>Put a dreamcast away in storage ~10 years ago
>Bought it when it was new, played it pretty frequently up until I put it away
>Put the console along with my controllers and games in a plastic, sealed container in my closet where it is completely dark and no sun/extreme temperatures in any way could affect it
>Decide to pull it out
>Open the container
>Immense metallic scent fills the whole room, I have to open the window and reseal the container

What do you guys think happened? Has this ever happened to you guys? Should I even risk plugging it in or will the shit set itself on fire?

I've never heard of anything like that before, but my only guess would be that a electrolytic cap spewed it's juice.

>>3931558

trying to think of what it could be...perhaps a metal in the system reacted with chemicals from the plastic of the container after being sealed for so many years?

regardless, i definitely would consider plugging it in outside to test first before powering it on indoors.

Those are capacitors. They can swell up and explode when not taken care of

They can be replaced, but if you don't know what capacitors are maybe you should take it to someone with more electronics experience rather than trying to fix it yourself.

BTW that's why hoarding is fucking pointless, because electronics last most when actually properly used.

Shit lying on shelf will just croak.

If you rip them off you'll tear out their solder pads with them and you really will need someone with skills to solder to traces

>>3931849
This is another very likely possibility that would be no big deal at all. I assumed OP only had the DC in there. If he had other electronics in there it's much more likely one of their batteries ruptured than a capacitor. Batteries smell more strongly and capacitors don't usually rupture when they're not energized

To respond to literally every other post, sorry I neglected to link my picture to the first anon but y'all being meta as fuck.

I thought capacitors only shoot their load when wired up the wrong way round?

>> No.3932908

>>3932864
Water from electrolyte in capacitors, especially shitty ones, slowly dissociates into H2 and O2. Hydrogen expands the capacitor and makes it pop eventually, while oxygen helps him by corroding the metal.

capacitors have some kind of oil inside of them that can bleed out.
it causes super-cancer too, so fun times.

>> No.3932935

>>3932908
The electrolytic fluid is supposed to be an oil, so I don't think caps are supposed to contain any water.

>>3932916
I don't think cancer is the main concern. When caps blow, they are likely to be overheated and could potentially spew boiling hot oil onto your skin, into your eyes, etc. if you are messing with them.

I doubt a typical cap is capable of hitting you with any more or hotter oil than you get snapped on you every time you fry bacon

>> No.3932973

>>3932962
Pan frying only shoots off tiny droplets of oil though, not big sticky globs of it. The oil probably isn't any hotter than bacon grease, but if a couple mLs gets squirted onto your face, it's going to deliver a thousand times as much heat energy into your skin than a teeny tiny droplet would.

This has nothing to do with anything, but deep frying related deaths in gore movies has always been one of the most horrifying things for me. My friends older brother was into some pretty extreme stuff, and years ago he managed to get one of the Guinea Pig movies I think? The plot was this girl learned to feel pain as pleasure and started deep frying herself. It gave me nightmares for weeks, and even now that kind of thing still creeps me out in movies. I recently watched the Toxic Avenger, and while it's pretty corny and tame by adult standards, the deep fryer scene still made me uncomfortable on a primal level.

You should be equally afraid of pressure cookers then. I had a pretty mild pressure cooker explosion happen when I was in the kitchen and I got superheated water sprayed onto my belly, just above the groin. The scald was pretty deep but the worst part was when the doctor had to clean it he had to scrape away the dead skin and whatnot with a rough pad. Fuck did that hurt. Plus lots of nurses got to see my dick and tell me how lucky I was that it wasn't scalded off.

If I had one of those new fangled computerized electric pressure cookers I'd put it on the porch. I only trust them if they have pic related sitting on a physical valve on top and even then I don't stand too close to them.

Honestly, I'm a patient person and at the current point in my life I have the time to use a crock pot. If I need it fast for some reason I know where to buy good quality precooked.

>> No.3933917

>>3933909
Funny thing is it was a good quality old fashioned pressure cooker with a weight exactly like that. It was being used as a very large pot to cook lobster though, and somebody had closed and turned the lid to the point that it sealed but not all the way.

>> No.3933937

>>3933917
Oh, well that's just boilover. Would have happened on any lidded pot. My old apartment had beans embedded into the ceiling over the stove from where I blew off the weight one time. They shot straight up out of the vent like a rocket.
