Raiden DX or Raiden Fighters Jet.

The original is a true classic. Not terribly original by the time it came out, but it just did so many things so well, that it ended up becoming a huge arcade hit (and was one of the most pirated arcade games of all time).

Raiden 2 takes everything thats good about the first game and adds a ton of style on top. The toothpaste laser makes its debut here too.

Raiden DX is like a huge remix of Raiden 2. You'll definitely get more of it if you have played the second game, but imho the stage design, secrets and enemy placement make the game much more interesting. I would compare it to Metal Slug 2 vs Metal Slug X.

Raiden 3 is a really odd game. Unfortunately I can't say it's very good. It's worth some time if you're curious, and it's very easy to get (it's on steam).

Raiden 4 is a great game. There's no reason not to have this in your collection. Overkill adds a ton of stuff, there's a ridiculous amount of content in this game.

I haven't played Raiden 5 because I don't own an xbox one. The soundtrack is really good though.

The Raiden Fighters series of games are their own weird thing. The first game was going to be called Gun Dogs but they changed the name to capitalize on the Raiden brand. They're super fast and intense games with a really involved medaling system.

Bizarre choice of game to port, but the Jag has the best home version.

The only Raiden I played was DX, because a pizza place near me has a cabinet for that among a few other games. I haven't played any of the home console releases, are they close to arcade quality?

Yeah, because RFJ ran on Seibu's SPI system. This system used changeable game cartridges somewhat similar to SNK's Neo Geo MVS arcade hardware. As such, it would load a large amount of assets into flash RAM from whatever cart was inserted. It only needed to do this once, and only when the cart was switched out. Once the data transfer was complete, the machine would boot normally and quickly until another cart switch was made. Needless to say, MAME emulates this hardware behavior.

(Assuming you're running an English version SPI cart/board and/or the emulated equivalent in MAME...) Boot the machine/emulator. Make sure that JP1 dipswitch is set to "Update" if it isn't already (chances are it is but check anyway.) Wait for the countdown to finish. The machine will tell you to power the board back up with the Update option turned off. This means to set the JP1 dipswitch to "Off" and reboot the emulation/machine. All should be well, even after subsequent resets.

If you're using MAME, an important caveat is that if you fuck this process up at any point, you'll get the exact same issue that you would on real hardware. That is, an "Hardware Error 81" lockup. On a real machine, this is terror. Enough said. Thankfully, if you're using MAME you need only go into your nvram folder (should be in your MAME directory) and delete the pertinent folder. It will be named after the ROM you're running, so most likely "rfjetu" or the like. Once deleted, boot it up again and don't fuck it up this time. The most common culprit for an 81 error is stopping/rebooting the machine before the update is complete. Don't do this.

all I'm saying is that because of the orientation of that sprite, he would fit well in a euro-shmup. Unless someone drew his sprite for a vert shmup.

You giving Euroshooter too much credits.
They will rotate the sprite animation 90w and call it a day.

Also if you can hunt down the Raiden Fighters Aces collection for 360, it's an excellent port of the RF games.
