>Japanese's fascination with adolescent.

It's a common trope, not just japanese, a lot of ancient legends have heroes that are in that age range.
Look at david and goliath, king alexander and many others.

It wasn't until Jesus Christ (rather recent compared to many other hero stories) that the hero got to be older (33)

Yep, that's true. I just said "US version" to keep the story simple.

Kind of wish we could have had the option to play Replicant, though.

Anyway back on subject, FF had quite a few of these characters, now that I think of it. Tellah, Cid (IV and VII), Fusoya, Galuf, Cyan and Strago come to mind right away.

IMO, "bald" isn't inherently bad looking, some people pull it off nicely, some look even better than with hair (some hairdos are really shitty). The problem is when people have deformed skull shapes or weird faces.

>> No.3857104

In my late teens I realized that anything past 25 was "old" in vidya and it made me resent the onslaught of 14-22 year old protags I was forced to play as. I always hated finding a bar in an RPG and having to drink milk. I wondered why virtually nothing I played had older characters outside of parental or stuffy old dude roles.

DESU, I thought Cid was supposed to be 50. Felt bad to realize that was how 32 was portrayed. I fucking hate when I learn a character I've always assumed was 40-50 is really 25-35 or someone I thought was 25-30 is 18.

Age is pretty fucked up in RPGs. I feel alienated and discarded.

That developers should stop focusing on demographics to the detriment of the writers' creative vision. Gaming was a lot more interesting when marketers were largely uninvolved with projects. Nowadays, it seems the marketers reserve the right to impose any artistic license upon creative works they had otherwise not been directly involved in. This pretty much explains why there was such a decline in quality with the classic Tomb Raider series - marketers imposed themselves on the development team and quite literally forced Lara to be marketed as a sexual object.

Mostly a trope of ancient mythology which cast young teenagers who go on adventure, which is still prominent in modern Western works like Star Wars.

I'm much happier I went grey earlier than bald that's for sure. I don't think it's super uncommon either. I've known a fair number of women in their 30's and 40's who are all or completely grey and you'd just never know it because they all dye it.

I just roll with it, though finding greay pubes at 19 was a little weird. I always looked weirdly old though. Even as a mid-teenager I'd get handed wine lists when out to dinner with my parents and things like that.

I'm 31 and love my graying hair.... or at least I don't have a negative opinion of it. The only time I was a little upset at it was about 18 when it first started to go a little gray because it had been jet black up to that point. Once it started going a little gray I couldn't really care less then. But there's an element of "silver fox" about it. It'll help you look mature, which if your life is worth anything at all tends to be a bonus. Balding is something however that scares me, thankfully no signs of it yet.

I totally agree about JRPGS, it's a bit demoralizing to see you're about to play your grand epic adventure as a bunch of kids. But if it gets me to play them less I'm not sure that's a bad thing.
