Redpill me on Ecco the Dolphin, /vr/.

Legitimately one of the most insane but absolutely brilliant games I've ever heard of.

>aliens
>time travel
>ancient beings as old as the ocean
>flying future dolphins

Where did this insanity come from?

Also if emulation isn't an option for me what's the best way to play?

Honestly. In the Sega CD version of Ecco the Dolphin there is a different music score and additional levels.

Here's a list of the changes made in Ecco CD...

>NEW LEVELS
>Open Ocean 2
>Volcanic Reef
>Ship Grave Sea
>The Sea of Silence
>Wreck Trap
>Deep Gate

>Ecco CD uses Redbook quality audio instead of the Mega Drive's sound processor for CD quality music.

>Ecco CD uses higher quality sound samples than the Mega Drive.

>Ecco CD uses Q-Sound technology, creating a surround sound effect from 2 speakers as opposed to the ordinary stereo sound of the Mega Drive.

>Passwords for Ecco CD are not compatible with Mega Drive Ecco.

>In the Library, two Glyphs feature FMV footage of dolphins. In the Mega Drive version, Glyphs were repeated.

>Trilobites and Sea Horses are easier to evade in Ecco CD than the Mega Drive game.

>In Ecco CD, when Ecco dies he returns to the last Barrier Glyph he removed.

>The 'A and Start' cheat for Ecco Mega Drive does not work on the Mega CD.

>Various Glitches and Bugs from the Mega Drive game are not present in Ecco CD

The first couple levels are really just learning the basics of how the controls work, if you can't get past them just switch to another game. It gets pretty hard as it goes on.

It was clear enough that I was supposed to combine dash and sonar, but All i did was sonaring after dashing. It didnt connect to sonar WHILE charging dash. I guess simple presentation by the dolphin telling you this would be enough to understand the timing on this move. Either that, or more forgiving timing to execute it. Or maybe Im just stupid.

I remember trying to look up HOW to do this jump and not getting much help.
Then, after failing for half an hour, I managed to make it and I died to medusae in the next jump without saving. Obviously I had to do it all again.
I think if I fired it up now, I could do it in about 5-10 minutes of trying.

Recently I heard there was a secret tunnel that bypasses those jumps?

Anyway, another problem I had was that I had no idea you can pick up blocs, boulders and other stuff from the seafloor. I understood that you could move/push them around, but had no knowledge of picking up mechanic until around the Atlantis, where its mandatory to progress. I ended up looking up the video walkthrough and was completely flabbergasted when I saw you can actually do that. Later I noticed that recorded demo playing if you dont press start shows it. Good on you! Honestly I think that jump is the hardest thing in the game just because the timing is so tight. The last time I looked around on youtube I couldn't find anyone who actually did it. They all used the shortcut. I've thought about putting up a tutorial for it, but don't even have an account there.

I gotta say it's interesting to hear someone running into problems like not knowing you can pick up rocks. It was another of those things I couldn't really describe how I figured it out, but I was doing it the first time I was trying to beat Vents.

That's the sort of thing that nowadays a game would do something to teach you is possible before blocking your way with it. The Asterite had me stuck for weeks though. And I do remember in Tides of Time the crystals you have to hit with rhythmic sonar to break them loose took me seemingly forever to figure out.

I was playing some last night and something else very useful they don't explain well came to mind. After you get the confusion sonar from saving the lost dolphins in Lagoon, you can permanently kill enemies.

All you have to do is quickly tap the dash button again after having killed an enemy. If you do it right you'll see that instead of disintegrating into light sparkles, they do a little spiral into Ecco. After that the jellyfish or shark or whatever won't respawn if you leave the area.

This gets very very useful in some of the later levels when there are tons of shark, crabs and the like getting in your way.

Yup. If I remember right in ToT he can do it from the start. In Ecco 1 you need to rescue all the lost dolphins in the 4th level. That also gets you the confusion sonar power which is extremely useful as well. So you can confuse a shark and kill it without too much trouble so it doesn't come back

I figured it out.
After you talk to mommy orca, she sings that you have help of all orcakind.
At THAT MOMENT, one of her five kids you just saved swims away.
You are supposed to follow him, as he leads you to the place where the boulders are.
Or rather were, as they vanished allowing you to pass.
Well, that could have been conveyed more clearly. There are five of those little black motherfuckers swimming around, how am I supposed to notice one of them swimming away?

Anyway, next level is the same dance of 'follow the leader', and It seems the finally difficulty seems to slowly ramp up. After few failed attempts, I decided that its no use tryng to follow the dolphin while trying to avoid enemies, so I took one thing out off this equation.
Pre-clearing whole route out of enemies is tedious. Even more so when you manage to die later on and have to clear it all over again.
I yet have to advance further, but its a bit nice to have a bit of challenge on the skill level and not on 'what the fuck am I supposed to do now?' level.

