KDL is too short to be worth a buy, literally only four stages (and then again for hard mode). You're better off borrowing it or emulating it or something.

KDL2 is a much fuller experience and worth getting.

I'd strongly recommend the Mario's Picross games, they're really fun if you end up liking Picross. Here's some other favorites:

>Final Fantasy Legend 1 and 2 (SaGa 1 and 2)
>Final Fantasy Adventure (Seiken Densetsu)
>Faceball 2000
>X
>Castlevania Belmont's Revenge
>Quarth
>TMNT 3: Radical Rescue

When you eat the monster meat or whatever in FFL games, how do you change back to normal? Is it absolutely necessary to do that? Do you learn their skills for good or what. I'm a little confused as to what you're supposed to do with that shit. Can you just play through the game without doing any of that shit?

when a monster eats meat in FFL it has a chance to transform.

>The transformation is not randomized.

>The transformation is based what your mobster currently is and what type of meat it is eating.

>A monster's stats and abilities are static, and based on what type of monsters it is

>Monsters have specific families that share sprites, with a weakest to strongest hierarchy ex. Skeleton - Lich
>The monster's power level is based on tiers. It's actually possible to get a game breaking monster in the first world, that is OP for a majority of the game.

>Minor spoilers! To get t most powerful monsters you must have your monster eat the meat from one or more of the monsters undead Guardian beasts (turtle, dragon, tiger, or phoenix). Your monster will then be at the top tier permanently and all subsequent meat eating transformations will be into other top tier monsters.

Two underrated games for GB.

Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru/For Frog the Bell Tolls

A kind of prototype of link's awakening, that game uses this game's engine. More puzzle based then really focused on the "action" it's an extremely charming adventure game with lots of silly npcs. Requires a fan translation to play.

Trip World: A nice platformer by sunsoft. It seems to take some inspiration from gimmick. While not as brilliant as gimmick it's a pretty nice platformer with amazing music and art for the original gameboy.

Not underrated but the gameboy mega man games are great. The first three are kinda dull but IV and especially V are great.

Yellow is the "third version" with the least amount of updates.

Obviously, you start with Pikachu, and you can get all the other starters, and it has extra boss battles with Jessie and James, but those are the biggest changes.

The sprites are all re-drawn to look closer to the anime, personally I always thought the Red/Blue sprites had more personality to them.

Gym Leader teams have been tweaked, again, to better mimic the anime, mostly made worse in my opinion.

And lastly, the movesets of some pokemon have been tweaked, like Nidoran not needing to take fucking forever to learn double kick.

There's also a surfing pikachu minigame, but that can only be accessed if you won the prize pikachu from pokemon stadium, or if you're playing the virtual console version of the game.

You're not missing anything much by getting red or blue instead to be honest.

>I still don't get how so many people say it's the superior of the two.
Me neither, but to their defense, SML1 looks ridiculous today. Literally like Nokia 3310 game, with the only exception being smooth framerate. This is one of the cases where I legitimately had to adjust to graphics for some time, with those tiny blocks and stuff. I think any NES game, even the launch titles, look more fresh than this. And yeah the shmup stages are awful too.
When you remember that
1) SML2 had incomparably better graphics, huge sprites and pretty map—all in 1992
2) SML2 follows the Mario guidelines more closely: turtles don't blow up, power flower shoots forward, etc.
Then it becomes more obvious why people choose it.

Still, I must say, having grown up with the low-key masterpiece that was SML3 and then GBA with Metroid Fusion, Castlevania CotM, etc, I kinda got used to portables actually having good games. SML2 made me realize why they weren't taken seriously for so long. Because if Nintendo, of all companies, published this shit, then it's no wonder others followed their example.

My most vibrant memory was how the power flower didn't even stay on the ground, I thought "they couldn't even get THAT right".
I literally learned it was a legit Super Mario game from the picrelated comic. The realization came slow to me. I used to play both SML3 and 1, the difference was just striking.

It just looks like a black and white NES game to me, which is about what you can expect for a gameboy game.

Aside from the bomb turtles and the power ball, it doesn't seem that different from a regular Mario to me. These blocks are 8 pixels wide. Eight. It's bordering on Atari level, when you wonder "what the hell is this supposed to be". What's more, they just use line art for most stuff, VERY basic graphics, even for NES.
> In fact it feels closer in spirit to the original SMB1 than any of the games that came after it...
I agree and I also love it for this. That said, it does have flaws. I find it nigh impossible to aim jumps well while running, I was walking through most of the game. Plus you can't pick up shells, and the whole collision detection is quite a bit wonky.
>Wario Land 2 was pretty good, but the first one was too damned slow and floaty, and it had the same problem as SML2 where the sprites were too big and the screen was too crunched.
It's not too fast I agree, but it worked well. Big screen is needed for fast games. When it's slower, smaller screen is alright. Great graphics despite that, very smooth and well-drawn. Replaying it now with GBC palette.

