Faxanadu is one of my personal favorite games, but I would never say it's better than Zelda II.

the atmosphere is top notch, and it pulled off the whole side-scrolling action rpg idea really well. it does have a few issues, and it can be a bit clunky at times, but it's well worth playing through.

It's one of the most recommended titles for the NES.

I like them both, but Zelda II is a much better game. Faxanadu uses an interconnected world, which is frankly tedious to backtrack through. (And you will be backtracking for keys.) Zelda II's overworld map navigation was a much better approach IMO.

Battle of Olympus uses an interconnected world as well, even though an overworld map is displayed between areas.
