Judging by the quality of the arrange tracks compared to the original, it's pretty safe to say that the composer for this game was a lot more talented than the SNES sound chip could adequately play.

A few years ago they released an album with the original arrangements of the music tracks for Sonic 1 and 2, that is, before they were "converted" for the Megadrive.
They mostly sund like shit, but they have that trivia value.
