This is one of my favorite short-lived trends from fifth gen. Post animated cutscenes.

I think maybe they were good at the time but probably not necessary anymore.

I do wonder why a lot of modern games have them. Take Persona 5 for example. The IN game cutscenes and models actually look BETTER than the anime ones

Not really retro, but I just finished playing through Wild Arms 3 the other day. The game fakes you out like 10 times thinking you've finally beaten it but nope, there's more!

ikr

couldn't you just do all the cutscene scenes in the game engine since the standard the graphics are held to is pretty much the same now

"necessary" / "better" / "pretty much the same" sound kind of vague. Flat-shaded anime style 3D has a kind of look, and basically 2D animation has another (both can be fucking wooden and lifeless, but in definitely different ways).

It kind of used to be about the technical limitations; not that much so anymore, but about the overall visual style they want to attach to the game. Though I agree the unwritten rule should really be trying to unify the art direction without constant style jumps.

Still, hand-drawn animation has an stablished value of perceived value and basically no lifespan-before-the-game-looks-dated factor. It still works as a artificial quality boost.

Can't think of that many games with actual anime *cutscenes*, 'cept for pic related and the Chrono Trigger remake

Wild Arms 2 was my shit. I had 99 hours in that game and I was only JUST getting into disc 2.

I fucking sucked at RPGs back then.

You could easily make a game that completely consists of hand drawn graphics. You could make hand drawn graphics become the game graphics instead, it doesn't have to proceed in one direction only.

This is still my favorite JRPG to this day
