Anyone ever play Xak III's translation?

I haven't gotten too far. It's kinda neat, but you move slowly and it feels like your sword has no range. But I've gone through the other 3 Xak games, so I might as well finish out the series.

Burning Angels, it's a decent scrolling shooter that is a bit too expensive for its quality.

Best value for your money on the PCE when it comes to shooters?

SideArms. That game is fucking metal.
Any of the Konami HuCards (Salamander, Gradius, Twinbee) - these all rock, and in some cases provide hours of playability with extra loops

Twinbee and Salamander fix the problems those games had in their arcade original formats, making them very recommended. I <3 Twinbee.

Darm is extremely hard.

Your best bet is to have the rings from the goddesses that decrease Darm's attack equipped, as well as starting out the fight with a full MP bar and using the final spell which gives you temporary invulnerability, and getting enough hits on him then in order to survive the second half of the fight without it.

Also, setting the game to Slow gives you a bit more reaction time.

It's really tough though. Good luck; it took me many tries.

I cant even get him to 25% health. It's like the Ganon fight in Zelda 1 only instead of a dozen or so hits it's like 250 and you have no fucking invulnerability frames.

ha ha ha, there are several Wonder Boy games FOR the PCE.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land was released as Bikkuriman World, which unfortunately reskinned all the player/NPC/boss characters to the tie-in sticker-collectathon fad, Bikkuriman. It still plays exactly like Wonder Boy though.

Adventure Island is a port of Wonder Boy in Dragon's Trap, and is identical except for a few sprite recolors.

Wonder Boy in Dragon's Lair has a port to the CD-Rom2, and is a very faithful port (though I think this is the least good WB game).

Wonder Boy in Monster World was released on the Super CD-ROM2 as Dynastic Hero, which reskins everything to make the game look ugly and retarded, with new music. But it still plays the same as Wonder Boy in MW.

Adventure Island is easily the best WB game on the system. But if you have all the Wonder Boy games you might not want to drop cash or emulate them unless out of curiosity.

WB-like games, let's see...

Aoi Blink was made by Westone and plays like WB in MW. It's much easier and is an anime tie-in to an Osamu Tezuka anime about a blue donkey.

Blood Gear (pic related) is an action RPG that is somewhat similar to WB in that it has side-scrolling action levels, though its towns are top-down DQ style. It's mostly in Japanese, but pretty easy to figure out after a little fiddling and experimentation in the menus. It has a nice variety of levels/weapons, and is pretty fun.

Popful Mail has a very nice PCE CD port, and that too is a side-scrolling action RPG. Much more friendly for non-speakers since its menus are far more simple to navigate.

The fight's impossible without the Goddess Ring equipped, meaning that 60k gold Life Drop doesn't really have anywhere to use it at.

ah sorry i meant shield magic

you're supposed to have the full set of battle armor, the shield magic and goddess ring all equipped

you can also buy an elixir from the guy in lance village and use it midbattle i believe, though i don't know if that was introduced in the eternal ports or not

Depends what you like

The best platformers on the console are Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, New Adventure Island, Bonk 2, Parasol Stars, Ninja Spirit, and Liquid Kids. Legendary Axe is also a solid Castlevania type game.

Soldier Blade, Air Zonk, Salamander and the Thunder series are excellent and not impossible shooters to try

RPG's are tough because a lot of them aren't translated. Try all the Ys games.

Legend of Xanadu 1 and 2, the top tier Action RPG games on the console, are translated but won't be released until the (optional) dubs are recorded

River City Ransom and Super Dodgeball have some nice ports

Zelda fans might tell you to play the Neutopia games. They are very boring, but the 2nd one is decent

The Bomberman series is must-play. 93 and 94 are better than all of the snes games.

There's a bunch of SEGA games on the PC Engine. Some of the more fun ports are Shinobi, Fantasy Zone, and Outrun

PC Engine is a great console for shooters, pretty good for RPG's, okay for platformers, and kinda trash at beatemups. It's very complementary to the snes

The best console to get is a Duo-R, no modding required

If you really want to go hardcore, then get a supergrafx with super cd-rom

On Black Friday, I got the Turbo Everdrive. I have not used it yet, but I want to pair it with a PC-Engine I have no attachment to, as someone said to not remove the Everdrive and leave it in the system even when powered off to not do damage to the card slot. I still have some actual TurboChips and was able to afford only one Everdrive so I would be constantly switching the Everdrive and TurboChips between my systems. As a bonus, I hear the DBgrafxBooster TTP on a PC-Engine (or CoreGrafx/SuperGrafx) outputs better RGB than my Duo, so what is a fair price for one of those NEC consoles?

I just want to play some Japanese HuCards, and those many games I cannot afford.

Any reason why Duo-R specifically? My original plan was to just get a stock PC Engine for the aesthetics over TG16.

>> No.3889496

>>3889464
Duo plays all the CD games out of the gate, and the Duo Rs have -slightly- better caps in the machines that don't make them potential headaches like the original Duo (a recapped duo is better than a stock Duo-R though).

Though honestly, I think the HuCards have the better library, so a stock CoreGrafx, perhaps modded (perhaps not!) with an everdrive gives you just about the majority of the best games on the system. The CD library is mixed, and despite have a few true standouts, is mostly visual-novel/digital comic stuff, or style over substance.

Because capcom's shooters are very underrated, and SideArms is plenty of fun (not its anemic CD "remake" mode). It is classic Capcom fast-paced action that not many shooters emulate; SideArms plays more like an action-run-n-gun (with no gravity) than a "traditional" shooter. This is the case with many of Capcom's early shmup efforts. It's unique and fun.

They could be dirty even if it doesn't look like it.

Soak them in apple cider vinegar for about a half hour and then scrub them with a toothbrush, they should come out shinier. Also resist the urge to bend them too far for better contact, they work best when there isn't too much pressure.
