Are there any other computer games that made use of the keyboard lights for status or gimmicks like Cotton x68000? I don't remember ever seeing this on a PC

It's impossible since most operating systems don't let you have that much low level access to the hardware to control things such as keyboard lights, that being said it is a cool gimmick

Yeah.

I was messing around with trying to play sounds through the mobo speaker, but windows 7, 8, and 10 won't let you make hardware calls to it. Instead it just plays the alert tone though my headphones.

You can turn all the PC light functions on or off through software, in dos at least.

I had a driver to use PC Speaker for audio in Win 3.1 pic related. Windows doesn't allow direct hardware access anymore, but it used to.

An old Commodore 64 emulator I used to use utilized it as a drive LED. Think it was CCS64 or Vice

Yeah, I was trying to do that on modern windows.
My point was modern windows doesn't let you do that anymore.

That's really cool but the ompatibility issues will be too many for most developers to care

Why did windows stoppped direct hardware access?

MAME can do it to, as I recall.

Is this why DosBox can't use the actual PC speaker?

I don't like the way DosBox emulates the PC speaker, it sounds nothing like the real thing.

Security reasons probably, that or some obscure mobo freaked out and crashed the whole system.

Early OSs had very little concept of security since it was assumed that anyone using the system was knowledgeable about it and responsible.

In modern OSs, you could probably say that security is the #1 priority due to the massive increase in software distribution (meaning malicious software can spread easily) and the massive drop in user competence.
