3819729 No.3819729 [Reply] [Original]

Can anyone recommend cRPGs with D&D rules to someone who's never played D&D? I know of Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights.

>> No.3819749

>>3819729
That plus Icewind Dale. Where Baldur's Gate is more story focused, Icewind Dale puts a lot more emphasis on combat.

I've heard good things about Knights of the Chalice, that it's one of the best adaptions of the 3rd edition rules but I've not played it myself.

>> No.3819758

Planescape: Torment of course
Also tons of gold box games

Be aware that these games use first and second edition rulesets so they're not necessarily going to get you ready to play in a modern campaign.

Play all dem Goldbox games.

My intention is basically half and half to learn D&D in general and to not just get lost in the rules playing the game.

Thanks for the recommendations everybody.

>Learn D&D
You should keep in mind that the rules for D&D have changed a lot over the years. All the recommended games use modified version of pretty old rule sets from AD&D, and aren't indicative of the modern game.

Neverwinter Nights uses false edition rules, "false Dungeons & Dragons" as it were, to create the gaming experience. Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter and Icewind Dale 2 also use false edition / false rules as well, unfortunately. Luckily their assets are compatible with BG1/2 for modding purposes.

Baldur's Gate / SSI Gold Box / other SSI games prior to summer 2000 utilize True AD&D™ rules—True iterations of the (Advanced) Dungeons & Dragons ruleset(s).

In True AD&D™, the experience and treasure earned feel real. The magic one wields and faces feels real. Combat feels real. All things become real via the magic of verisimilitude. False editions have no such ability due to employing false rules—they can never approach True AD&D™ in its ability to impart a transfer of power in a Foucaultian sense.

Note that the Baldur's Gate, while a subset of True AD&D™, does not represent all of True AD&D™ (which is in itself a proper execution of all rules from prior to summer 2000.) It does not execute all of the rules, creating a necessarily limited play experience. However, those rules included are True. Tupac is alive in True AD&D™—AD&D has gold because of Tupac. Tupac rap magic.

>> No.3820909

>>3820832
Anything from after summer of 2000 is a false edition and warrants no attention for any reason.

Gold Box games are the best D&D videogames in existence.
Better than BG even.

baldur's gate 1+2 are good places to start. planescape torment is good. icewind dale is really fucking boring unless you're absolutely in love with dungeon crawling.

Why do some people say 3.5 was the beginning of the end?

I thought 3.5 was just an extension of 3E and the game only turned to shit with 4E.

Advanced and 2E are the same game after 1982. Anything Monster Manual II and after is 2E. To indicate this, they dropped "Second Edition" from the game's name in 1995. At this time also, Basic became part of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons with the official folding-in of the Mystara campaign world to the canon of "2E".

Oh dear sweet baby Jesus, please don't learn tabletop gaming through videogames.

As someone that GMs, and plays, a shitload of tabletop rpgs the very first thing I have to do when it comes to new players is having to force players to unlearn everything videogames have taught them.

If you want to learn how to play rpgs find a local game store and just play. If your GM isn't a cunt/new you shouldn't have to do anything other than play the game to get a grasp of what to do in a campaign.

I don't know what games you were playing, but I've never played a videogame where talking and tricking your way through isn't either boring or filled with adventure game logic. Unless there are somehow some videogames out there with artificial GMs with human-like creativity for the bullshit that you could throw at them then I'm sorry but you learned wrong.

More like things such as tactics, dungeneering, building a character and party.
Talking tends to backfire anyway so you best take your shot at killing them before they can kill you.

Neverwinter Nights was 3.0E. Neverwinter Nights 2 was 3.5E.

I've played Knights of the Chalice quite a lot, I really recommend it. It's heavily inspired by the dark sun D&D setting. It doesn't give you as many party customisation options as Icewind Dale but it's a very solid and very comfy game.

Class balance that makes AD&D look like a bastion of sanity, a shitty implementation of 3E's shitty feat system, monsters with truckloads of HP for no reason whatsoever to the point where 3 minmaxed melee will still take more than a single round to take them down(see: worg riders and especially the worg rider captains), boring equipment until you play HoF. It's really terrible compared to IWD1 and almost all of the blame can be pinned on the mechanics.

That only happens in pen and paper. In video games you can't always attack non-hostiles.

The only reason to talk to somebody in a tRPG is to build up your own surprise attack.