You can also alter the music's tempo which is pretty fun.

To do it, make him turn and pause while he's facing the screen. Then press Right, B, C, B, C, Down, C, Up

It works in every port of the game except the Sega CD version. It will let you swim around and explore the levels and story without the tension of the game if that's what you want.

Basically LSD dream emulator but u play as a Dolphin or Raven like spirit animals n shit. I think Unreal Engine might be better for this type of game. Its up to us to create what does not exist. Ed tried kickstarter and Big Blue was a Big Blue piece of shit mobile education game. The problem for me is I am a shitty programmer and more of an artist but I do have ideas for a trippy dolphin game. I usually just steal shitty code examples from youtube vids is the extent of my programming knowledge.

Ok, correct me if Im wrong.
Morphspheres, or however those things that make you change into other animals, are parts of the Asterite.
I thought about it, and its basically the only thing that makes sense to me.
Where do we encounter them first? The future, where ocean is sentient. It would make sense for Asterite, the most ancient creature in the ocean to shed parts if itself in order to bring ocean creatures closer to each other.
Where do we later encounter the sphere? in present where you can turn into jellyfish. At this point tho, Asterite is already dead, sphere being just a part of its carcass.
Why would parts of Asterite work that way? Asterite is the most ancient creature of the ocean, probably most ancient creature on Earth. Meaning all life evolved from it.
And how does it look? Like DNA string. Not too farfetched that somehow he could change Eccos own DNA into something else, turning him into bird.
But only in the future Asterite was able to perfect the way to detach/regrow his balls, present Asterite couldn't, as seen in first Ecco. Present Asterite was able to make Ecco breathe under water and rapidly regenerate tho, so it would also take some time it could learn to modify one animals into others.

So, does it checks out?
Im only roughly halfway through Tides of Time.

>> No.3948510

>>3948493
The metasphere's aren't parts of it but they were made by it.

As for other life evolving from it, the game isn't clear, but it's an interesting idea. It could well be that the Asterite is another alien being that came to earth billions of years ago and seeded the planet with life. It could also be that the Vortex seek out planets that Asterite beings have filled with life so they can harvest it. Which are neat ideas, but just conjecture unless one of us can kidnap Ed Annunziata and make him answer all our crazy questions.

The redpill is this: there is no redpill. It's time to take off your tin foil hat. Not everything is part of some vast conspiracy involving Pink Floyd, some drug-addled mad marine biologist, ancient aliens and Sega Genesis. Sometimes a game about time-traveling, space-faring dolphins saving the world is just that: a game.

Jokes aside though, wow, really interesting thread. How the fuck did you piece all this together OP? Or are you just parroting some video or something.

Is it fair to say Ecco has the deepest lore?

Get it, 'cause the ocean... is deep...

Anyway all this - the LCD connection, in particular - explains a lot. No wonder this seemed like such a strange game back then, even as a kid. Heck, especially as a kid.

Are there any games where the world and the creatures that inhabit it feel as alien as in Ecco? Most games about aliens sure don't. I haven't played many underwater exploration games. Maybe that's where you should look?

The thing with Ecco is that, while the visuals and the music deserve their rightful credit for creating the atmosphere it has, I think other factors play an equal, maybe even greater, role. In Ecco, it seems as though your character and the NPCs he talks to really aren't just humans in a different skin. A good chunk of this is thanks to how the game uses language. The characters don't speak too much and when they do what they say sounds like something that might come out of Google Translate if it had a Dolphin-to-English mode. It really stands out this way.

One game that has a somewhat similar feel to me is Captain Blood, and that one also talks funny. The characters in Blood all speak in an artificial language made out of icons, and you have to reply to them by constructing sentences in this language, too.

>>3976516
Most people figure it out just by doing it accidentally. For retro games, holding buttons down is often necessary to get the full effect of an action, so it's something I always try when playing a new game. I know that's how I figured it out as a kid. Mario jumping instincts kicked in.
Congrats on getting that far without a map, though. Sounds rough.

>CD is superior in literally every single way imaginable.

Except that the music has no personal feel to it whatsoever, I mean the CD music sounds nice but its like Spencer Nilsen wrote it without having even seeing the game in action.

Memorable moments where this is painfully obvious:

>the moment Ecco travels back in time.
the music in the cartridge is ominous and creates this sense of danger since Ecco is out of his element and surrounded by creatures far more dangerous than those he normally encounters.
the music in the CD is just.. a Jurassic Luau party.

another moment, when Ecco saves his pod from the aliens.
Cartridge music has this fanfare feel to it, as in YOU FUCKING DID IT!! WE'RE ALL GETTING OUT AND FUCKING SOME DOLPHIN BITCHES!!

CD music is like : .. soft and relaxed.

I love the CD music, but the Cartridge music has a much more connected feel to it.
