In your opinion, which N64 games had the most impressive graphics?

I'm a real N64 hater but the quality of its 3D is clearly superior to PSX and Saturn thanks to SGI. I wasn't a big PC gamer back in the day but now that I've built a retro gaming PC and see games like Half-Life on native GPUs it makes me sad all over again that Nintendo opted against mass storage with the N64.

Conker for special effects (better than many 6th games IMO)

I'm not talking about audio you mongoloids, I'm talking about how the game pulls textures off the cart real time, rather than keeping them all in RAM.

A CD drive would have far too high of a latency to do that.

That would only prevent loading times, but it wouldn't increase graphically quality or anything. The N64's cartridge bus doesn't have enough bandwidth (50 MB/s max, but realistically about 5 to 10 MB/s) to refresh the textures in RAM mid-frame.

>> No.3858405

I think what you mean is that Conker wouldn't be possible on CD without load times and/or the console being considerably more expensive to produce.

>>3858396
Sorry, Man. Nintendo was being petty and greedy. The only thing that kept N64 (and Virtual Boy on top of it) from wrecking the whole company Dreamcast-style was a few brilliant first and second-party studios and a lot of money built up from past successes.

donkey kong 64 had pretty good graphics imo, perfect dark & zelda (both, but ocarina more so) too

>> No.3858415

Ocarina of Time has the best aesthetics and art direction. Nothing until the Gamecube comes close to Inside Ganon's Castle and the final boss fight's ambiance. Objectively, Star Fox 64 and Goemon's Great Adventure had the best all-around graphics though.

It's pretty crazy how sophisticated OoT looks - especially in the Forest/Fire/Spirit temples - compared to other N64 games. The game also has really cool lighting effects at some points, like the glowing shield and attacks during Twinrova and the ice cavern

>> No.3858421

>>3858413
>Not if the volume of textures needed per scene is higher than the amount of system RAM available.
But that was exactly my point. The situation you describe is only remedied by refreshing RAM with new textures in the middle of a frame. I'm saying that the cartridge bus bandwidth isn't high enough to do something like that. Maybe if you were doing 2D graphics, but 3D involves lots of overdraw and needs a lot more bandwidth.

IMO OoT isn't that good looking overall. I mean sure for 1998 it looked great, but N64 graphics did get better over the following years.

Only place that really really held up is the final battle with Ganon, because the lighting effects and graphical detail is just so cool. That the 3DS version fucked it up is an absolute travesty.

Oh, and PDZ's episode 4 boss with all the moving, shifting geometry and ground movement really blows the competition away. To clarify, I didn't mean "frame" when I said "scene." Scene is probably not the right word.
Why can't you load textures in the background as the camera moves around in a 3D area? As long as you plan it well it seems like it would work. Load the textures for a building right before the building comes into frame, and then when the camera moves somewhere else, dump those textures and begin loading some other ones.

Because the game is a technical mess on real hardware.

It has mipmaps turned on (which is expensive for old 3D hardware like N64) and not only doesn't use them for any real benefit, it actually makes the textures look worse because it's permanently fixed to a low mip-level.

Ironically this means the game looks better in poorly coded emulators since they don't even have mipmaps working.

>> No.3863645

Is there anyway to improve frame rates on the n64? I know that sounds like a silly question but I remember a few years back hearing about a gameshark code that disabled some of the texture filtering. Does that actually take any load off the CPU or does the code just stop the effect from being displayed.

Panzer Dragoon series has amazing, creative art direction, but technically it doesn't look better than many of the N64 games people are mentioning. You can notice how the Saturn struggles to keep up with the 3D in many cases, and how many of the effects (explosions, etc) are actually 2D sprites. It's still impressive though, what they did especially with Zwei is amazing, but only in the context of the Saturn, which forte was 2D and not 3D.
