You know what? I was insane enough to look at every fucking game on the Famicom that predates Super Mario Bros. You wanna know a secret? They're shit. They're all shit. Oh, sure, you get some okay arcade ports of stuff like Donkey Kong, but all the games on the system are either one-screen games like that, fucking Majong, or crappy Galaga clones. And that's not even looking at the real bizarre shit.

No. Super Mario Bros. is so much better than every Famicom game that came before it that it might as well have come from a later console generation. Technically, considering most of the other actual good games you ever played on the NES were Famicom Disc System ports using special chips to allow them to run and have battery saves on cartridge, Super Mario Bros. kinda is the start of a new console generation. Or at least a half step up.

It has horizontal scrolling with huge, non-repeating levels. Not one screen, nor simple tracks like Excitebike, nothing like this had ever been done before.

The game does have secrets. All over the place! Many of them are small like all the hidden one-up mushroom blocks, or the warp pipes (secrets the OP complains about at the same time as he says there are none), or the beanstalks, or the hidden coin rooms. But there are vastly more than other games of the time. And 32 stages, none the same, all large and mostlydistinct? That's beyond anything ever done before.

The jumping isn't as good as it would become, but it handles vastly better then all but the best of what comes after. It has a world with a coherent design and sense of world, where all games before are just weird screens. It plays fast and has fun-but-challenging-enough level design.

It's the greatest game ever made... up to 1985.

I never said it saved gamers or any of that shit. The NES may have helped jumpstart the American video game industry (by may, I mean it damn well did) but Mario alone wasn't enough. It paved the way for future games, though.

The thing is, yes, the games you mention are literally the very best games to come out on the system before Super Mario. But I'll argue that they became irrelevant the moment Super Mario Bros. came out.

Mario Bros. is okay for an hour or two, as is Popeye. Excitebike is better, as is Ice Climber. Hell, Ice Climber is almost there, though the jump detection isn't nearly as good as Super Mario's.

But they're like an earlier generation. It's the same sort of jump as from the NES to the Super NES. Because, again, the Famicom Disk System games that came later, like Zelda, Castlevania, Metroid, Doki Doki Panic, Double Dribble, etc, all pushed the limits beyond what the Famicom was capable of. And that's not even getting into the various MMC chips that pushed the original Famicom/NES beyond even what the Disk System could do, thanks to the rapidly lowered cost of memory.

Half of what makes a game like Super Mario Bros. 3 function isn't on the Famicom/NES at all, but is all on the MMC3 chip it uses instead. And while all these games are leaps and bounds better in graphics, length, and in most cases depth, the original Super Mario Bros. comes across like one of those, not like one of the games that came before.

It's the divide between the first half and the second half of the Famicom generation, and as flowery as you call it, it was revolutionary and there's a reason so many games copied it as a side scroller afterwards.