I don't bitch about it though, it's OK by itself. But vertical scrolling is awful, they learned from this mistake in SML3

Yes, they had to use scrolling, but that's obviously because they had to preserve the original. And SML1–2 were new games.

Every one of these games for GB is fantastic. The Bomberman Max games are GBC only, but the others are either original GB or dual-mode carts. (dual-mode carts work on all GB hardware)

Be aware there's a lot of rebranding between regions, for whatever lame reason. I believe "Atomic Punk" is called Bomber Boy in Japan and Dynablaster in the EU, for example.

Bomberman GB3 is a Japan-only release. It's still playable with no knowledge of moonrunes, as the only text consists of brief instructions for how to clear each stage. (which is obvious thanks to accompanying visual demonstrations)

Most of these are affordable, especially if you import.

>Tetris variants
Tetris 2 (Tetris Flash in Japan) and Tetris Blast (Bombliss in Japan) are way more interesting than classic Tetris. Don't listen to the "They changed it, and now it sucks!" crowd. Tetris 2 may not play anything like Tetris, but that's exactly why it's a great sequel. Who wants to play bland Tetris over and over again?

Both games are dirt cheap.

>Final Fantasy Legend games
Which are shamelessly rebranded SaGa titles; but anyone with even a modicum of Internet trivia knowledge is probably already aware of this. Of all the RPGs present in the classic GB library, these are the only ones I keep coming back to. Most people would tell you to get FFL2 and ignore the others, but those people are idiots. All three games have their strengths and weaknesses.

Not very affordable unless you import.

>Gargoyle's Quest
A short, Zelda II-esque action-adventure game based on Ghosts 'n Goblins. I'd hardly say it's worth the USD$30+ that reseller scum are asking for it, but definitely pick it up if you see it at a yard sale or something. There's also a sequel ported from its original NES version. It's a Japan-only release, though.

>Pokemon Gold works on the DMG. That counts right?

Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold and Silver were all DMG-compatible. Crystal was a GBC exclusive since it had more features that I assume only GBC hardware can pull off.

>>3827064
>Yellow is superior to Red/Blue/Green

Being able to get all the starters is really more of a novelty. It's not like any serious player really bothers to train and use them against the Final Four. Gen I has rather imbalanced typing that makes an all-psychic team objectively better than anything else. Plus there's the three legendaries you can obtain late in the game.

>>3829958

Way overpriced. In most cases, you'd spend less just buying all the individual GB titles that you actually want to play.

That soundtrack you linked sounds pretty much like the NES, as most Japanese Game Boy soundtracks do. I guess this one is a bit better since it actually uses the stereo.

Haven't read the other posts, so I might be repeating some. Sorry in advance.

I spent about $20 to buy a copy of X from a Japanese guy on eBay, and it's outstanding. Worth finding, if not for the gameplay, then at least the novelty of playing essentially Starfox on a Gameboy.

They might not be sexy, but the ports of old games like Centipede or Crystal Quest are great. Real pick-up-and-go.

Monster Max is one of those weird-ass English games with the isometric perspective. It's pretty fun when you get used to the odd-ball view.

When I get home in about 2 hours, if this thread is still up, OP, I'll make a few other suggestions.

cause I don't want to discuss games with collectors, their knowledge of games is shallow at best

Strted playing Kirby's Dreamland 2. It's cool, but the default GBC palette for it is horrendous, IMO. It gets colors right but kills the contrast.
Tried other ones, the one called "Special 2" in Gambatte works better IMO.

It's up to everyone's taste. Personally, though I used to stick with greyscale for "how the devs intended", I find that it makes things harder to see and often lacks contrast.
GBC palettes are great find for me because they can have 3 different palettes for 2 object layers and the BG. It makes it easier to distinguish the characters, the items and the background between each other.
I found this out recently by replaying SML3. I've beaten the game 2 times before, but trying it now with color suddenly felt so much better, giving a fresh feel to the whole game.
Last but not least, GBC bios has special assigned palettes for many games, so they're pretty much "official". These sometimes look awesome, like in DK'94… Sometimes not though.

>Daedalus Opus
Very neat little puzzle game where you're given a bunch of fucked-up shapes and have to fit them all on to a board. Starts simple with just a couple of shapes, but as the level goes on, it adds more shapes to your inventory that you have to use to complete the level. I think there were like 40-something boards.

>Ninja Taro
Interesting poor-man's Link's Awakening released in the handheld's earlier years, before LA refined the genre. Pretty fun game if you enjoyed LA though; Ninja Taro came out about 2 years before it, and feels like a very rough version of what GB Zelda became. A lot more action-based than Link's Awakening, even though the gameplay itself is on a slower pace.

Protip: If you find yourself back in the 1990s, always see what games the poor kids have. They often have weird budget titles and obscure cheap shit that end up being amazing hidden gems. I found out about both these games because I had a redneck trailer-dwelling friend whose single mom couldn't buy him the more expensive first-party titles everybody else had, so she'd get him secondhand shit from flea markets.
