God, the first time I saw Star Fox and heard the music, I was completely blown away

I remember actually uusing a tape recorder to record the Game start menu music. And if I'm not mistaken, unlocking some sort of South d test to get all the levels music. I just loved that trippy/floaty sound that a lot of the levels had.

But I remember my older cousin saying "Soon, all video games are going to look this good".

Hard to believe, but Unreal AND Unreal Tournament were both pre 2000. Blew away anything else in that time period. Other than that, Wolfenstein and Doom both were top notch for their time. Loaded looked pretty good for a PS1 game, although the dark lighting really helped that.

Should mention that Guardian was an AGA game, which required either a later system or the CD32. Still, the OCS/ECS Amigas had Zeewolf 1 and 2, which played like a more advanced version of Zarch/Virus.

The only graphical update was porting its own Glide features into Direct3D and OpenGL (that cought up to Glide in effect department), and slapping a UT-style interface on top.

Despite being one of the earlier Spectrum games, Dark Star is its only 3D game to run at double digit framerates.

That's probably because there's not much going on, but still.

Dark Star is the only 3D game on the ZX Spectrum to run at double digit framerates. Probably because there's not much going on, but still. The Star Wars port struggles to run at above 3fps, for comparison.

Fat Worm Blows a Sparky is another impressive 3D (2.5D?) ZX Spectrum game. It even has a simple physics engine. The game bombed, probably because of the title, but it also could have just been ahead of its time. It plays like an indie dev was sent back 25 years into the past and told to recreate their student Unity 3D project on a Spectrum.

(I've been considering grabbing a CD32 for a while now, the more cool games I can discover the better)

Are you in England? Because CD32s are available all day every day there for $100 while they're very hard to come by here in the US. It seemed like someone in Florida discovered a crate full of them in spring of 2013 but I was so busy with my new baby I missed out on grabbing one so my search continues.

Toy Story for the SNES/Genesis. Visually it's on par with DKC, but it has other tricks like levels with 5 background layers and a 3D level.

Yeah I'm English. I can pick one up for arround $50 depending on postage and included accessories- I've even stumbled across a few in the wild in the odd charity shop and in one retro gaming store.

I like the fact the system has no copy protection and it's a great way to experience Subwar 2050, Alien Breed trillogy, Beheath a Steel Sky, Flashback, Frontier Elite 2, Gloom and other games.
Plus a standardised controller for Amiga game is just cool.

But The lacking specs have always put me off, the CPU and GPU runs off the same ram and as such many 3D games have abismal frame rates.
I'm well aware of the upgrade kits you can buy which increase the Ram capacity, add a hard drive, floppy drive, keyboard and basucally turn the system into an Amiga 1200 and an double the frane rate of titles such as Gloom but those expansion kits cost way over $250 :/
