>What's the best Bomberman for multiplayer?

Let me preface this by saying I haven't played every single Bomberman title in existence, namely due to lack of access to certain platforms. Based on what I have played, Bomberman '94 seemed to have a lot of features to keep multiplayer battles from getting boring too quickly. If I'm not mistaken, this is the game that introduced Rooi / Loui / however the hell the creature's name is translated back to English.

There's a Genesis / MD port under the title Mega Bomberman, but some anons have complained about slowdown with that version. I haven't played it long enough to notice. The GEN / MD version is the only one localized to English, though.

Switch doesn't have paid online yet

I haven't tried it much yet, but the BEST CASE SCENARIO in R's online is you get input delay, which is pretty annoying
Also, I really liked Party Edition on PS1, got some good variety in that

Gameplay-wise it's pretty good imo
It's kind of a collection of many items, arenas and gimmicks from many of the 2D games.
It feels a bit like Saturn Bomberman but with lot more of content.

Growing up I only had the first 64 game and DS, years later as far as multiplayer Bomberman goes.

As far as 64 goes, do you guys feel the multiplayer holds up compared to others? I'm worried I may have missed out.

>Wario Blast! Featuring Bomberman

I'd wager few people actually got to see the game's multiplayer mode, since it required a link cable. Unfortunately, you couldn't play against AI opponents alone. (Although that may be identical to the hidden 5656 password versus mode)

Bomberman GB (GB2 in Japan) had a versus CPU mode that was pretty nice. Stage selection and all. It was accessed with the 5656 password. I think this was also the multiplayer mode accessible from the main menu when the game was run in Super Game Boy mode.

Not him but it's has a SEVERE lag in multiplayer, and that comes from a third-worlder that never thought much of growing up playing emulated slowed down games in a crappy pc.
The worst thing about the lag is that bomberman is a game about timing so this specific kind of lag is a real bitch.

Also, it's pretty basic and there's the need to pay for online.

>> No.3909252

>>3908841
It has the best visuals, best single player, best multiplayer, a still functioning online mode and supports 10 player multiplayer. It is the high point of the series.

>Bomberman '94 has been ported on PS3 and Wii though

It's just an emulated ROM, and it's still in Japanese. So if you want to play an English version, Mega Bomberman is still your only option.

>> No.3909323

>>3909260
the only language difference between the two are the descriptions of battle mode options, all of which are self-explanatory if you've ever played a bomberman game, and area names in normal mode
it's hardly worth missing visual effects, colors, 5 players in battle mode and all suffering the slowdown that somehow just wasn't there in the '94 version
i'm not mentioning the music because they changed some of the music tracks entirely so it's probably more of a subjective thing

I've only ever played Saturn Bomberman with friends. Since I only had 1 multitap, we played 7 players, plus 3 bots for 10 player mode, but I like 7 players +1 bot for the 8 player maps better as they have more variety.

>>3908837
I imagine the other versions would be amazing too as the fundamental gameplay of vs mode is relatively the same. However, I do favor the grid 2D grid view rather than a slightly in-perspective 3D view, since it makes it look like the top and bottom of the playfield are equal. I guess I kind of prefer the abstract view, as my mind is too old to process the newfandangled 3D.

>>3905041
Ooooh! The gold shiny version. So it has extra stages? I want, but probably cannot afford it.

>> No.3909380

>>3909323
>all of which are self-explanatory

No they aren't. You'd have to have advance knowledge of what each of the menus configures. If you memorize those details, then sure - there's no reason to play the English version after all. But again, you'll initially need something to reference to have any knowledge of what the menu options do. At first glance, it's really not obvious which option sets the number of rounds, and which option sets the number of players.

>> No.3909419

>>3909380
even if you're walking in completely blind, you will take at most one or two tries to figure out everything you need to know - there are 4 (5 with team mode on) screens, each housing at most 2 options
>it's really not obvious which option sets the number of rounds
it becomes immediately obvious once you reach the result screen, which displays the option you chose on the top of the screen
>which option sets the number of players.
this one has a real time preview on the top of the screen with number of the bombermen changing depending on the highlighted option, it's really really hard to miss

really the only thing that isn't all that clear at the first glance is the activation of team mode

and with all that said, i'm pretty sure all of the digitally distributed bomberman '94 versions come with a manual that describe the game, i know virtual console one has one
it really isn't worth it playing what is essentially the inferior version of the game

Not like anyone but me will find value in the Genesis multi-tap. I lose out on the hope others will play Mega Bomberman with me, and it only sells for about $5, which is the equivalent of an hour's work, such that it is more worthwhile for me to keep it.

I also got more Hori Mega Commanders with the correct colored turbo switches (the one pictured is my throwaway one for everyday use). I also recently got NHL '94 as an experiment, since I recall learning the rules of American football through Tecmo Bowl, and is a fan of the sport, as it was with NBA Jam, so maybe I will gain an appreciation for ice hockey if I immersed myself into SegaCD NHL '94 (was also considering NES Blades of Steel, NES Ice Hockey, N64 Wayne Gretski's 3D Hockey). I just haven't gotten the will to give it a shot.
