Does this game warrant its cult status? I've never played it.

Not really

I wondered the same thing. I was severely disappointed. Check it out for yourself and decide. Emulate before you buy.

I think it's pretty cool, but a lot of people try to sell it as a real next-level, transcendent experience or whatever, which it simply isn't. By no means should anyone ever spend $300 or whatever on an original copy unless they're just really into Sato, I guess.

It seems like you get the idea just by Youtubing 30 minutes of it. From then on, it's just variations on the same thing.

Am I wrong?

I can understand its cult following. It's just completely different and bizarre. I'd love to see a modern follow-up.

This. It's really more of an art piece than a game but if you enjoy the experience it does offer a lot of subtle variety as well as a way of charting your progress. You can get it to do weird things.

I play it while tripping my balls off sometimes and it's a very good time. Best played on a big screen and high as Fuck.

Not really worth all the hype, but it is a novel experience to say the least

It gets boring after 30 mins because you can't interact with anything just walk around ,still I love experimental art pieces like lsd
