The Roland creator died today. Let's post retro vidya music that uses Roland sound fonts.

You're on a board for 80s and 90s video games and you've never heard of Roland? I can assure you that 90% of the games you played that used any sort of sample-based soundtrack had Roland samples in them.

Roland is one of the biggest names on the keyboard market, on par with Yamaha. Their PCM synths, in particular the Sound Canvas, is what musicians used to make the MIDI tunes of old PC games (the ones that had anything more sophisticated than adlib music, anyway).

With all the people who love retro video game music, I'd have thought more of them would be aware of the sound sources they used. But I'm a big synthesizer/sampler fan, so maybe it's just me.

Here's a scene from a 1996 Capcom video where you can see a Roland U-110 in the background. That particular module was very heavily used in Super Street Fighter II's soundtrack.

I'm not a music production enthusiast, don't listen to video game music outside of playing games, don't listen to chiptunes or electronic music at all really, and have never owned prosumer music production hardware or even a musical instrument.
But I know Roland as one of the most famous brands of keyboards and drum machines, along with Yamaha and Korg I guess.
If you've ever seen a music video, a live musical performance, even just watched Saturday Night Live, you've probably seen a keyboardist standing behind a machine with one of those brand names.

My point is that this is actually very well known stuff in the sphere of cultural common knowledge. There's even a movie about the very famous TR-808 drum machine:

Only one I remember for sure that had SC-88 data was With You, but I think some other Windows games did, probably other F&C titles. Others were just GM or GS. I'm don't know if any actually used Pro functions, but I wanted a Pro for MIDI files people were putting up on the net.

no. 95% of dos pc's had a soundblaster or compatable soundcard which always used a yamaha synth chip for midi. Not roland. Very little if any consumer sound cards outside of dedicated pro audio gear used roland hardware at the time.

Fuck! I recently decided to eBay purchase a 486DX4 as self punishment for throwing out my old 486DX4 machine that I kept until 2007. That was my DOS machine, but I had thought DOSbox was good enough so to lighten the load when moving. Just about a week ago I had the crazy thought to get a Roland MT-32 to pair with a SoundBlaster (haven't decided original, 16, AWE32, AWE64, or Gravis Ultrasound) because they look fucking cool, pretty modern looking, and sound really good from youtube samples.

Just a few days ago LGR released a video on the MT-32 and now the creator died ... probably causing the expected spike in eBay price.

Last one I was going to purchase through "Buy It Now" but wanted to wait for my next paycheck, but some fucker decided to bid the bare minimum, and the thing ended out more expensive than the BIN price. I hate my burger flipping job.

Anyway, one of the primary reasons I am redoing my 486 build is because I do enjoy Princess Maker 2 for DOS. So here's the retro vidya music in SC-55 which also looks very cool and sounds nice, but I am not sure it sounds as good as the MT-32 to me in subtle ways:
https://youtu.be/z7ZWKlMWbsw

I also haven't decided on a video card yet either, I am open to suggestions on what I should get (including aforementioned sound card.

This guy was also part of the team who helped create MIDI and is basically the grandfather of all modern music and is one of the reasons all of your videogames had sick compositions because artists could use MIDI controllers for composing.
So even if you dont care about a roland drum machine or anything (which you should because it had a colossal influence in music) , this dude is still hugely important.
Rest in peace my dude, the grandfather of all modern musical technology.

Falcom switched to MIDI sequencing for their games around 1994 (they still did FM-synth music for a while) and used Roland sound modules, like the SC-55, for Popful Mail SFC and Ys V (and maybe Legend of Xanadu I & II):

Notice the overdrive guitar sample in the first track. I wonder if and when someone will acquire the Windows Ys multimedia collections so we can look at pre-production materials about their MIDI works. Also, Motoi Sakuraba used Roland kits for his console works through the Golden Sun duo on GBA, too.

IIRC this band was bankrolled by Yamaha and was basically used as a walking advertisement for Yamaha gear. No disrespect intended--these ladies rocked the fuck out.

Roland was amazing but I always felt like their Sound Canvas stuff existed in a musical uncanny valley. It sounds like real instruments, but it's not quite realistic enough and seems weird.

I like the more overtly synthetic sound of Yamaha chips, like all those classic late 80s arcade games.
