There should have been a more visual cue that the Shamblers and Vores and perhaps even the traps (in a display of reality bending) were being spawned by her, kinda like the Icon of Sin. Even if it wouldn't change anything in the gameplay, it would add a lot of flavor by making it look like Shub is actually fighting you in some way.

No, not much anymore. I have a bad habit of breaking technology, so after my last laptop went 4 years ago I just stopped buying them.

I tried Doom Builder 2 but I wasn't used to how it works so I went back to old Doom Builder. I don't know a whole lot of the differences between them, but in old Doom Builder you had to start on a certain node (0,0) to get floor textures to align properly. I'm pretty sure new DB fixed that.

I was never a part of the community beyond downloading other people's maps. It was just a hobby for me, so everything I made I held on to. There's a few rooms and levels I'm really proud of, but most of it isn't anything extraordinary or special. I do remember that DoomWorld did a top ten of the year every year. It's still up now but I think they don't do the top tens anymore. There's some fucking GREAT wads on there, plus the Columbine wads and an imp-sex wad I jacked off to one time. Good stuff.

The problem however isn't a lack of interest but a combination of amazing arena shooters already existing (Q3, Ut2k4, etc.) and a lack of any significant innovation in the genre. Hmm, I stopped at the part where you're entering the castle and I don't find that to be the case at all. It feels much more segmented, each area noticeably isolated from the others, highlighted by the scripted checkpoint saves and "entering..." messages.

Also, way too much "oh shit, here comes a wave of enemies teleporting in" moments, and not particularly interesting or effective usage of them because they're all spawned closely together in predictable arena-like scenarios. The map from NRFTL only had one instance of enemies teleporting in, the enemies teleported in from multiple spread out spots in parts of the map that you've already cleared, and they'd be running around in corridors and across rooms in attempt to create a confused and unpredictable situation (though it was too easy to simply make a stand in the starting area and take out the clusters of teleported enemies one by one).

Both map progression and enemy encounters seem very mundane and uninspired.

Honestly, it feels like this map could have been made in Doom 4.

This is a hot-take but considering Counter-Strike nearly overtook Quake pretty much the minute it came out, I feel like Arena Shooters were kind of a lucky mistake that happened not because of market forces or because "game companies just aren't interested in the classics anymore" but because of the circumstances at the time.

Quake multiplayer was tacked on, in all reality, but it had enough depth for people to play it, combined with the fact that Quakeworld/Quakespy coming out pretty much defined how people played multiplayer shooters for the next decade is what helped propel the arena genre.

Basically, I'm saying that Quake was played because Quake was what you had to play if you wanted to play online multiplayer shooters.

Now you have a lot of choices.

The fact that a lot of the people left in the arena scene are older guys who dominate without a lot of other people to scale your skill with like in modern games with matchmaking probably doesn't help either.

Quake took off because it was the first game to do true internet multiplayer PROPERLY - everything previous was doing things like dialing your opponent's modem and hoping nobody on either your or their end wants to make a phone call during your game. The gameplay design was pretty tacked on, but the technology was very carefully thought out indeed.

Actually, they spent a lot of time working on the multiplayer because some of them had had so much fun playing DM in doom. Doom's multiplayer came about as a happy accident from carmacks experimentation, but by the time of quake they understood the potential.

ROTS_Version1 was what I was playing, I made sure I got the latest release. I'm pretty disappointed that he says this will be his last map for Doom II, he was going for a more modern style of level design but the result isn't as remarkable as his work in NRFTL. If anything this is easier than hard mode because the increased attack speed is more likely to cause infighting. Only the occasional trap Shambler seems to be an issue and those can be beaten through tricking them into melee attacks. This one i call "Industron" since it is something mixed from the Industrial style with its many iron/steel details and structures fused with Tron: Legacy's light stripes over it to give the extra feeling of futurism, Tron Legacy is favourite reference for futurism, despite being set inside a computer so everything there in the physical world would take too many resources to be kept, specially energy production.

That skybox is literally a "sky-box" i needed it to be placed in the map so i can control its brightness to make the "otherworld" transition effect like the Silent Hill movie does.

Load the PK3 and the WAD, you need them both otherwise you will get this fuckton of issues.

Every project i do, if they have a PK3 with them, then always load them as well, because models are stored there so to not run into issues like invisible monsters or the clusterfuck of <!> it's better load all.

