Previous thread >>3854325

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

BVM-20G1 with 4k hours on the clock for £30 shipped after the bezel got broken due to less than ideal packaging

BVM-20F1 for £10 BIN with local pick up. One tiny scratch on AR coating

PVM-2950QM for £40 BIN local pick up

KX-27PS1 Profeel for £5 local pick up. Nobody bid on this one so I contacted the seller afterward and narrowly avoided it ending up at the dump

eBay is fine so long as you have good listing notifications set up, monitor them regularly and are prepared to act fast to secure bargains.

A way higher deflection angle (resulting into more shallow tubes) could be made more practical with highly advanced deflection and electric convergence circuits.
These circuits go way beyond the primitive sawtooth generators and perform complicated corrections to the deflection and convergence voltages in realtime depending where the beam currently is. A tube with an 145° angle would be about twice as short as a (ideal) tube with 90° and these complicated circuits would solve almost all geometry and convergence issues.

>each pixel has its own electron beam

Wouldn't that just be a convoluted way of making a display that's functionally equivalent to a LCD? I mean, a big part about CRTs is that you can mess around with timings and get all kinds of scan line counts and refresh rates and stuff, but that would be fixed. You'd also lose the ability to just shove an arbitrary amount of horizontal information into each scanline.

>> No.3877889

the main goals back then were to have the same color range, black level and reaction times while cutting on size. You have to remember how bad LCD were back then.

>> No.3877904

>>3877870
AFAIK you could still theoretically do that you'd just be stuffing them into the "surface conduction electron emitter" with higher density or "refresh rates" or whatever. I don't fully understand it plus a lot of it is still secret developing technology. Like in a perfect world the thing would have 4k physical resolution and to use an extreme hypothetical, if it got a 240p signal it'd run that actual scan pattern through the surface - but that might be a pipe dream. Time will tell or probably not

What these guys said.

SED/FED were essentially just miniaturised and updated versions of age old Jumbotron type technology. I don't believe they'd even reach the sort of pixel densities consumers now demand.

There are laser scanning technologies which better replicate CRT image forming capabilities but again they seem to have fallen by the wayside.

My 1999 BVM has a bit of vsync jitter - about 1/2 a 240p scanline. It's not too bad after it warms up, but I'm on a quest to remove it completely.

Wii is okay for SD content, but is a bit on the weak side, so you're stuck with avi/xvid encoding for the most part. PS3 is bretty gud, especially when paired with a decent PC to transcode stuff and stream it to the console; Also Netflix/Amazon Video.

Any display 480p+ is just best off paired with PC unless the PS3 is considerably more convenient.

>According to some sources [2][3][4][5] in the early 80s, Ikegami developed a number of arcade games as a subcontractor to Japanese video game companies. Among the games they may have developed are Computer Othello, Block Fever, Monkey Magic, Congo Bongo, Popeye, Donkey Kong, Radar Scope, Sheriff, Space Fever, Space Firebird, Space Demon, Heli Fire, Sky Skipper, Space Launcher and Zaxxon.[2] At that time, computer programs were not recognized as copyrightable material. According to these sources, Ikegami proceeded to sue Nintendo for unauthorized duplication of the Donkey Kong program code for the latter's creation of Donkey Kong Junior (1983, Tokyo District Court), but it was not until 1989 that the Tokyo High Court gave a verdict that acknowledged the originality of program code. In 1990, Ikegami and Nintendo reached a settlement, terms of which were never disclosed.[6]

It's speculated they did some important shit. That's from Wikipedia, but I think it's pretty widely believed they at least coded Donkey Kong and some other Nintendo arcade games.

Currently, I have my PS2 and Wii connected to a PVM through one of those universal component cables.

Swapping between the two is kind of a pain, and the Wii side of things seems to be a bit fucked so I wanna pick up individual component cables for the two.

Question is, would I still be able to get RGB through PS2's component if it went through a switch?

And if so, how useful would a scart to component adapter be for SNES? Would it look like shit, let alone even function?

you can get PS2 (or ps1 if you want) rgb really easily with RCA cables. You can get the guncon adapter or a ps1 multiout and just use the composite video port to send the sync signal. If you're using a third party switch, you'll need one which will still send the composite signal from your PS2 - a decent component cable should preserve that signal.

>>3884213
Your set won't take RGB as it stands. The transcoder would be an RGB-to-Component job. Using RGB from your PC (easiest via a Radeon card and crt_emudriver - google it) will give you the cleanest image you can get, and a decent transcoder will give you the second-best result from there. There will be cables involved as well, so factor that into the cost.

This is assuming you want to emulate and not get the PS1 you mentioned. At a guess, the method above would be a slightly nicer picture than composite from a PS1, and will give you many more options down the line such as MAME and other emulators. It will mean an amount of reading, and spending possibly a bit more. A PS2 with a component cable would also work.

They're actually tack sharp when fed a luma signal from something with S-video. Monochrome CRT's tend to have very high line counts since they don't have a shadow mask, and are only limited by the size of the phosphor grain.

Ok I will hold off on tossing it. If I were to swap in a new component, what would it likely be? The place I got it from sells these and has more of the same model, so maybe I can get parts.

It seems like this one http://www.repairfaq.org/samnew/tvfaq/tvpsitd.htm

Here's best what I can recall, which doesn't sound exactly like that faq page.

