i don't know if i think he's consciously doing that. i think james' videos take more time to make, and mike realizes that the youtube algorithm favors consistent uploads. a constant presence keeps them relevant, not to mention the easy ad revenue. the videos on cinemassacre proper get 100k views a piece. some of those have up to 4 ads in them because they're over 30 minutes long.

the stream recordings on cinemassacre plays only have 2 ads, i believe, regardless of length but they get tips while they're playing those. and often times it's games they would have spent their time playing anyway.

I've been following the AVGN for a very long time. Before he was on Youtube and his videos were still hosted on Screwattack. I actually lurked the Screwattack Forums back then and, yes, Mike Matei has always been a douchebag.
At first he went by the username "Link" and he would always react really obnoxious and aggressive to any kind of criticism. Around that time, the AVGN episodes began to have more and more skits in them, featuring an unfunny and annoying manchild wearing cheap Halloween costumes. A lot of the fans didn't like this new trend and complained about it. "Link" couldn't take it anymore and revealed that he was in fact Mike Matei, the guy who appeared in those videos.
He always reacted very immature to criticism. Its due to the ease at which their "work" can be replicated and distributed thanks to recording technology. They can perform one time and then have that performance duplicated on demand at any time for no production cost, FOREVER. Its like literally creating an immortal money tree. Some peoples children are STILL collecting royalties on something their parent did ONE TIME in the past. No other "product" is like that. I think its therefore funny and little bit ironic when they get absolutely ass hurt over this "method of production" being turned against them in the form of piracy. Even though they win out by FAR in this double edged sword scenario, they still cry and act like they're being put in the poor house by piracy rather than just accepting that there's a downside to what they're doing.

That said though, I do think they serve a useful purpose. They take our minds off of our daily struggles and help alleviate boredom...there's definitely value in that. However I don't think its millions and millions of dollars worth of value.
