GZDoom has 100% of what Zdoom has and more.

Historically, the difference was that GZDoom was ZDoom with a (default but optional) true 3D OpenGL renderer, allowing features like sloping 3d floors, use of 3d models and advanced lighting effects among other things.

However, ZDoom has officially ceased development since randi, it's main dev, left the community. So if you want to keep up with modern (vastly accelerated) features even if you're targeting the software renderer, you'll want to use and mod for GZDoom which continues to be developed.

I tried it but had no luck. However, I finally got the fucking thing into blender by, bizarrely enough, exporting an MD5 mesh and a Source engine animation file simultaneously from noesis then importing them one after another in blender.

Now I'll look into replacing the gun mesh and learning how to render this shit as a sprite with minimum headache.

All right, Highway to Hell.
Here's the rub. The deadline for mapping's passed already. But I asked a lot of folks how their map was coming along and...well, for the most part, it was dead silence.
So I know I've been supposed to make an announcement post, but I wasn't really sure what to announce, since the status has basically been the same since mid-February.

I think it's safe to say the whole deadline thing isn't really working at all. It worked great in DUMP 1/2/3, but this is...different. There's not really anything to push people to work on a deadline this time around. With previous iterations there was this big community feel-good rah-rah solidarity, with this we're doing things a little more meticulously, which doesn't fit the impending dread of a deadline looming over.
This past several deadlines I've spent the time working on four new maps with shitty STARTAN layouts and no decoration/detail, so I can't really say I've been helping with that either!

So what's this mean for Highway to Hell? Well, outside of case exceptions (i.e. talking to people directly about it or the people that are still interested in it), I think submissions will be closed. If you're stuck on something, send it on over and we can tweak it as needed, and if you're still working on something, well, keep on working on it and you can submit it later.
But we've already got a nice haul of half-finished maps submitted, and if folks aren't interested in tweaking/updating them, then me and a couple friends should probably take matters into our own hands and smooth things over ourselves instead of continuing on waiting.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but SgtMarkIV made something called Brutal Friends. It replaces invisibility spheres teleport beacon items. Using one summons a random character to fight alongside you for the remainder of that map until they are killed.

You can also call them through the console if you want to keep one around forever. This is important to note, because they don't follow you into the next level.

Also something fun I learned to do was to make a bind like this:

Now see, what you do is pick out a monster that will never actually appear in the levels you're playing, like a ZDoom Marine, or an SS Nazi, something from Skulltag, or Realm667, whatever you want.

arachnotrons are massively underutilised.. there is no other monster capable of laying down a constant stream of fire at long range like they can. Vaecrius wrote a tutorial that demonstrates a relatively simple effect that isn't enormously possible in DECORATE

All of the actors in gzdoom.pk3 are converted to ZScript (including a lot of actors that had exclusive "native" code pointers only they could use, like the Raven and Strife baddies), so crack that bad boy open if you want to know how the existing actors do things.

nah, maybe 5 souls is a bit low for a weapon that can instagib almost everything, but otherwise i didnt feel that the game became drastically easier once i found it the first time. I suppose you could abuse it by carefully managing souls and using it asap to maximize ammo and health rewards but thats just too tedious, same as drinking holy water, and is usually a nonfactor in maps which arent focused on careful ammo management

Imo the real imbalanced weapons are the turret mode minigun and railgun, while both shotguns, smg and plasma rifle are really really weak and only seem useful until you find something better

Any chance you could just make the fire extinguisher knock all smaller enemies based on mass and block all projectiles from passing while used? Also the BFGs alt fire seems useless, and the Demon Gun seems to overlap in role too much with the lightning/plasma gun.

Oh yeah and the tracking laser Imps are very annoying as their damage cant be dodged, think they should be made to have slower moving lasers. unfortunately, there's no easy way aside from practice, practice, practice.

room-corridor syndrome arises from the need to connect rooms together.
which sounds like "no shit, you can't just have different rooms at random areas", but when you look critically at a lot of good mapsets you see that a lot of bigger rooms are actually smaller rooms that have been merged together, with different ways to traverse between the two.
pic related, dtwid has its issues but the way it merges smaller rooms into larger rooms is a fantastic reference. in nearly every map there's always a section you keep traversing multiple times across different paths.

for example, in your map take the two upper-right rooms, the bevelled rectangle and the octagon. they're practically already connected, separated by an elongated corridor. chop off the corridor and merge the two rooms together, separating them by a separate method. perhaps there's a height difference that keeps the other player from accessing the other room right away and they need to activate a lift from the previous room first. or perhaps there's several switches that need to be hit before bars lower.
