It's not that I have no desire to be honest it's just that I have zero nostalgia for the system. PS1 was the first console
I ever purchased as a working adult and I played the fuck out of it through my senior year of high school and all through college. When the ps2 came out I had already moved on to Dreamcast and then after that flopped I went over to Xbox. Been on Xbox/pc ever since.

The parallel port doesn't do video though. You can do component natively through the regular Playstation multi-out connector with a PS2 component cable. Much simpler than messing around with SCART or whatever, and you can use a consumer CRT with component-in and get great results if you can't get your hands on a PVM right away.

Yeah it is, I did however buy it refurbished and it has a new laser in it. I wanted one of these models because of the serial port and the standard audio/video out RCA connections on the back. The PS1 was an INCREDIBLY good CD player and I have plans of sticking this is my stereo unit to use for that purpose as well.

Intelligent qube
Mega man legends
Einhander
Blood omen
Soul reaver
Resident evil series
Oddworld series

Amazing and arguably the best in the series.

Exceptional shooter from Squaresoft of all devs.

>Gradius Gaiden
Arguably the best Gradius, but was never released outside of Japan. The Gradius Collection on PSP has it and it has a North American release.

>G-Darius
One of the best shmups ever made, but the PS1 port suffers from slowdown. You can get the Taito Legends 2 collection on PS2 that has no slowdown, but lacks the extras of the PS1 port.

I still have my old PS1 from 1996 or 1997, but kinda struggles with games if they have scratches.

I always play on my PS2 tho. Its the latest fat variant that got released in europe, so it basicly has a legit PS1 inside. And with component picture and optical audio the quality is way better than the old PS1.
It reads all my games well too, so much more enjoyable playing on it.

My all time favourite games are:

1. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis / Metal Gear Solid.
- RE3 is a prefect combo of horror, action and challange in my opinion. Great music and atmosphere, and good replay value.

The rest are in no particular order:

-Spyro series (1-3), really fun games, holds up pretty well in both graphics and gameplay.

-Air combat / Ace combat 2, if you love fighters you have to try them. Great music and gameplay. (2 is especially good)

-Abe's Odyssey/Exoddus, my alltime fav 2d platforming games.

-Twisted Metal 2: World Tour, really fun game, but its the co-op that makes it fantastic.

-Silent Hill, this may be the creepiest game I've ever played, so imersive. One of the greates horror games ever made.

I'm actually pretty jealous. I remember my 1001 fondly, but eventually it had a prolonged death forcing me into getting then-budget Saturn games. Its library is pretty impressive as even with the Saturn being my primary system for multiplats such that I still have more for the original PS than of the PS2 and even less of PS3 (partly because I mostly chose multiplats on 360 for that round).

It looks like you chose wisely for the games you already have. I would say get Final Fantasy Tactics as that is one of my most favorite games on the system I keep revisiting. Best part with the game is its price is very low even to this day. I will second Silent Hill as well as it is pretty intense.

I thought the original Playstation cannot utilize the PS2's component cables. It does output RGB on the AV Multi out port.

>>3887654
Back then I had a perfectly sized spring that goes onto the plastic piece to the button which indicates a closed lid, for the swap method. That's how I originally played imports on the 1001. Never utilized the parallel nor serial ports. The Gameshark is a pretty good thing to have I suppose.

>I thought the original Playstation cannot utilize the PS2's component cables. It does output RGB on the AV Multi out port.

It outputs RGB on the same pins as the PS2 does but you need sync from somewhere else. Either the composite RCA on SCPH-100x models or using a guncon adaptor for all others including PSOne (slim).

So yes, you can use PS2/PS3 component cables on the original PlayStation. Just not to carry YPbPr component. It's actually the cheapest, highest quality and most convenient way of getting RGB in SCART-unfriendly parts of the world.

>> No.3889326

>>3889303
>It outputs RGB on the same pins as the PS2 does

Meant to say PlayStation outputs RGB on the same pins as PS2 outputs YPbPr (or RGB if you switch it in the menu).