The picture was fine for the first minute after turning on, then it compressed horizontally, then vertically until it was in the top middle, with an offshoot of different colors. Then I turned it off. Turned it back on, did the same thing, so I pulled the trey and tried changing some of the buttons which didn't do anything except for the comb/trap filter button which made the picture go crazy but compressed horizontally, and humming. Then the power light went off even though the button was still in. Waited about 15 minutes and turned it on and it did the compressed horizontally thing again, which after a few seconds did the vertical compression. Then the light went out again and nothing. Waited about 45 minutes and the picture was black and white but normal size. Then it went compressed and kicked off again. That's where I left it. Sounds like the CRT itself is ok, but like that other poster with the mj pic pointed out, I probably ruined a bunch of stuff by trying it a few more times after it first went bad, right?

not completely, but close. I still need an A24/32 or D24/32. But besides that, i love my 36 CRTs. Got a whole bunch of 20", 14" and 10" studio monitors, also have a range of different Commodore-monitors as well as PC-CRTs. since the question of audio and speakers was raised what do you guys think is a good choice for retro audio?

pic related is so aesthetically pleasing and I don't want to blow out the speakers on my CRT. I know some anon around here has a killer speaker setup. Is a receiver a must? I would like something that can play tapes and cd's. Looks like they're quoting an old version of something from /r/GloriousCRTMasterRace, which in turn was based off of some /g/ copypasta

Technically, mathematically, those resolutions would all fit into some of the frequency limits for the monitor in question (Iiyama 514Pro) which is in turn a tweaked Mitsubishi 2070SB.

It doesn't take into consideration real world limits in terms of what other components in the monitor can actually take, the maximum vertical refresh the monitor can take(the revised pasta changes this) or as >>3892120 said, that there is no commercially available GPU out there that could actually be expected to keep up with those due to the RAMDAC in said cards staying exactly the same for over a decade.

Or the fact that you wouldn't get any sort of gains from anything past 2048x1536 if not lower due to the limits of the tube itself, specifically the stripe pitch and the actual ability for the gun to actually focus in that well.

Nope.
Related components are one PTC and possibly a relay (VGA monitors or 2000s TVs have them).
Degaussing is bad for magnetic media, that's why they should be kept away from any (color) CRT.

>>3895070
The degaussing coil is usually in series with an resistor that increases it's resistance when it gets hot (called a PTC) and the high current through the (16ohms) coil will heat up thus the magnetic field fades smoothly out. Repetitive power cycling will not break the coil but power supply and high voltage circuits will not like it.

well, typically the tubes were replaced after 20-30K hours in the studio business. They last anywhere from 125-200K hours on average, the range for that is so wide because they just tend to show issues at that point. You may notice loud coil whining. Still, 128K hours is about 14 years. It's hard to believe the tube was active the entire time, as the operation time and CRT use time is different on these monitors, if it's not being sent a signal the tube isn't being used.

All the operation time means is there's been electricity flowing through the circuits on the board and the internal clock has been tracking it. It doesn't mean the tube's been powered and using that precious phosphor for that long.

I didn't found much info about that one. Just a bloated site that shows me the first 5 pages of the service manual for free. Also it did cost me less than a PVM with a similar size and these are more common than this one.

I'm thinking of adding RGB/S-Video inputs to this thing, maybe by replacing the video RCA jack with an mini-din 8 socket and use a adapter but first I have to checkout the video ICs and the overall construction.

>I see them on ebay and craigslist now and then.
Well, I actively watchout for a KV-M1120 on ebay for 3 years. I randomly found this one out of boredom, I searched for Trinitron in my local area (<50km) first and found nothing at all but then I removed that filter and saw this one on the top.

Hard to tell, I assume that they wanted to market these huge ones as ultimate living room TVs which can do pretty much "anything" and the small ones for those who wanted a nice little TV for just watching TV.

I have no idea why exactly they left out NTSC support but it's possible to upgrade these small sets.
There are spots on the board to solder the crystal and other parts in, for example BE-4A chassis (pic related): a 4x NTSC subcarrier crystal is needed (14.318mhz, same as in many PC motherboards) and the right load capacitor then enable the NTSC option in the service menu.
I did that out of curiosity to see if it will work and it did.

B&O used to be a fancy brand in Denmark and growing up in the 80's and 90's, every family seemed to have one of their television sets or wall-mounted stereo, so definitely high-end consumer. You can still find a lot of them really cheaply with the remote controlled TV stand that rotates completely silently.

B&O still consider themselves fancy and try to sell flat-panel televisions at absolutely ludicrous prices, which I'm sure rich people who wanna flash their wealth are into, but most normal people just buy a massive Samsung or LG instead these days.

>>3901057
Absolutely, not only do they have excellent picture, they also have an incredibly booming sound so they both look and sound great. I did a video about it which you can watch here.

https://youtu.be/Iujx0-JcFn0

One thing I can't stress enough though is that if you get one BE SURE TO GET IT WITH A REMOTE CONTROL. You cannot access menus or even change the input sources without the remote and if people know what they have, they'll usually sell the TV for cheap and charge you a ton for the remote. Some later revisions of the TV allows for 3rd party remotes, but I wouldn't risk it.

That was a very informative review but I still have a few questions. Does it have a good (noise free) headphone out? What kind of speakers can you link to the amplifier and how good is it? Finally, do you have any pictures of Gamecube games or other 3D consoles running on it? I'm normally not a fan of shadow mask for 3D games but B&O seem a step above the rest.
