How many DBZ games have you played?
Which ones did you enjoy?

I've already played all the fighting games and the SNES RPG, and recently got into playing the Super Goku-den games.
Finished the first one, pretty awesome presentation, weird battle system.
Currently playing Super Goku-den 2, I had to start over because I fucked up at one of the quiz and got a bad ending, Raditz takes Gohan with him and destroy Earth a year later along with Nappa and Vegeta.
Anyone else played these games? There's quite a few things I don't understand, not only about the combat system but also about the dragon ball-collectan, I don't get the DB% or how do I affect it.

There's a story based 1v1 fighter on the PC Engine. You play as Goku against 6 different opponents in the story, and there's cutscenes identical to the show

It's kinda weird, some kind of real time turn based fighter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yM4ubAMRTcs

There's also the Mega Drive game that is similar to Butouden series, and has characters from the Frieza and Android sagas

I'm slightly lean toward Super Butoden 2 as my favorite, but HD definitely comes second, it's amazing, and the sprite art is ridiculously good.
I wonder why such a good game was made for the SFC; it was a very late release in 1996, and it came after the failure on PS1 that was UB22.

Just imagine how good Hyper Dimension would look if it was released on Playstation, with bigger sprites, more characters (like Kurilin and Trunks, maybe someone from Dragon Ball like Kame Sennin and Tao Pai Pai, but keeping the roster tight, without thousands of transformations) and redbook audio.
The best looking fighting game we never had.

Yeah, why they released it on SNES on 1996 and using a costly chip I will never understand.

But Hyper Dimension already looks great. The sprites are big enough.
More characters, yeah, that could be cool, but the HD roster is still pretty good, at least it has Freeza, Cell and Boo.
PlayStation got Ultimate Battle 22 with a lot of characters and big sprites, but it looks..... bad.
My suspection is that they weren't experienced with the PS1 hardware (UB22 was an early game launched in 1995 after all), while they were expert working on the SNES.
Shin Butoden on the Saturn is a better game, reuses the UB22 sprites but has better stages and slightly better gameplay, but it still falls short when compared to Super Butoden 2 and Hyper Dimension.

So what DB/DBZ games have an English patch? I once played the DB NES game which was nice but after the first boss the ROM would just stop ;_; I would actually like to fully play this game. I also played something like an RPG for the original Game Boy where you had to run real fast against a Monkey on either planet Namec or it was just God. Well, the Budokai Tenkaichi games used the split-screen and they're often considered the best modern DB games (especially the 3rd one). I think it works and fits DB battles pretty well.
I liked it 20 years ago, and still love it now, in fact I think I love it more now because now I can appreciate the uniqueness of it.

I grew up watching the mexican dub of DB/DBZ, and the spanish dub for the DBZ movies, long before DBZ was dubbed in Mexico.
The Spain dub did some really weird things, like changing Gohan's name to "Son Gohanda" and technique names like Kame Hame Ha to Onda Vital ("Vital Wave").
To be fair, the mexican dub of early DB also had some wonky stuff (the KKH was originally called "the glacial wave", when Roshi used it to extinguish the fire on Ox's castle), but later on they used all the correct names.
Only thing that weirded me out was that they renamed Piccolo Daimaou to Piccolo Daimaku.
But to be honest, Daimaku sounds better.

While this is true, the accusations of Yamamoto being a plagiarist are a bit exaggerated IMO. I've heard the comparisons and only some of them sound really similar (like note by note), most of them only share some similarities but it's kind of far-fetched to call it plagiarism, not to mention the alleged plagiarized tracks are only a handful vs hundreds of other songs by him.
When I hear Cell's Theme, I don't think it's a ripoff of Pink Floyd, I think it might sound influenced by PF. But the song is really different, can't call it a ripoff really.
Anyway, plagiarist or not, he made some really great soundtracks on DBZ games, weird to see someone hating the music.

For example: when Gohan beats Zangya, a cutscene triggers where you have to choose between finishing her off or not (just like on the story mode), and after the tournament is over, Broly appears, and at the end Gohan does his super KKH with the same cutscene from the Cell Game on the story mode.

It can be hit or miss for some. I personally reall like the game. The online is basically dead because it came out in a patch about a year after release. Not only that, but the game never really had advertisement so it wasn't popular. The AI is painfully easy, barring a couple modes.