The point is that YPbPr cables intended for PS2/3 are fully capable of carrying the red, green and blue channels from an original grey PlayStation but you simply need to source your sync from somewhere else (via composite video most usually) and run an extra RCA to your monitor.

Both Parasite Eves were good, the second was an evolution of the first that experimented a little but not too much. The first is very resident evil like.

Omega Boost is a very underrated game in the crowd I run with, excellent game though. I also am partial to the Gex games, they are lacking in polish but the humor and heart put into them is top notch.

If you're into Pokemon, the Jade Cocoon game is great, put random disks into the console to generate eggs for monsters, you can probably look up a list of CDs that produce what monsters nowadays.

Einhander (sp?) is also excellent.

Fighting Force is good, and I can't remember if that's the name of the one that has the AWESOME soundtrack or if I'm thinking of Gekido, both are similar and good.

I think I used to put the Gekido disk in my car's CD player on the way to work when I was salty. Those were the days.

If by c-sync you mean sync on composite video I agree it's not ideal but still better to have RGBcvS than straight s-video which is the next best output option on a stock PlayStation.

In any case I'm planning to mod my 5552 to output raw composite sync straight from the VDP to the composite video pin on the multi-av.

Ah, I had no clue that PS2 component cables would work, cannot verify myself but interesting to know. I just use a JP21 cable for the system. These days I sort of regret going JP21, but official PS, SS, SFC, etc. RGB cables I knew of were JP21 then. My RGB needs are already met, still good to know in a pinch, maybe I should get another set of PS2 component cables in case.

>>3889460
There are bad games in there too, like Thousand Arms. I only got that because back then I enjoyed stat management/date sims like Tokimeki Memorial, Mitsumete Knight, Princess Maker, Sakura Taisen, etc. I thought I had to support one getting localized. I remember the website with fan questions to the characters, some cringey stuff. I wish I hadn't lent out my US Valkyrie Profile, as my friend has disappeared from me with the game, and now the game has gotten to unaffordable prices.

You'd be best off going for PS3 cables with the metal barrelled connectors as they tend to be better quality.

Component cables in general are most definitely better quality than most SCART and JP21 available today simply from a shielding aspect. This is why I advocate this method of hooking up RGB despite living in SCARTland.

Yes, the PSX was a special dvd-enabled machine released by Sony.

Yes, someone made a mistake somewhere and called the PS the PSX, possibly someone working at Sony, and for whatever bizarre reason the name took off and could be seen all over the western world, being used instead of the more obvious and sensible PS. It was indeed an insane thing to happen but it did. People called it the playstation but very often magazines started putting it as PSX for abbreviation, despite it making no FUCKING sense whatsoever.

I am planning on plugging the video my launch PS1 with RCA Hi-Fi audio on my SCART switch along with other consoles which output to BNC cables which go on my CRT TV and audio which goes to my 6.1 surround receiver while my the RCA port audio on the back of the PS1 goes on separate inputs on my surround receiver and I setup my receiver to go to that input.

Is there really a difference in audio quality or is it just a meme and I should just stick to a PSOne Slim for the sake of a more reliable lens.

I prefer plugging the audio on my surround receiver because of the Dolby Stereo surround audio.

I get that collecting is all the rage and all, but come on. When i was a kid, i usually had a console and 5 games max. And sometimes that lasted me years without me even wanting more.

I seriously believe that the internet making absolutely everything and all information available 24/7 has ruined all of our lives to a degtee. We all want everything.

I got this back in the day for my 1001, but I lacked the equipment nor ability to use it.

Soldering is probably difficult for my non-steady hands. All I can gather is that I am melting those wires to a liquid and sticking pins in them such that they cool back to a solid. Given my poor dexterity, I'd probably melt and fuse more than what I'd want to together. Also I'm probably barely intelligent enough to sniff in all the vapors too. That's why I don't mod, as much as it is a necessity for my hobby, I have to rely on the expertise of others to help me with it.

