I was playing Mega Man Legends for the first time last night and thought it looked great. Also beat Kagero Deception II recently and all the different models for the people you kill looked cool and varied. Definitely not the ugliest console, that's for sure.

my dad used to love this one for it's graphics. They were damn good for it's day.

psx had a bunch of great looking games, why would anyone hate on it? don't you understand that it was the first 3D generation? of course characters would be low poly, lightning wouldn't be realistic, textures would be all pixelated.

Even then, you get great looking games like MGS, Crash bandicoot, Ridge Racer 4, FF9.
And if you don't dig that, there's plenty of good 2D like klonoa, Capcom fighters, megaman X series and... megaman 8 (one of my all time favourite 2D games as far as graphics go)

Yeah by subdividing I really meant tessellation in real time when you walk up close, most PS1 games do this. My issue is developers abusing it way too much to the point where it's hurting performance if it wasn't locked to 30. Some guy wrote this on the N64's wikipedia page a while ago (been removed for a while) and it's bullshit.

Neither the N64 or PS1 made much use of flat shading, they used GOURAUD shading. And quite honestly, I've seen it used much more often on PS1. N64 developers had a habit of spamming (low-res) textures on absolutely everything while on PS1 they'd put up one or two high-res textures and then everything else would just be shaded. Spyro's a good example.

I'm not criticizing that there is a grid of polygons, because that's needed due to the tiling of textures and even more so to a light extreme in order to reduce polygon wobble on Playstation. The problem is why it looks like random garbage instead of a uniform mesh like >>3897989 or >>3898040. Also idiocy like a small part of the ledge on the right having a thousand polygons when it shouldn't. I don't mind it looking like shit because of all those reasons, because Namco Museum still looks bomb. The problem with SimCity like I said is the horrible texture LOD (roads are smudges beyond 10 feet) and things cut off from draw distance. If those kinds of anomalies weren't there, it would be Namco Museum Windows 98 level of aescreensaver.

I'm using PCSX Reloaded with PGXP and Pete's OpenGL 1.78 I believe, or whatever else plugins that cycles wireframe modes with F11.

Yep. I always found strange how the walls looked different from the floor and the character when I emulated it in high resolution, like if they were rendered in a different way or in a different layer, like in Saturn games.

One of the very few techniques that actually only works in the original resolution.

It's really interesting to see the techniques developers would come up with before they actually understood the hardware and how "good" graphics should look and work.

The console was a success in their release because making games was pretty easy on it compared to other consoles.
The psx has most of my favourite games so, no complaints.

I wish there were PS1 games who opted out of textures. Imagine how great why will look then, and how much complex geometry could be. But I guess textures were a too important gimmick.
Are there any examples?

It might be shocking, but there are good-looking Speccy games. With any platform, it depends on skill of the artist, not the platform. PSX looks cool when it's cartoony like Crash Bandicoot, and bad when it tries to be 'realistic' like MGS.

Sony was the breath of fresh air that let devs get out from under the oppressive thumb of Nintendo, faggot.

Nintendo have made nothing but pure trash from the N64 onwards. Sony at least still funds the occasional "hardcore" game.

Of the big 3, ideally I would have liked Sega to be the top dog thanks to their arcade ethos. But Sony is a hell of a lot better than Nintendo by every conceivable metric. Keep playing your literal children's games, I have more respect for the tards that thought TLoU was a good game than I have for people who enjoy imagine babies-tier Mario games, and maybe half a good game every decade.

The only times psx games don't look that outdated is when they're mostly polygons. Games like Crash, Spyro, and Ape Escape.

When you've got polygon objects in the foreground and pre-rendered backgrounds, it's going to look dated. More so with upscaled polygons.

They perform polygon subdivision in areas where the perspepective transform would cause texture warping. By using smaller triangles the interpolated coordinates would be in a range that wouldn't cause distortion.

Vagrant Story would be my go-to. Really maximises the PS1's textures and models, every pixel is squeezed for what it's worth and painted intelligently.

Personally my favourite PS1 art style and models belong to Megaman Legends. The models are often bare-bones polygon-wise, particularly the NPCs who are usually walking rectangles, but the art style and textures combine to make what I consider a perfect low-poly aesthetic.