In terms of being a successor to Supersonic Warriors, it basically tried taking the Butoden name and 2D fighting as well as audio quality, but I think it's nice, along with the HUD/UI of the Supersonic Warriors games. I think one theme from SSW was remixed in Extreme Butoden, but I don't remember which one.

There should be a demo in the E-Shop. If you find the gameplay fun, you'd probably like buying the full game. It's not long, with each story mode basically being short what-ifs and the last one unlocking Bardock and Broly. Then you have Adventure Mode or something like that. You do some objectives, and doing them well enough nets you assists to use in battles, and that unlocks Beerus. Then you have the Extreme World Tournament, which unlike the rest of the game, actually has the AI fucking do something instead of stand there like a braindead ape. After beating that, you unlock SSG Goku. Finally you have the Extreme Survival, which is just a survival mode that nets you Extreme Points, which at certain milestones will get you Extreme Characters that I'll touch on later.

The whole shtick of the game is to balance out your "DP" cost of combatants and Z-Assists. You have 6 slots, with Combatants taking 2 and assists taking 1. You tap the screen to either use an assist or switch combatants. Doing this puts them on cooldown for a certain period based on their DP cost, which always range from 1-7. You can also typically gauge a character's strength by their DP cost. For example, Raditz is DP1 because he has low health, damage, and his attacks aren't really that good even though with 4 assists, he can get an infinite combo.

SSGSS Goku is DP7. He has the highest health in the game, good attacks, specials, and is overall just an extremely powerful character that can abuse some really annoying tools. There are outliers, such as Beerus who is beyond broken. He's the "year 20XX" of EB.

Extreme Characters are DP7 versions of each character that were originally DP1-6, that ranging from Raditz to fucking Broly. Extreme Characters are given bonus damage and defense based on what DP they were beforehand, with DP1 getting the largest boost barring Broly. His boost is way too fucking high.

The "meta" is DP15. I've done a lot of testing, and I agree with this. It prevents people running with two DP7s and good assists. I personally run Bardock, who isn't great but he's my favorite character, and Cell. I also use two assists, as running 2/2 combatants/assists is the most common and strongest combo barring gimmicks such as solo Raditz, Ginyu, or either of the Buus.

While it's a button masher at first, you can learn great combos that either work with out without assists. For example, SS Goku, Cell, Trunks, SS Gohan can all create pretty damaging combos without assists, but someone like SS Vegeta can perform devestating combos with the help of assists. Then you have Beerus who can, without assists, kill any character in a single combo. You also typically have different combos depending on distance because opponents wallbounce lower when you're closer to the corner.

A lot of, if not every single character is viable no matter their DP cost, which is really nice. Obviously some are stronger than others, but it's really refreshing.

Bear with me, just bear with me please. While the online is dead, there is a dedicated Discord to EB. They're actually chill people who just want to play some EB. I'd highly recommend going there, as you can get plenty of action there.

If you are interested in the game or have any questions, just shoot 'em my way. I'd recommend getting it if you want a game that can be played casually but has a surprising amount of potential as a fighting game.

What's you're favorite character?

Have a great day, anon.

I played the demo of Extreme Butoden and liked it, but it was nothing like the Butoden games.
To be fair, the Butoden game released on the DS wasn't like the classic Butoden either.
The last Butoden was Shin Butoden on Saturn sadly.

I never touched dbz on vr consoles. I didnt know any of these games existed

Many of them have had translations for a while, they were some of the most popular games that people downloaded in emulators in the late 90s/early 00s other than the top dogs like Mario, Final Fantasy, etc.
Some of the fighting games also had official release in some European countries, or were available in pirate form.

Anyway, try them out if you like DBZ, most of them are pretty good.

A little trivia: the same team who developed the two Gokuden games went on to develop the first Digimon World.

at least tried several on the GB/NES/SNES
the fighting ones on SNES were good, the card games were in jap and I couldn't figure out on Gameboy, the NES one Kacho played was bad.

favorite one is Attack of the Saiyans on DS. Classic style JRPG, 3 person party, combination attacks, spending points to upgrade/unlock moves. mainly takes place between the time of the end of Dragon Ball and the beginning of Dragon Ball Z

From what I could gather on Mobygames, some of them worked on Digimon World DS, but not the playstation game.