And you get so much more, and you probably paid at least 50 for that nice ps1, you can get a perfect ps3 for 100 or less... So I just don't get it, is it the 'aesthetic'? That's bullshit, maybe 5-10 years ago ff7 was worth that much but now, 15 bucks from gamestop. And how much would it be to get the case and manual seperately from ebay... like 5 bucks maybe? so 20 total, can't be much more than that for a CiB version of FF7. FF7 used to be worth that much but the PSN and all the other re-releases and the fact people realized it's not worth that much at all

I'm planning on getting a Japanese PS1 for imports since I've been using my PS2 for American games. Would there be any issues if I bought just the console itself and used American cables/controllers/memory cards/etc?

The PSU is rated for 100v rather than 120 so will almost certainly work but may dissipate more heat from the 7805 voltage regulator than if fed the correct supply. Anyone familiar with PlayStations will know that this is not an ideal scenario, particularly with SCPH-100x models.

Apart from that all accessories are fully interchangeable between regions.

Should I get some kind of converter then to be safe? Aside from that, glad to know I won't have to spend any extra money on controllers and cables. Might have to get a new memory card though cause my current one is full. Then again, I could just move stuff I'm not using to my PS2 memory cards.

You could get a 120-100v stepdown transformer but would probably cost more than the console.

Another option would be to swap out the internal power supply board from the equivalent US model. Make sure it's the same though as the wiring to the mainboard was changed some time during production.

I feel like I keep discovering hidden gems and obscurities on the PlayStation. Some of them in the so-bad-it's-good category, but hidden gems none the less.

Have you heard of Gamera 2000? It's a Panzer Dragoon-like with GREAT cutscenes.

Might just go with the former cause I don't trust myself much with opening up consoles and such. Tried to replace the sticks on my Dualshock 2 and when I put it back together the buttons stopped working. Plus I'm considering getting a Japanese Saturn in the future so I could use a step down transformer for that too.

I've been having the same train of thought lately, that the ease with which you can just go "fuck it, i'll play something else" makes it harder to sit down and enjoy one thing for a while. When we were kids, you better get damned good at all five or six of your games, because that's all you get to play unless you get to go rent one for a weekend.

They look worse the better your CRT is, too.
The way to make them look decent is emulation. I'm not aware of upscalers which can downsample to 320х240 and than upsample using bilinear (or other natural) filtering.

>> No.3903980

>>3903840
when you bump a static image to 1080p, or anything but native, you're just stretching details. Best way to play PS1 is on an RGB CRT and it's probably the easiest console to get RGB out of too.

Get one legit game, download iso, burn then swap. Look up the swap trick. I made a guide here once. I did it when i was like 12 and it took about an hour of practice, granted i was young. Now if the game doesn't boot within a try or 2 i did something wrong.

Isn't that hard. Kind of fun actually. Plus you can boot game tools, boot loaders, emulator disks, fan made games etc. It will not ruin the spindle at all, if you do it like in idiot MAYBE your game will get scratched but not bad enough not to work. Use some cheap shitty game as your swap disk. Or buy an action replay disk or something and do it that way.

The ps1 looks like a tank, but it is REALLY built like one too. i swapped for like 8 years before accidentally stepping on mine (it was the small PSOne) and broke the spindle. My old ps1 is still a tank.

I wouldn't do it this way, as you can't stop the disc from spinning before you remove it, thus leading to possible damage.

I bought an actual swap disc from eBay awhile back for like $6. I think it's called ps-xchange or something. If they're still that cheap, I'd recommend grabbing one. It actually stops spinning the disc before you perform the swap.

The only downside is that you have to tape down the tray sensor. It includes a decal for you to use just for that purpose. But that means some multi-disc games will no longer work with your PlayStation, such as Parasite Eve. It depends on whether or not the game allows you to save before switching discs, since those games will simply allow you to load up your save with the new disc inserted after a hard reset.

Is there even 3d games on PS1 that embrace unblurred textures? I doubt even Megaman Legends does. Is such thing even possible on a system where usual resolution was 320x240? Everything out of reach of game cameraman's hand is a mess anyway.