Guys, help me. I used to enjoy Doom greatly, but the more I touch it these days the more I grow to despise it. Every level I end up playing has a bunch of puzzles or secrets, resulting in me going absolutely crazy hunting for something in a wild goose chase. Then, because even Ultimate Doom couldn't be fully completed, I start to assume it is broken and start Noclipping around. Then I find out the answer, realize it isn't broken, and despise myself for having not found the answer on my own or despise myself if I spent a long time looking and it turns out it was broken after all. my advice to you is: stop thinking of maps as puzzles to be solved and treat them as pure action.

feel free to use underhanded methods to learn a map, find all the secrets, and plan an optimal route. use noclip. turn on the map cheat. examine the map in an editor. watch a max demo, or a video of one.

afterwards, there is just as much entertainment in playing a map you already know, and destroying it completely.

look for wads of smaller maps which are meant to be played this way, instead of larger ones which naturally emphasise exploration, since it's not your thing.

I just started playing Doom again recently and decided to go back to Doom RPG w/ Roguelike Arsenal. Just as fun as I remember! So I wanted to do a marathon with Wadsmoosh but any time I get only 4-5 maps in, I get 6-7 script terminated due to runaway errors and everything stops working, can't go to the outpost and do stuff, can't save/load character, can't access RPG menu.

What's the best version of everything to run?
I'm using the latest version of RLA and the Version from DRPG that you're supposed to get that "works with the current version of RLA"

The problem is those underhanded methods make me feel terrible. I feel like I am not playing the game right at that point. I feel like I cheated myself out of an experience, an experience I can never get back. It's like permanently ruining a level for me due to the alternative being making myself miserable and loathing the level I am playing. No matter what I can't be happy.

Is there as much fun if I already know the map? I am not sure. At that point it feels like the damage has been done and that it is permanently damaged for all time. It is essentially making it another level I can never be happy with, never want to play again, and will only have miserable memories of.

I love exploration, that is the sad part. I just hate it when it devolves into spamming every wall. There has been times where I have spent a quarter of a day just trying to find a hidden area without success and the entire experience makes me miserable. Yet looking it up also makes me miserable. I guess I would rather it be focused on straightforward action with exploration that makes me interested in continuing. Spamming every wall just doesn't feel like fun exploration to me and yet I have gotten so flustered I cannot see the most obvious wall hints.

So on March 1st I made a call out for folks interested in Highway to Hell to submit their maps to me.
In that time, I've had only three submissions--two new maps, and one fix of a previous map. I asked the dozen-plus folks who were working on their maps, and either they'd gotten distracted by other stuff, they weren't confident with where their map was, or they wanted a little more time to work on things.

I'm fine with that. This isn't a project that I demand everyone drop everything to work on right away, after all. That would be dumb.
So I'm fine with extending things a little bit to March 31st. If you still need a bit of time to work on things, there you go.
But after then, if you still haven't submitted updates or tweaks to your map, that map will be declared open game for other folks to edit/adjust/fix as they please.

Eh, I dunno.. doesn't look that great. I tried my own thoughts based on the other Metroid pickups, are any of these useful to you? your original claw design is second from the right, was wondering if it could be a large pickup instead and the orb by itself be the small pickup.
(Also you should follow NES palette rules, I see 4 colors on one frame and 5 on another, when it's usually 3 colors and transparency. Mega Man cheats this by having his face reference a separate palette, not sure if it's a separate sprite or what)

1. You don't just flip an exit switch to end the level. You trigger a self destruct sequence and have to reach the exit in time after that.

2. Your melee attack serves to literally punch cracked walls for secrets or shortcuts.

3. The SSG is a Golden Shotgun now that has its own ammo pool. These are not commonly found and instead have to be gained by rescuing prisoners who will always leave some after teleporting out.

i know I'm gonna get quite some flak for saying this but while doom's action is fast paced I find a lot of the actions in the level/game design itself are very counterintuitive to its style of play. things like gun switching and slow sliding doors and lifts taking forever to go up/down are a few of my pet peeves with it. i just swear to god the game comes to a screeching halt when I step on an elevator in doom 1 and 2 save for a few hand counted occasions in mapsets/megawads where I totally knew there were monsters at the top and I had the wrong weapon equipped to deal with them. outside of that it just qualifies as awkward and disjointed.

Trying to make a missile gun mode, I need to recolor the missile to a more NEStroid orange, and I'm going to simulate more recoil using offsets, but I think the animations here are decent

Using Doombuilder and I feel like an idiot. So I setup a door to work correctly as I see online and I have done in other sections of the map but ingame all it does is slightly move down. Wtf am I doing wrong?
