the underwater mines make the kamel sound, and the kamel at the entrance of level Canyon of Chaos is tagged as an exit Kamel meaning you can skip the entire level).
So the PAL version is the fastest, that's what I used for my speedrun, but it's also the hardest

>> No.3936739

>>3936714
You sure the PAL version is optimized? I forced mine into 60hz and it feels more like the correct speed than the 50hz mode.

I haven't played the NTSC version, just speaking from gut feeling here.

>> No.3936832

>>3936739
I've done some tests playing the two versions side by side, running speed and most things are the same. That I noticed only firing rate of two weapons and a couple projectile speed were different.

Here is my speedrun of the PAL version done in 25mins

>> No.3936979

>>3936832
Is it possible that the optimization is tied to the framerate rather than the game's version?

Like, if you switch the PAL version to 60hz it still runs normally? All I remember being messed up was Pharaoh's voice
