3825956 No.3825956 [Reply] [Original]

Non-American here, how did this game manage to sell that much? Aside for SM64 (which was a pack-in so it doesn't really count), this is THE best-selling game of 5th gen in North America, way ahead of any PS title (let alone 64).
What did it? Was it the relatively early release, when PS didn't yet take the whole market? Was the hype big for it? Was it remembered in a year-two after its release? Because frankly, I've never seen this game mentioned anywhere before Internet.

spread by word of mouth, plus the n64 really didn't have many great games at the time.

4-player goldeneye was THE party game for much of the late 90s and early 2000s. The only other games we played were Mario Kart and Smash Bros.

Because we played multiplayer with our friends. You remember those right?

Where I lived it was all Counter-Strike, I have no idea how popular it was in the West. I guess it was huge, I was surprised when I saw the game recently shown on Conan for an ebin '90s kids throwback.

Goldeneye actually outsold Halo Combat Evolved, which is something a lot of people don't seem to be aware about.

The reason it did so well is twofold. Firstly, people were sick of Doom clones by then and the game had an accessible and high quality single player that wasn't a Doom clone. Secondly, it made FPS multiplayer accessible, you didn't need a complicated computer setup with multiple computers, just plug in four controllers and you're ready to go.

>>3825982
>Where I lived it was all Counter-Strike
Goldeneye was released 18 months before even the first public beta of Counter Strike.

It wasn't counter strike at goldeneye time 1) cos it didn't exist 2) your eastern euro technology means you played cs years after it was first conceived, thus 3) your time line is also invalid 4) don't speak on issues that occured in more civilised and up to date places

What about Quake? Guess it wasn't on consoles, but then again Doom didn't do extremely well on consoles either.

> Goldeneye was released 18 months before
Yeah, I'm aware of that. The other anon just said that "4-player goldeneye was THE party game for much of the late 90s and early 2000s."

>Guess it wasn't on consoles
It received a release on Sega Saturn and Nintendo 64.

>Doom didn't do extremely well on consoles
The PS1 version had quite reasonable sales.

Console owners were starved for a good multiplayer FPS, so this fairly mediocre, comically delayed game came along and people ate it the fuck up

Probably more responsible than any other game for starting the console FPS trend that emphasized multiplayer, which is ironic given how its multiplayer was a last minute idea

That's actually a great way to explain this, then. Say you weren't a PC gamer, for whatever reason. You wanted something like Counter-Strike, but all you had was an N64.

That's why GoldenEye was such a big deal. Imagine something like a fun Counter-Strike LAN party with your friends, but it's all on one TV, and you only needed one machine and copy of the game.

You might say it's an inferior experience, but for a lot of people this was easy and accessible, so it was a go-to multiplayer game for parties.

Even though the port of Quake 2 on PSX was very good, it literally was the PC version just watered down.

Goldeneye's multi was a bit more unique due to gadgets like remote mines.

Back in a time before terrorism and dreadful nights slaving at the computer for a marketing division you have zero personal contact with, you went to your friends house down the street and played this game for six hours. If you owned this game, six or seven people would come to your house on average three or four times a week, and you were probably the first kid in your clique that had a girlfriend.

One of the best attributes of GoldenEye 007 was its ability to conjure pizza almost everywhere it went. It was almost as if a beacon that signaled directly to the local Dominoes went off whenever this game was in. I don't have any other theory to explain how many memories I have that connect pizza to this game.

Tip of le reddit cap to you too, m'lady. Le Bond is indeed trendy to mock, but put your mind to these facts fortwhit sir:
It received multiple sequels and is still sprecaned about even this fortnight.
It has more complex FPS gameplay than modern shooters like the ruffians COD and Halo. Features like escort missions, civilians, stealth, co-op, and numerous maps and weapons to customize for fun.
That you are indeed the gayest of faggots.

I loved the objective based single player, for me me it was really different from the "go from point A to point B" FPS games of the time, in fact, after replaying it recently I still think it is way better than Half-Life. The multiplayer was awsome as well, used to play all the time with my brother.

Semantically speaking, Quake is credited with being the first FPS. Things like Hexen, Strife, Ken's Labyrinth were "Doom clones."

>>3825956
It was budget multiplayer-focused in an era when PC gaming was a huge fucking investment and the concept of required 3D graphics cards pushing their prices up into the thousands of dollars.

It was far easier to convince mom and pop to shell out $250 for an N64 and some games for Christmas than $2000 for a bleeding edge Pentium 2 and an internet connection to play TCP/IP 16-player Quake that would invariably get dropped when grandma tried to call Midge to talk about their soaps.
